Baby Names

Opinions on first and last name having the same letter?

we have chosen our girl name; Scout Iris Elizabeth F-last name, and while we love the boy name we picked; Fox Orion James F-last name, we are unsure of it with having the same first letter of first and last name.
Thoughts?
Are we over thinking this?
Thanks! :)

Sometimes it works ok and sometimes it's too much, really depends on the last name and how they sound together

I think the bigger issue is that you want to name your children Scout and/or Fox.

To each their own I guess. I understand people's reasoning for not liking the names but we of course have our own reasons for choosing them :)
  • Love Scout. Are you a To Kill A Mockingbird fan?

    Very much so! Thanks!
  • I think it really just depends on the last name. Typically I am not a fan of alliteration because it sounds too cutesy, however, having said that, our LO due in July will have first and last names starting with S. The double S actually works in our case. I did have to cross off Scarlett from our girl list and Shane from our boy list because it was too much with our last name. It's hard to help without knowing the last name.
  • I think Fox makes a badass middle name. It's trying to hard as a first name though.

I get the Harper Lee love, but I would keep Scout as a nickname or middle name at most. No one actually wants to put Scout on a resume. She'll be an adult for so much longer then she'll be a child.
Yes. All of this. That's what I meant to say.
  • I love the names Scout and Fox! Don't change a thing!
  • Like others said, I think it just depends on the first and last name. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

That being said, my dad really wanted to name me Scout. I am so so so grateful my mom vetoed it. Think about how your child might view their name one day.

If my child truly hates it knowing the meaning and why we chose it for her, she is free to go by her middle name Iris of course! I know many people who go by their middle names.
Of course we hope she wouldn't have to resort to that because we see nothing wrong with the name.
  • Lol I never understand people's reasoning for saying names are "trying too hard"
I know someone who vetoed the name Sadie for that reason. ???
Trying too hard to what? Be a name?

TO sound cool, hipster, bad ass, awesome, unique......

  • Trying to hard to be outside of the box by using two very uncommon names together. Trying to hard to draw attention to the uniqueness of their name. Trying to hard to rebel against the hipster, trendy names and missing the mark. But that's just my opinion.

ETA I like Sadie. My ILs named their dog Sadie though so not an option for us.

Gotcha. I honestly understand what you're saying but I have to disagree. It is interesting to hear others opinions though! So thank you. Hearing opposition actually has cemented our choices because it made us think about why we really wanted these names.
Just to be clear Fox is the first name and Orion and James are middle names. Orion was chosen because of my DH's love of astronomy. James because it was my father's middle name and his father's as well. But James doesn't seem to be an issue for anyone ;)

And yeah I love the name Sadie! And it's actually DH's grandmother's name so it was a contender for us for a bit :)

Unfortunately, it's not possible to control how people react to names. A lot of people told you it was too much. You know the advice of taking one piece of jewelry off before leaving the house? If you're set on a "cool" name, you should put it in the middle or use a traditional middle name to balance it out.

Are Iris and Elizabeth not traditional to you?

Thanks for letting everyone know what the rules are for choosing a name.
  • I think it just depends on the names. Sometimes it sounds fine and sometimes it's a little sing-songy. With Fox, it might be a little much or sound like a cartoon/comic book character. Hard to say without knowing the last name.
  • I think starting with the same letter for first and last name is fine. Love Scout! Fox is not my favorite. I'd do Atticus to keep with the theme. ;)

Iris and Elizabeth are very traditional.

    Orion is not.

And double middle names are an entirely different beast. Unless it's a family tradition, I'd recommend skipping it because it can be a hassle for legal paperwork and documents.

Good on you for owning your choices, but other people are not going to have all that information that your H is into astronomy and I seriously still don't get using the nn of a character. Other people will make judgements based on the information they have. You are judged by your name and how it is spelled, that is a fact of life.

There's a difference between rules and advice. That whole words have meanings thing.

If you come here to ask for opinions on a name, you are opening that name to be judged by the "rules" people have for their own self & the baby naming process.
Umm yeah. Thanks for clarifying that. Really helpful.

Fairly certain I'm making perfect sense? My name rules? I don't want anything on the top 100 list. Person 2 name rules: Nothing frilly for a girl. Person 3 name rules: Only comic book character names.

Each person has a set of rules that they govern by. There is not a universal list of name rules, just billions of people specific rules. So by asking the opinions of others, their personal rules will influence the outcome of advice you receive.

    Clearer?

  • Okay let's not freak out! Names seem to get people into a tizzy. I was really trying to keep an argument from happening!
I posted this so I knew that some opinions would be different from my own. And that's okay! I welcome hearing other options and suggestions.

Thanks to the people who answered my title question. It seems like we are over thinking the same letter thing. Our last name is Mennonite and would work fine with Fox. No rhyming and not even the same amount of syllables :)
    So thanks!
  • I'm not a huge fan of alliteration names in general, but it really depends on the name. In your case, I think it might be a little much. Pairing Fox with an F name could make it sound silly and cartoonish.

Not a fan of Scout but at least you're not being a lemming and using Harper! I fell into having the same first and last initial when I got married and I actually really like it. Got to love an alliteration! I agree with pp that Orion Fox is probably better in this situation, regardless of your last name.

    EDD for #1: 3/19/17
  • It's usually not terrible unless it looks like you're trying to do it.

Cadence and balance rules still apply of course.
  • I'm not one for weirdass attention-seeking names but i DO happen to be one for space names. Orion is pretty cool, actually.
  • I think it's great! He'll sound like a super hero! Clark Kent, Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, etc. Go for it!
