Paint colors

Anybody else obsess over picking the perfect color/shade? I'm horrible at choosing paint colors. We are doing the nursery pink and grey and oh my word there are a million shades of grey!

Re: Paint colors

  • I would be but since the house is for sale we just left it the same neutral color that the whole house is. But normally I do obsess over finding the exact right shade! It's killing me.

  • Grey is THE hardest color to pick. True grey is hard to find without blue in it. If you pinterest, search for grey paint colors and hopefully that will help.

  • I used to be this way too, but poor DD is the 2nd and is already getting treated as such :( We are doing gray walls too...I went to the store, spent a considerable amount of time analyzing the different grays and then just ordered a gallon of the one I liked best. Worst case scenerio, I hate it after DH paints the room and go buy a different one (and then DH kills me).

That's what my issue is, I don't want blue hues. Thanks!
  • I did (about yellow) but was able to get advice from a friend who is an interior decorator for the right shade. If you have someone that works in design or just has the knack for it ask them to come over and look.

I drove my husband crazy when choosing colors for our house! After the fact he thanked me and told me he loved the colors. :)
  • It was difficult. I spent many lunch breaks staring at color chips and pintrest. We wanted something that worked with the bedding we picked but also that we would not have to repaint when he out grows crib. Finally just made a call and stuck with it.

There are some that have purple hues, which may work out well for you. It is a difficult color to work with.
  • Are you using a specific crib set? Depending on what you're doing this might be a stretch but we are using the Carter's jungle collection (jungle jill). I actually did a Google search for recommended paint colors for that collection. We actually found that baby super mall sold colors that they recommended for that collection so we actually ordered our paint online from them and it's a perfect match. So if you are using a specific collection you might try looking online for recommendations.
  • Go to a specialty paint store like Benjamin Moore. They should have someone that can walk you through paint colors and undertones to ensure you get the right one. I'm always inspired at Benjamin Moore 8->

Me too! My company sells Benjamin Moore so we have a special training room dedicated to their paint so I hung out in there during those mentioned lunch breaks!
  • We were going to do gray as well for our baby girls walls, but didn't like the shades when we tested. We decided to go with a super light pink that is almost white :) we love it....got it at Home Depot. Then we will have pink gray and white as the colors of the nursery....with a few bright pops of teal!
  • I just finished painting the nursery gray. It's tempered gray by Valspar (slight griege due to brown undertones). The samples I got were $1.50 each so pick up 4 shades you think you might like, throw it up, it might be easier.

Thanks for all the suggestions! We aren't doing a specific bedding set. I'm just trying to piece things together, for a simple yet vintage look. We got pink and white shevron sheets from target and our crib is white.

We have greige in our house, I love the nuetral tones!
  • I'm a total gray person. My entire house is pretty much different shades of gray except the kids rooms. The husband loves bright obnoxious colours so I let him go to town when painting their rooms.

  • i struggled with this too - as we wanted grey for the room. I ended up picking a grey that looked grey (without blue hues) in the swatch - but once it was painted I can pick up the faintest blue hues to my eye, mostly in the corners of the room where the ceiling light doesn't quite extend too. If I could do it over again, ya maybe I would pick a different one but I feel like I would find something wrong with another shade too. We threw up some yellow/goldy chevron curtains, have white baby furniture and a black recliner/glider and its really toned any hue I see at all. I figure once I get some art on the walls, and some better light bulbs in the ceiling light it will tone it down even more. the pops of yellow and even the black lead my eye elsewhere and give the perception of a much softer grey now.

It truly is the most difficult colour - because just like blue hues you can get a spectrum of other hues as well - green, purple, etc! Like a PP said, Benjamin Moore customer service should be able to walk you through the best options (undertones and blue hues taken into consideration) and point you in the right direction.

    GL!!!

