Dogs know when you're pregnant!?

Has anyone noticed that dogs seem to act differently around you now that you're pregnant? DH's aunt and uncle have two Airedale Terriers (large dogs) and they normally just plow right into me when I see them, but last weekend they were super careful around me! Also the same with his cousin's labradoodle who is full of energy and loves jumping up on people-instead he put his head on my foot! Just something that I have been noticing ;)

my friends dog always sniffs my stomach but my two dogs are totally the same as usual they aren't doing/acting any different :P

  • My one cat has been extra affectionate with me and is always trying to cuddle with me. He doesn't leave my side now. I think he knows something's different.
  • That's funny! "Meet" a new dog tonight and he tried jumping up on DH, but with me he was like nope I know better ;)

My dog knows. I was pregnant with my 5 yr old dd when I got him as a puppy and he is extra protective and loving towards me. I noticed it about the time I learned I was pregnant

My dog is still a puppy.. She has crazy amount of energy and still acts the same. I have to be careful she doesn't jump on my stomach.
  • My dog is acting anxious around me like she does when I'm sick.  I wonder if we smell different.
  • My cat never bothered with me much, he preferred attention from other males but since i got pregnant he follows me around and sleeps on my stomach. I think he knows

I have 2 staffs, my eldest who is 6 knew i was pregnant with my 5 year old she used to lay in my bed around my bump and protect me :-) i think females feel it more as my pup who is now 15 months is having a phantom pregnancy from being around me. They sense crazy things. If they can sense cancer etc im pretty sure they can sense a baby moving around inside you lol xx
  • Nope. Dog and cat never acted any differently the first time around, and they aren't acting any differently now.

  • We have two dogs a rot and pitbull both have been super calm around me. The pitbull has been more attached to my hip than normal and snuggles with me more and sniffs my belly a lot. They probably new before I did. Just something they know they have such great sense of smells probably can smell the hormone changes.
  • I train and walk dogs for a living and nope, they are still their normal rambunctious selves :)

One of my cats has been extra snuggly, the other is himself. My dachshund, on the other hand, hasn't been jumping on me anymore. Thank goodness!
  • Our cat is very loving and snuggly right now and our dog is very quiet and doesn't jump on me.....however both of them play tag with each other and run around like they are batshit crazy. When DH gets home from work our runs up and jumps up on him and wants hugs. I read somewhere that animals know you are pregnant they just don't know how many you are having.
  • I have a miniature schnauzer and an aussie/collie mix. The miniature schnauzer is a grump as usual but our bigger dog always comes and lays by me and rubs his head on my belly. Not sure if he knows or if he is just extremely awkward.
  • The night before I found out I'm pregnant, my black lab climbed onto the couch to cuddle (he usually doesn't do that). Then he started sniffing my belly & then suddenly jumped back looking very concerned and his ears were up! He did that twice, almost like "WHOA! Something new is in there!!". Now that he "knows" he doesn't sniff my belly anymore. He's such a smartie! :)
  • We have 2 dogs and a cat at work (weird I know but the boss brings them in everyday) and the cat is always all over me lately when she usually hides from people all day. The 1 dog acts exactly the same as always but the other has stayed around my feet instead of jumping on me. So weird!
  • Our cat did! She also got really clingy right before I went ito labor last time - and she's NOT a clingy cat. Like, she followed me from room to room and even watched me shower and sleep. Weird, huh?
  • Thanks for sharing ladies! It's fun to hear about how some animals react differently while others don't :)

We used to have a beagle and whenever either one of was sick she would stay by your side and just watch over you, it was cute!

  • My husky was normally very stand off-ish. She didn't like to cuddle, and would prefer to be outside all day. Now, she likes to be in the same room as me and sometimes touching me. And she won't be outside for more than 10 minutes without barking to come in. She has never asked to come inside before I was pregnant. I normally have to bribe her to come inside! My Viszla seems to be acting normally still. He tries to pounce on me and acts crazy as usually. Haha

My boxer mix is like an early pregnancy test. She starts sleeping with her head on my tummy just before it would be time to test.
  • We have a 3 month old min pin/terrier mix. She's loves to cuddle my stomach :)
  • Awwwww! @LC122 and @AudriannaMaria I want to see pictures of your fur babies! :x

My dog gets stuck to me like glue when I'm pregnant... it's like they can sense the hormones or something? Probably not, but it makes sense in my mind.

My in laws pit bull growled at me when I first got pregnant...normally he won't leave me alone and jumps on me. He's gone back to normal, but he definitely growled the first time he saw me after I got pregnant.
  • @DH09072012 I think they can sense the hormones too :)

We call her Furst Child. Here she is reading with her little sister.
  • My two dogs have to follow me every where now and are very very whiney. As for my cat, she usually hates being in the house and know wants to be all the time and is whiney now too lol
  • My golden is never mean to other dogs but since I've become pregnant, he growls at and chases away dogs if they come near me. Same goes for SO, he's got a huge crush on him hehe so he NEVER used to bark at him or anything. But now if I act like SO is hurting me (we recently found this out when he tickled me and I yelled out), Banks will run over, guard me, and bark at SO! It's the funniest thing.

This isn't very different, but he NEVER leaves my side. He's always stuck by me, like in the same room. But now he tries to always be practically on top of me at all times.

It's very fun to watch the changes in him! I'm excited to see how he acts when baby is actually here.

At first Shiloh seemed mad at me but now she just sits out side the bathroom door when I'm getting sick
  • Aww she's concerned for you! Hope you're not sick often!

  • My cats are always mama obsessed, but they now are pretty disinterested in SO. I think his feelings are hurt. The graybies knew last time and stayed with me through my bed rest when I was on half days. They're pretty clingy right now, but that could also be because they know I'm hormonal and if they cry I'll feed them cookies and give them snuggles.
  • This is so cute to read. We have a 6 month old cockapoo, he still has a lot of energy and wants to play all the time, but he is very clingy with me, follows me everywhere (even to bathroom). I don't know if it is due to the pregnancy/hormones, I conceived roughly a month after we got him, but it is nice to think that he could know. Also, he watches me take my weekly bump shots and he is in every single one of them. Haha example below.

  • I wish my dogs did that. My bigger dog, a pit, has been jumping up on me for the past couple weeks! Very unusual for her!
  • I too have noticed that my pup is extra clingy to me! Love the puppy affection
  • Our akita has been more affectionate lately but the wolf hybrid has been the same as always. I wonder if it has anything to do with the akita being female and the wolf is male.
