  • Ok, I have a question. I plan on breastfeeding, should I wait to get a tattoo until after I stop completely?

Ok, I have a question. I plan on breastfeeding, should I wait to get a tattoo until after I stop completely?

I am not sure of if it's recommended or not but I have a good friend who is basically my personal breastfeeding guru and she just got a tattoo, even though she's still breastfeeding her third child, and I'm pretty sure she was breastfeeding her other kids when she got most of her other tattoos, too. So, I think it's ok? But I'm a FTM with no experience/medical background.

Interestingly, my friend's latest one was a tattoo of a woman breastfeeding!

ETA this would be a great question for the lactation consultant at your hospital or pediatrician's office if you don't have a satisfactory answer by then!

  • Thanks! I plan on asking my dr today and then the pediatrician once I have him. But I will ask the lactation consultant in the hospital. This is my third baby but my first time breastfeeding.

  • Hey has anyone woken up with sore abs after sleeping at night. I am assuming it could be contractions at night but not sure. I rested all day yesterday bc I had contractions that morning but they were only in my pelvic/vaginal area and they were erratic.
  • @scorredor2 As far as tattoos and breastfeeding go, tattoos usually only go through the top layer or two of skin and not into he bloodstream (I have a few myself and this is what my artist told me) so it shouldn't get transferred into your milk supply. The biggest concern is making sure you go to a safe and sanitary place so as not to run the risk of disease. And avoid areas on or around the breasts for the time being. As long as it's taken care of it should be ok.

I'm a FTM and not a doctor or tattoo expert, but the artist I go to explained the process to me, so that's my understanding of it.

I wish my abs did anything...........

Those things are lazy and nonexistent. The least they could do is work themselves out while I sleep!

My stomach and ab muscles hurt every night and morning because I switch sides a few times overnight and it's so much effort it causes pain.
  • Dumb question: I know that no one can predict when labor will occur. So where does the rumor come from that FTMs typically deliver late? I googled stats online and there are very few. It feels like something everyone says but there's no proof of it. One site said the average FTM delivers at 41.1 weeks but again, where does this even come from?

Hmm. That's a good question! I've heard everyone say that, but yeah, never any statistics. Maybe it's another OWT!

I did some reading on tattoos during pregnancy cause I had been looking around for an artist for my next tattoo when I found out I was pregnant. From what I read, the ban on tattoos during pregnancy stems from avoiding disease, and also avoiding infection. Because our bodies are basically immune compromised during pregnancy, its easier to get an infection even when sterile equipment is used, and the infection can then spread to the baby thru the umbilical cord. I didn't read anything about breastfeeding, but following that path logically I would *think* that it *should* be OK while breastfeeding, as I don't *think* you can pass an infection thru breastmilk, and after recovery from birth your body shouldn't be as compromised so your immune system is better. But this is all totally just conjecture on my part.

It's something I "generally" see in patients. But I would have no idea the hard evidence on it. @hoodoll82
  • I delivered four days late with my first I'm assuming since a first time mom's body has never delivered before...nothing has ever been stretched out. So it just takes the laboring process more time. Not sure if that made any sense. Could just be a strange cowinkydink.

@hoodoll82 my water broke 2 days before my due date with my first, and went 10 days late with my second. I have a friend who just had her first baby and she went 8 days early
  • @hoodoll82 .. I never go by what is "usual" because really.. it isn't accurate. Just like when nurses tell FTMs that they will be in labor forever, also not true. There are so many what ifs and unknown related to labor and delivery, I think medical professionals naturally need some sort of control to hold onto and that's all we really have.. But you are right, actual statistics don't prove it to be true

Anyone feel like a shock feeling in your belly when you moved a certain way or got up from sitting? I just did and it scared the crap outta me
  • Totally had a disagreement with my ob yesterday who seemingly was on board with my plan for as natural of a delivery as possible with the least medical interventions, so I am calling out to the many L&D nurses I know are on here and anyone with experience in this situation.

When discussing if my water broke before contractions started (assuming I'm GBS) negative, I wanted to know how long I could try to induce labor at home and he basically told me I have to come right in to start pit if that happens. Now, I'm not a labor and delivery nurse... I am an emergency room nurse who prefers NOT to deliver babies in the ER, my knowledge base is minimal in assisting patients through the process of labor as any deliveries I've usually had have been "I didn't know I was pregnant" type deals. But, from the research I've done on my own, starting pitocin immediately seems premature. Maybe I'm wrong and need to be educated? Of course my first thought is, not gonna happen buddy I'll stay home for four or five hours and see if labor starts on its own before I give you a call but like I said this is NOT my speciality. The research I've read seems as though it would be okay to give it a few hours.. Just curious what happened for others?

Also now after leaving that appointment I've become so concerned with his ideas of using pitocin to augment a seemingly normal labor. I will refuse if I'm progressing and it's just not fast enough for him I'm just so frustrated because it is something that we discussed and now his tune seems to have changed 100%. I'll also refuse to be in bed with pit so that fetal monitor better reach at least next to my bed so I can stand up.

So frustrated and anxious about this now.

