February 2016 Moms

When will your ob see you for the first time?

Have you called your Ob to make an appointment yet? When is your first appointment scheduled?

I was hoping to switch obs but I hear the one I want to go to says 8 weeks but I think my old ob will see you at 6 weeks. Just wondering what the norm is?

Mom of one adorable little boy and excited to do this again.

Honestly, it varies depending on the doctor/midwife. I believe as long as you're not considered high risk or there isn't anything your doctor wants to monitor you for right away, it's typical to be seen around the 8-9 week mark. There isn't really much to see/do/hear before that.

  • My doctor does the first appointment at 8 weeks. I called and scheduled mine and it's actually at 7 weeks and 4 days. It's an ultrasound first then checkup with the OB. That's also how my old OB did it.

  • I'll be 8 weeks 4 days!

  • I will be 6 weeks because I'm high risk. So in 13 days.
  • Mine wouldn't see me until at least 8 weeks so I have an appointment on the 18th (feels like forever away). I have had a previous m/c and last time, they did an internal u/s at 6.5 weeks because they thought I might be further along based on the date of my last period (pcos throws everything off).

Mine does 8-10 and could only get me an appointment at 10, July 6th
Also I don't have an OB per se, I just called my insurance and they set it up.

I made 4 different appts. Each time the scheduler said something different. First time: they tried to get me in ASAP and scheduled me for June 19 and said they try to get you in at 6-8 weeks. I realized I'd only be 5 weeks from ovulation, so I didn't think I would be far enough by then. When I called back, they said, yeah you have to be 6-8 from when you found out! So they rescheduled me 2 weeks later. After I hung up, i did the math and that wasn't 6-8 after I FOUND OUT, but it was since O. I was hoping to call back and get an earlier appt and also a second appt later than the one I had. They didn't have an earlier, so they just rescheduled me for two weeks later. Then I started sweating that I'll be like 10 weeks pg before I see a dr for the first time. I called back and said "This is my first pg, I don't know what I'm doing and everyone says something different. Real talk: when am I supposed to come in?!" She asked for my last period, the first time someone asked, and she thinks I'm already 8 weeks now based on my last period. So she rescheduled me ASAP, ironically the same day as my first appt, but with a different midwife. I know cuz I chart and temp that I'm not 8 weeks along, but if it got me an earlier appt, I'll take it.

ETA: So I'll be 6+6 on my appt. (by my ovulation, not last period)

  • I sees low-risk pt's at 9-10wks; my first appt is July 6th (which ought be 9 wks + a few days)

So a follow-up question on "weeks" - some place seem to count weeks by # completed (so the 4wks + 6 days = 4 wks) and others seem to count the current week (4wks + 6 days as the 5th week).  Is there a standard that is used?  Not that it really matters in the long run...

  • My office usually schedules them around 8 weeks. Mine is in a few weeks and I will be about 8w3d along, at least I think.
  • I will have an ultrasound at 8 weeks (based on LMP) for dating purposes and to make sure it's not ectopic(spelling???) Then they have you come back for your first true prenatal appointment at 10-11 weeks.
  • Mine scheduled me for "about 8 weeks", so I go in June 19th when I'll be 7 weeks, 4 days. They have me down for an ultrasound at 2pm and an appointment with an OB at 2:30pm. 14 more days! Seriously, I can't wait.

Random question - is there a reason that people get their HCG levels checked and some don't? My first appointment isn't until 6.15.15 and I haven't been pregnant in over 5 years so I'm a little rusty at why this is done by some and not by all. :) I'm currently 4 weeks and 6 days.

They checked mine because I had a mmc in March.
  • I think it all depends on your doctor. With the military doctors here, that's your pregnancy test. You need a referral for an OB here, so they aren't going to just take your word for it with a HPT. I only know my levels because I asked what they are.

LittleLotero usually its just if you are high risk for MC that you will get betas done or if you have had MC's in the past or have been having trouble trying to concieve.
  • I'll be exactly 8 weeks, they wouldn't see me sooner than that.

    I'm sorry to hear that.

  • My first u/s will be at 7 weeks on June 16. This seems a bit earlier than the norm. Its crazy how different every office is!

  • I'll see the NP at 5w4d. Then I'm sure they'll have me back at 8 wks and so on. I'm 37 so the bloodwork and such can be helpful if it turns out I need to be on progesterone or something.

  • @LittleLotero thank you. I'm so incredibly nervous because of the way my mc happened so I'm really trying not to get to excited yet but at the same time my numbers look awesome. My progesterone was a little on the low side so I'm now talking a supplement. Hopefully that will do the trick. I want to be happy but I want to cry at the same time.
  • I will be seen next week right as I hit 6 weeks. It's the earliest I've ever been seen compared to my past two. I think it was just because they happened to have an opening and they don't do much at the first appointment except double check due dates and get a medical history going. Should be easy since I will have the same doctor as my last pregnancy and that was just a little over a year ago.

  • Last time my ob wouldn't see me til 12 weeks :-( I'm expecting it to be the same this time so I haven't even bothered calling.
  • My ob won't see me until I'm 10-12 weeks which I think is a little late :/ So my first appt isn't until July 14, I'll be 10 weeks 5 days! And I don't even know when they'll schedule the ultrasound, sometime after that!

  • Mine will be 8w2d on June 23rd. Three full weeks away, but I'm grateful they got me in so early.
  • My first appt is june 22nd and I'll be exactly 8 weeks (9 weeks from my last period but I know when I ovulated so I think I'll be 8 weeks.)
It's torture! I took 7 pregnancy tests that all had super strong lines from the beginning, but I'm still worried that I'm getting my hopes up and it's not real. I'm not high risk or have any reason to think anything is wrong but I hate waiting!

I have an appointment in two weeks. I'm considered high risk since I was high risk with my last baby that ended with a miscarriage. I am seeing the same OB and I'm sure it's going to be interesting.
    First appointment: June 16

My ob saw me at 6 weeks with DS 1 but my new ob doesn't seen patients until 8-9 unless there are concerns.
  • Is it normal for your Dr to not see you until 12 weeks or so? I had my first appointment less than a week after finding out I was pregnant, for a pap etc. I have bloodwork and an ultrasound being scheduled for the next month and then my next Dr appointment is at Week 10. Is my Dr maybe just being cautious because it's our first?

In my experience, they typically try to get you in between 8-10 weeks.

  • My appt is June 17 and I'll be 7.5 weeks. So anxious. Despite 4 positives (2 on digital) I just want some sort of confirmation. I did take my last digital from the box last weekend and it has moved up to 2-3 weeks so I take that as my levels are rising as they should?
