Baby Beats App on iphone

So I'm 10 weeks and yesterday I thought about buying a home Doppler to check baby's heartbeat.  Then I thought, I'll check apps for my phone for the heck of it.  Saw this app for Baby Beats that got rated really well...thought I'll give it a whirl...not expecting much.  OMG, I tried it and it found my baby's heartbeat after a few tries beating away at 132bpm.  I couldn't believe it...my husband was shocked too!!  Being skeptical...I had my husband try it on his belly just to see if it was fake...put it on his and it did nothing.  You are able to record it so I did and sent it to my mom...she was blown away. So exciting!!!  Crazy how this can be done on your CELL PHONE!

  • That is so exciting! :) I have an android so I'm jealous. Lol
  • Loading the player...
  • That's so cool! I've heard about that app and want to try it. I thought it couldn't work until beyond 18 weeks though, but i'm 10w also so maybe ill try it :)

I thought the same thing!  I wasn't expecting much when I got it but it did work for me.  It took a little to find it and you have to wait a little when you try a spot.  I just tried it again this morning and it was reading 143bpm.  It's nice for me because I don't have another appt until June 30 and we want to announce to our kids this weekend.

  • Which app did you use?
  • I just bought the app and tried for like 30 minutes and nothing
  • Is it the My Baby Beats for $4.99?

  • Will you verify which one it is exactly. My Baby's Beat is coming up for $4.99, but it only has 7 reviews/3.5 stars.I'll totally buy it, but i just want to make sure i'm getting the same one you did.
  • Sorry...it's actually called "Baby Heartbeats"...by BrazilSoft.  It is rated 5 out of 5 stars.  I think it was $4.99.

I wouldn't get to worked up if it isn't working for you right away...I know it's early to be able to detect it and it really depends on where you baby is positioned, etc.  Just saying that it worked for me and I was surprised.

  • But how does it work?

  • Just holding the microphone part of your iPhone to your belly. I push down hard enough so I'm getting closer to baby. Like I said, it takes a little time but once you find it and know where to place phone, it becomes pretty easy.

  • Huh, well it didn't find baby's heartbeat, but it also didn't find mine. Oh well. @ToneGirl glad it worked for you!
  • It didn't work too well in the beginning for me either. But now it is. It still can't find my heartbeat but it can find my husbands when he holds it up to his chest. I mean it's not going to be super accurate but it's something.

Found Mine lower than I thought it'd be. 151 at 10 weeks! So cool!!
  • Girls I've gotten anywhere from 78 to 98 to 112 to 126.. I'm 13 weeks today. How do you tell what's your own heartbeat from baby's?!!
  • Absolutely couldn't get it to work but oh well. It's meant for later in pregnancy.

Thanks for the PSA @BostonBaby1. I'm sure not everyone reads the directions thoroughly!

Many thanks! And don't worry about it not working yet, when you get further along and baby is closer to surface that should work just fine!
  • Yeah I was completely shocked that it worked for me since I knew the app was designed for much later in pregnancy.

Adult heart rates should be anywhere between 60-100.  When I was getting ratings of 132-151bpm, I knew I was getting the baby's heart rate.  Hearing it is so awesome too!!

Please don't get upset if it is not working for you yet...I didn't mean for ladies to get worried or anything.  I would think a smaller percentage will actually get it to work this early.

@tonegirl i remember you saying you're thin- my doc has told me that it's easier to get a good ultrasound and a good heartbeat when the mom is on the thinner side.
  • Yes that is true.  I am pretty thin so I figured that was helping my case too.

  • Anyone know where I should hold it? Down low by top of underwear line?
  • I was finding mine about 1-2 inches below my belly button and slightly off to the right (when looking down).

  • Thank you @ToneGirl glad you could get it to work!
  • @ToneGirl Thanks for the tip!! I've been debating buying a doppler so gave this a try. I'm 10 weeks and also could hear the beat! It was pretty crazy. I don't think I trust that it's completely accurate but it's pretty cool!
  • One more question. How can you tell BPM? Does the app tell you or did you count?
  • The app tells you bpm. But the beat you hear doesn't sound the same as it does at the OB. Just a heads up.
  • Ok, I tried it and whether or not it is accurate is beyond me, but I got it to work! 13 weeks, 1 day, 143 heart rate. Again, not putting money on its accuracy, but still fun!

I'm plus size girl (size 22 US) and I was able to get this app to work!  Honestly I didn't think it would but after about 15-20 minutes of fiddling around with it I got a heart rate of 132 (mine was 80).  :)  So cool!!!.

    Edited to add - I'm 11 weeks 2 days
  • I know that's what it's registering, but I don't think your baby's heartbeat is actually only in the 130s, that's really low for 10 weeks! When I use my sonoline doppler and find the HB it SAYS it's in the 130s but when I count the beats (I count them for 10 seconds then multiply by 6) it's actually over 160. I know every baby is different but it should still be in the 150s-160s at this stage.

Just to be clear I'm not saying I think your baby's HB is low, I'm saying I think it's not able to count every beat so it's giving you a low reading, even though you are finding the heartbeat. I never trust the number on my doppler because I can tell it isn't accurate. Finding the heartbeat at home is so exciting, but try counting the beats to get an accurate reading.

  • I do not think that the bpm is accurate either.  But I'm pretty sure it picked up the baby because I picked up my heartbeat several times at 80 bpm and then when I finally found baby it jumped up to 132.  :)  (although a normal heartbeat at 12 weeks can vary between 120 and 180 - 132 is on the low side of that).

That heartbeat is fine from what I'm told. As PP said, 120-180 is a-ok
  • Oh I got it to work! Heart rate was all over the place (101-147) but it was fun to find :)

Those who can't get your own heartbeat-
You must take your phone out of its case if it goes around the bottom of your phone
  • I tried my own heartbeat first and it registered 80bpm. When I tried the baby's, I got a wide range of bpm's. The lowest was 78 and the highest was 147. I am guessing that it is not always very consistent, reports lower than what the heartbeat actually is, and that the baby changes positions which is why the bpm can change so quickly. Still, this app is super cool and well worth $5. It is really nice to know that the heart is beating, whether the bpm is accurate or not. So neat! I'm going to the doctor tomorrow and might ask him what he thinks about this app. :) Thanks for sharing!!!

This is super cool!!! Totally found the heart beat and I'm on the fluffy side. I was having a pretty bad day and this just made me feel so much better! Thank you for the post and the recommendation!