  • I did baby blue. I didn't know what else to do but I like the color
  • I'm so terrible at picking paint colors. It took me 4 trips to Home Depot to pick out the perfect shade of red for our breakfast table. Gray is even more difficult! We lucked out when we bought our house last November because one bedroom was already painted the perfect shade gray. Of course, we didn't know that we were expecting at that time but when we found out (2 weeks later) we decided that would be our nursery. I'm not exactly sure what name of the color is but the previous owners left us the extra paint for touch ups (which will probably be needed with a little boy).
  • The Pinterest idea is good, you can find the paint brand and color that way. But you need to go to the store and look at the paint color in the correct 'light'. I've always used Kelly Moore (if that's available in your area). They are the best and will let you sample the color in store before purchasing, and they are about the same price as Lowe's/Home Depot. I know grey can be tricky; what I did to my nursery was painted the walls a neutral color and accented with my 'colors'. I'm having a girl, my colors are pink and gold, but I didn't want a pink explosion in my nursery. So I painted the walls a light tan and bought a huge pink rug and pink curtains. I bought a white crib and a light wood glider. I have pink and gold accents. This is just an idea if you can't find the right grey to paint the walls.

Oh me too when we moved in! I had the entire downstairs painted rather quickly (and it looks awesome might I so modestly add). Prior to picking colors I would go and buy like 10 different samples - I swear I lived at Sherwin Williams!! But now I am kind of over our house lol and so I'm not being as picky. That and I've adopted the, "Eh, it's paint, if I don't like it we can always change it," attitude (for better or worse).
  • Our house is done in gray and we went through about 12 samples before picking Hazy Stratus by Valspar (at Lowes). It's a tough color to pick!

We bought this house almost a year ago and I painted a gray striped wall in our bedroom that I am in love with. I'm going to AW it here because my H does not appreciate how beautiful gray is.

    I love that!

Our house is mostly grey. We chose Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter and it really feels like the perfect grey. Not too blue or too cold. We used the lighter version, Edgecomb Grey, in areas that had less light. Try it!
  • We used Benjamin Moore's Barren Plain for the grey in our daughter's room and it looks great with the lighting in there. I think it's a good idea to get a bunch of paint chips and look at them at different times of day.

That's the color we have through our house too! I love it and contemplated using it for the nursery, but it's more beige than what I'm looking for (at least that's how it looks in our house). I think we are going to head to Benjamin Moore tomorrow night and get some samples. :)
  • I used Benjamin Moore "greytint" and it is a perfect light grey color! Doesn't seem to have any other colors really come through.

I went with a sage green/grey color- trying to pick the right one drove me (and my husband) crazy! But we finally found one :)
  • All this talk of grey walls!  We are going grey for this little guy too.  We got samples of two colors and will just pick one of them.  Luckily we aren't trying to match anything so it is just what we prefer.

We were walking around pottery barn kids and we really liked the gray they had on their walls. They had light French gray from sherwin williams. When we went to sherwin williams they told us it was an older color and they don't have it anymore, so then we went to a local Ace hardware store and they were able to mix us the same color but with Benjamin Moore aura paint. My husband painted the room last night, and we love it! :x

It looks great! I love that gray!
  • @mrsb30 ...Great Minds!
  • My whole house is basically gray lol. The nursery was actually already gray but I'm getting so tired of it that we ended up painting it Aqua. It's nice and calming... But more girly. I love it.

It did take us a while to agree on the right shade. I wanted a much lighter shade than DH did.

We did this little girls room in two different grays... But to me they look practically purple! It's all good, that's what we were going fog, but it just blows my mind that a paint color called Excalibur Gray (don't remember the other one) can look so... NOT gray. Our guest room is a completely different gray (Covered in Platinum by Dunn Edwards) and it's crazy to me how both are considered "gray" but are so different.

Im too fickle to paint....so I have chosen wall decals that are light green, light blue, brown dots. His nursery furniture is espresso and his changing pad are those color dots. So with the decals, I can change colors when I want..no painting and I can use accent pillow or a throw rug for color...win-win! LOL
  • I drove myself and husband nuts over paint colors and repainted living room because it had too much blue. My favorite gray in our house is Benjamin Moore fusion. It's from the affinity line. It's more of a medium gray than light gray depending what kind of light, but I have used it in a couple rooms and it looks "true gray" in each! Good luck!

I'm doing navy and grey. 3 walls navy, one wall navy and gray chevron. I found the navy I wanted then asked the person at the paint counter for help in picking the grey. I also didn't want a gray with undertones because I want it to pop. You could also try getting sample sizes.
  • My little princesses room is pink and grey. The pink is called pretty and pink and the grey is called conventional grey. I love it ^-^
