so.. can someone tell me what ETA stands for?

im not sure if what ive been using it for is different than what it could actually mean.

It means "edited to add" - you put it to explain what you added to your message. Sometimes it's annoying to see a message has been edited but not know what was changed.
ok good. wasnt sure if that was it. i honestly just guessed on the meaning and have just been using it without knowing for sure.

  • Lots of discussing of crying here. Wanted to suggest the happiest baby on the block. Simple book, rather repetitive but a godsend with our colicky baby. It wasn't a solution for him but it helped a lot. We sssushed and rocked and nursed like crazy people for 2 months trying to keep our monster at bay. I read the silly book about 20 times for support. Referenced it today when our new guy seemed inconsolable. I had forgotten about trying a side or stomach lie position and he relaxed as soon as I draped him along my forearm.

@devyns2nd Not necessarily. That is so unpredictable. No one could really tell you that. Our bodies are crazy and you never know!

As for the nails ...... It doesn't matter.
I've never taken the time to take off someone's nail polish. It's more of an issue in the elderly who are predisposed to oxygen problems or high risk etc.....

Well that didn't make me feel much better ;) you're on the bump you should have all answers.

@Westypet you and I are soul mates on the bringing shit to the hospital. I've considered bringing my 6 pillows I need to sleep because of doing a night induction......... And it's not logical because they "could" get ruined ...... Lol but I also want to bring my 2 cute tee shirt gowns to wear in labor and that's not logical either.
I'm just not logical at this point!!!!
My bag is pretty full. I just need to add the LED candles and incense and were good to go..............

I had an overnight induction and wished I had brought more than 1 pillow. All in all, I had 5, but I still wanted more lol. Especially after birth, since sleep was so scarce.

What kind of tops should I bring with me to the hospital? I plan on bf'ing and I have nursing tanks and bras, but with random visitors, I feel like I want to be covered more, but I don't have button down shirts/don't really want to buy clothes only to wear at the hospital.

I lived in a sports bra covered by a robe for the first week and a half of her life. The nurses got really used to me walking around half naked. When visitors came I kept the robe bound up tight. I thought I would care more, but I definitely didn't.
  • Thanks for the nail advice ladies, I usually do french, but maybe I'll do clear or something. I'd really like a color on my toes, though.

I know it's no longer Friday but I don't remember reading this anywhere is nausea a normal labor thing or should be concerned contractions still far enough apart to be laboring at home just curious if the nausea changes that?
  • I remember in a previous thread a WHILE ago the STM+ were telling us that during they labor some of them were vomiting. But I don't know if that would change the regular guidelines of when to go into the hospital / call them. I would think it may be worth a call at least, because vomiting will 1) dehydrate you and 2) weaken you. And I would think either of those would not be an ideal situation to start out with

Definitely call. I threw up for 6 hours straight with DS1 and needed IV dehydration. I was in the hospital because my water had broken, started vomiting at 1cm dilated and continued until I was ready to push. That labor was very intense from the beginning because of back labor yet the early contractions were only prepping my unready cervix not dilating. I imagine they will admit you for that even without much dilation. Even if you don't meet the timing guidelines you may be safer or feel more comfortable at hospital. I certainly did, things were way to intense for me to feel okay at home.

  • I have actually been drinking a lot eating in small amounts and after all evening actually had my stomach stettle a couple hours ago.

I've never had a major surgery before, but I've heard if you do that you can't have your nails painted because they look at your nails and if they turn blue you could be choking or having lack of oxygen. I'd like to squeeze in one last mani/pedi before LO gets here but don't want to spend the money if I'm going to have to take the polish off if I do wind up with a c section. Anyone know if this is true?

Not true at all for my hospital. I have had two previous sections and will have another with this baby. I would say they'd come closer to looking at your lips for low oxygen.
  • @mjschenk I think nausea can come back in the last month. But it is true you can vomit during labor. It was the only time I threw up during my whole pregnancy. Your body is trying to clear everything out. You may also have diarrhea too.

I threw up while in active/hard core labor. They said they knew I was progressing and have useful contractions once that started. I'd still follow the 511 rule on when to go in, but you can always call the doc just in case.
  • I feel really dumb BUT do you get induced--- if you are going in for a scheduled C section or do you just go in and thy cut you open?
  • meaning they put you on pitocin  lol
  • No they don't because that starts labor and they don't want you in labor when they do a c section, you'll either get an epiderl or spinal
  • I know it's not Friday but I just thought of this....for those of you that are taking EPO and use it vaginally, do you know if you can still use it if your mucus plug falls? I haven't read anything about it....stupid question I know, but thankfully we have this thread right? Lol