@momtobe613 Our doctors like you to deliver within 12 hours of your rupture of membranes..... The window for infection is lower. Does everyone make the 12 hr window? Of course not. That is why they want to get pitocin going and get things started.
If the fetal monitor stays on there should be zero problem with you sitting in a recliner or standing at the side of the bed. Some hospitals have portable monitors.... We have one but it's shit.
  • @klkonwi

Thanks so much for your response. I understand the risk for infection just didn't know if going RIGHT in was absolutely necessary. I always appreciate a nurses opinion over a doctors who can sometimes be more sound at telling you if they're intervening in your best interest or trying to speed things up.

Of course I want a healthy baby and healthy mom; those are the priorities just was looking to see if that was the standard for all of you who work in L&D everyday. Thank you so much! && God bless you... I don't think I could do that job every day.

The doctor should give you a chance to contract on your own, but if you don't.... It's very common to have the pitocin started. :)@momtobe613

I was GBS negative with DS. My water broke, it was a slow leak so I went to the hospital to see if it was really my water. After having it confirmed (at 8pm, with rupture at 3ish) and no real contractions, they sent me home and told me to come back if contractions started and got to 5min apart. If this didn't happen by 6am, come back in for induction.

Because it was busy the next morning, they didn't get my pit started until 9am. I delivered DS via section at midnight.

Long story short, I didn't need to be induced right away when my water broke before labour.

I have always doubted those stats, too (the one I see most often is 41 w, 1 d or "8 days late"). The main reason being that it seems these days people freak out and induce pretty quickly after EDD, like 40w3d or whatever. Rarely do you hear of someone going to 42w. We all know some FTMs go early, so - just doesn't seem like the 41w1d could possibly still be the average. I do kind of think it might have been true 35 years ago (or more) as a shocking number of older women have told me they were 3 weeks late. Yikes.
  • @momtobe613 I totally agree it is a bit premature, but most OBs (being the highest sued Drs) don't mess around... Most hospitals and OBs will want to start pit right away.. There are some facilities (birth centers) that won't admit you just because your water broke.. They let you go home and labor on your own, and the experiences turn out to be somewhat different. The first hospital I worked at was a small town hospital, the OBs wanted baby delivered 24 hours after being ruptured..where I work now- at a huge city hospital now (baby factory of the state) where they get concerned if you aren't delivered after 18 hours. Some things that never made sense to me is the "more strict" OBs who want baby out now because of the risk of infection... don't restrict vaginal exams (which is where infection would come from, and will do other interventions like placing IUD caths (internal monitors) which also greatly increases chance of infection.. I really believe they should let you go longer, as long as they limit exams and don't need to put any internals in there really isn't any increased chance of introducing infection, but like I said it's not like that in most hospitals. Birth centers really have their place and are great for some people, I always encourage people research before picking a doctor, there are other options out there for the type of the experience they are looking for. I am a hospital person, I want all the drugs possible and an epidural right away, and although a big hospital that will be doing all interventions, it is baby friendly which would be the only deciding factor for me. Good luck! Hopefully your water won't break and you'll start labor at home and won't have to worry about it :)

I have a random unrelated to pregnancy question. I have been reading and following (lurking) the thread where the op and a responder had similar names. Now I clicked on both and one joined in May and another back in November or something like that. Anyways it got Me curious and I clicked on my username and it said I have been a member since 2011. I'm confused because I didn't join the bump until I downloaded the app back in September/October when I first got pregnant. However I belonged to the Knot and got married in 2012 and I did not know these two sites were related so could it be from then? I'm just confused and my brain is mush these days. TIA!
  • @dezpez07 yes the bump and knot and the nest are all basically branches of the same tree. So it remembers when you joined from when you were getting married

  • @mellymar okay I thought so I just didn't know for sure! Thank you for the response!
  • Are 5min apart contractions that last 30-35 seconds supposed to hurt? Because I'm timing mine and they don't hurt but they're showing this pattern

I have one too, that I've been meaning to ask for weeks!

Why is the first postpartum poop supposedly so terrible? Everything I've seen says take the stool softener, and that it will make you cry. But exactly what is the problem? Assuming no tearing or hemorrhoids, because obviously I can figure out why that would be bad. But otherwise?

I had zero tearing so my poop was basically painless. I was really terrified to do it but seriously, no big deal. I'm sure if you had an episiotomy or tearing it would be horrible!

@britneythebridexo 30-35 seconds long are not real contractions. Contractions need to be at least 50 seconds minimum ....
30-35 seconds long would be considered "irritability"

    Thanks for letting me know.
I am just so bad at timing them and deferring what's real and what's not.
My first was all back labor and my labor started with my water breaking at home. So this pregnancy is quite new to me.

@britneythebridexo yeah over the internet I can't tell if your timing them right. There's always a possibility your not. The app works well. It's easy to time how far apart they are but not as easy to tell how long they are.
  • @EIRuby and @klkonwi which timer app do you recommend? I see several.

Yes!! This happens to me often the morning after I had a day prior with lots of BH. It feels like I had been punched in the gut forsure.
