Goodbye January 2016! Leaving - but for a good reason!

Hi mommas!

So I had my first prenatal appointment yesterday and it looks like I'll be switching boards in a big way. I'll be headed to the October 2015 board because apparently I'm *wayyyy* further along than originally thought! I went in thinking I was 9.5 weeks pregnant based on (what I thought was) my LMP. Turns out I was wrong - I'm *21 weeks* today!! More than half-way through! :-o Needless to say I was shocked. My doctor pressed on my stomach to begin the exam, looked at me and said, "oh honey, I think you're further along. Your uterus is right there." She ran to get a doppler, put the wand right on my belly and the heartbeat was loud and clear. She ordered my first ultrasounds to determine the gestational age. It was truly amazing to watch - the baby was moving a LOT! I got a 3D scan as well - I saw limbs, hands, a face, the spine, the umbilical cord. So beautiful. To go from imagining the worst at this appointment (empty sac, no heartbeat) to seeing such a developed baby rolling around in there literally took my breath away. Unfortunately, my husband was not there to share the moment with me - I was told over the phone that the first appointment wasn't going to include an ultrasound, just an exam and bloodwork, and that he should come to the next one. I was disappointed that he missed out, but at least he will be at my anatomy scan a week from today which will be much more thorough.

Anyway, I was shocked at this news but my doctor and ultrasound tech had a good laugh over it. "Hey at least now you're more than half-way through!" my doctor chuckled. Sounds like word gets around the OB office - I called about moving an appointment today and the woman says "are you the one who was a lot further along...?" haha umm yeah..

You're probably wondering "how the hell could you not know you've been pregnant for that long?" Based on my new due date of October 20th, I was pregnant starting at the end of January but didn't know it. We weren't actively TTC but we weren't trying to prevent it, so I was not on birth control. February and March I was having what I thought was a *really* light period with some sporadic bleeding/spotting in between. My breasts were sore for weeks and weeks, but I figured it was the hormones from this wacky period. I was very active at the time, training for and doing Spartan races, high-intensity workouts, trail runs, heavy weightlifting, etc - I had heard that it's not uncommon for women who exercise heavily to get irregular periods. It didn't really occur to me to take a HPT, but I called the OB's office complaining of irregular bleeding. Since I was only having this bleeding for a couple of cycles, they suggested I wait another cycle and go in for my annual exam in early May to see if it continued. That exam never happened - I got my BFP a few days before it, so I called the OB's office to let them know of my new situation, and they moved the appointment out 5+ weeks to become my first prenatal appointment. Yes, I should have brought up the irregular periods so I could've gotten in for a dating scan earlier, but for some reason I was so sure my LMP was right, and to be honest I was still in shock over the BFP to really think everything through. In reality, I was already at 16 weeks at this point!!

Looking back, that was all just some light first trimester bleeding/spotting. If I had actually known that was my first trimester, I would have freaked the f*** out over the blood. Fortunately, that all passed, and the only symptoms I was having were the usual pregnancy symptoms - sore/growing boobs, frequent urination, some mild cramping here and there. Some lower energy levels at some points but no real fatigue, and no sign of nausea and vomiting, even until now. I kept complaining about being so bloated and joked that "by the end of the night, I swear I look like I'm 5 months pregnant!" It turns out, I was pretty close!

Just wanted to say that this was a great group of women and I enjoyed reading and participating in threads here. I may even check back here from time to time :) I learned a lot here. I worried a lot too. It got me through a lot of this pregnancy knowing other ladies had the same fears as I did. I hope some of you could get a laugh out of my little miscalculation. I wish you all the best in your pregnancies.

Thank you, everyone! I will check back on this board and keep you all posted! :) It's pretty bizarre. I'm still trying to get used to the idea of being this far along. I feel like I hit some sort of fast-forward button or was sent through a time machine lol. I went from worrying about everything I could control in my first trimester to realizing I actually controlled NONE of it. Yet here I am and this little Spartan is still kickin' around. Soo crazy!

@runnermeg haha yes, I ran a half-marathon at almost 20 weeks! I thought I was only 8.5 :-x The day before my appointment I hiked up and down a ski mountain with my husband and a friend for some conditioning. When she found out the news yesterday she was so surprised. She had no idea I was pregnant, let alone 5 months pregnant!
  • Wow! Amazing! How awesome to wake up and poof, 5 months. Ha! Enjoy the October board.

Hi everyone! Just wanted to follow-up on my results :) Apparently since I was already so far along at my first appointment last week, they had just gone ahead and performed the anatomy scan with my first ultrasound. Everything is normal, all blood work and tests were normal, ultrasound results were normal, no abnormalities, and baby measured at 382g/13 oz which was perfectly normal for an age of 20 weeks, 6 days. You better believe I'm thanking my lucky stars today!!

22 weeks tomorrow! I hope all is well with you ladies :)
  • That is crazy!  Had you gone any longer, you might have ended up on a certain TLC show! :-)

    Congrats!