    Good question!!!??
  • So, this is a more emotional question than a physical issue. I've started having contractions, am a FTM (as I'm sure most of you know by now ;p), and I'm seriously scared about all of this progressing from here. I've been fine so far, nervous but not emotional, and as of today I feel entirely helpless and petrified. DH wants me to wake him up when I have a contraction, but it's not like I can talk during them and he takes sleeping pills anyway so it's not easy to wake him up.
I think I can handle waking him up if they get close and I need him, but how do I tell him that I really, more than I need him to stare at me while I'm having a contraction, to tell me that I can do this. I suck at feelings, y'all. I don't have any idea how to bring this up without offending him or making him feel like he's not doing enough, because he's really been amazing.
  • @Frogger5 I have been having them for a few days now but doc says there's no need to go in unless they're consistent and close, which they haven't been yet. I will get a few close enough to get me nervous, freak out a little, and then they will stop.

This kid is a labor tease.

I hear you. I've had a few in a row but not exactly the same amount of minutes apart, but not really painful yet. Then I think, "damn, something is happening!!" . . . and then nothing. I suppose if they stop there's certainly no reason to go in/call, but then how frustrating to have them be so painful already! Sorry for you!
  • Sometimes it's helpful to tell them EXACTLY what you need from them, almost like the way you would communicate your birth plan to your doc or nurse, I suppose.

I need you to cheer me on, DH. Instead of asking me how it feels, or how I'm doing, say this: insert whatever comforting phrases you need.

Or do a: "this is helpful/this is not helpful" chart. It sounds silly, but it's helped me today/tonight with hubby when hormones have turned me into an insanely volatile crybaby.
  • @bethanne09 i would probably honestly just say something potentially harsh out of pain/discomfort like "staring at me isnt exactly helpful or encouraging"

you could text him when he is away so you dont have to worry about it being awkward, thats what i would do at least. or maybe just tell him straight up, try not to make it emotional. or tell him before even starting that telling him is uncomfortable/hard for you. im sure he'll be understanding.
  • Y'all are great.
    That is all. :)
  • Ive bought a canesten combi cream and pessary, but now im starting to wonder if I should actually use it or not so late on, im 38+2 and in agony with this thrush. GP Isnt open today or tomorrow to ask :( just incase I happen to have dialated or anything would it cause harm?
  • What exactly are contractions? What causes them?
  • Question: If you find that your contractions are meeting the 5:1:1 rule, but are still mild, would you still head to hospital or wait until they are more intense?
  • @3llisboc, are you talking about a yeast infection?  I thought thrush was for the mouth.  Here's what I'd say if you were referring to a yeast infection... I asked my doctor about this earlier in the week (while 38 weeks, I'll be 39 weeks tomorrow), and she said I could go ahead and use the Monistat 7 treatment.  Even after me re-asking twice about how far along I was she said it was fine (just to only insert the applicator half way and only do the 7 day treatment, not the shorter treatments...which are her normal instructions for early in pregnancy too).  As of my last appointment I wasn't dilated at all, but from what I understand, that doesn't mean you won't start dialating the next day or something.  I'm not sure if this is a question you can ask a Pharmacist about?  Or ask a nurse at your hospital by calling?  Since your doctors office isn't open yet.  Worst case, maybe try using the cream externally for hopefully a bit of relief.

@MurLindzz, personally, I'd still go to the hospital (I'd rather not take any chances).  Plus, from what I understand, level of pain isn't really part of that guideline anyway (at least whenever I've heard/read about it).  But if I was really wondering/debating with myself about it, I'd just call L&D or my doctor to ask what they think.

My provider warned me that this might happen, and said no, definitely not worth it to go into the hospital if contractions are still tolerable, regardless of meeting 5-1-1 threshold.

@devyns2nd question got me thinking. I'm being induced this Thursday. Do inductions sometimes not work? I just assumed this wasn't an option...
  • @amccoy129 if your far enough in the induction and your water is broke there is no going home. If your just not dilating and your water is intact they can send you home.
  • aj1327aj1327 member
@klkonwi thanks for the response! I just googled inductions, which I wish I wouldn't have done! Hoping for a smooth one...really hoping I go into labor before Thursday!

@amccoy129 your never garunteed anything in labor: ever.
Even if your water breaks and you go into labor on your own your still not sure of all factors involved. The size of your passenger (baby), if your cervix will dilate, baby's heart rate or the length of time your labor takes.
I just had a friend go into labor on her very own ..... Still had a 36 hr labor and cesarean. Just please don't google. Google can only scare you. What I'm trying to tell you is not to scare you but to make you understand that labor is variable. No garuntees.
We can't get pictures in our head of the perfect scenario because that may or may not happen. :)

Thank you for this! This is the exact conversation I had with DH after discussing risks vs. benefits with our doctor. I had a friend labor for 20 hours and have a c section. It's all a gamble! I hate Google! Lol
