@ngaines27 I have pregnancy + health and parenting for iPhone app. Just press to start and stop. It can be tricky though because contractions can still be going on after you stop feeling the pain. They build to the strongest point and then come down like a hill. So people sitting at home could have longer contractions than they think. That's why it's just easier to know to go to l and d when you can't walk and talk through the pain. Counting contractions can get you worked up for a whole lot of nothing! Oh I also love this app because of the sweet 3d pics of what your baby should look like etc.... And if you play the video it progresses how the baby grows in utero.
Ok, I have a question. I plan on breastfeeding, should I wait to get a tattoo until after I stop completely?
I did some reading on tattoos during pregnancy cause I had been looking around for an artist for my next tattoo when I found out I was pregnant. From what I read, the ban on tattoos during pregnancy stems from avoiding disease, and also avoiding infection. Because our bodies are basically immune compromised during pregnancy, its easier to get an infection even when sterile equipment is used, and the infection can then spread to the baby thru the umbilical cord. I didn't read anything about breastfeeding, but following that path logically I would *think* that it *should* be OK while breastfeeding, as I don't *think* you can pass an infection thru breastmilk, and after recovery from birth your body shouldn't be as compromised so your immune system is better. But this is all totally just conjecture on my part.
oh this is a good one. my sister was breastfeeding her first and got a tattoo, its a small town and she used to work there for the owners, she was able tonget the tattoo but I guess they were kinda not too stoked that she got it while pregnant. but i think every shop would be different. so you may want to go into the place youre looking into and ask.
@momtobe613 I totally agree it is a bit premature, but most OBs (being the highest sued Drs) don't mess around... Most hospitals and OBs will want to start pit right away.. There are some facilities (birth centers) that won't admit you just because your water broke.. They let you go home and labor on your own, and the experiences turn out to be somewhat different. The first hospital I worked at was a small town hospital, the OBs wanted baby delivered 24 hours after being ruptured..where I work now- at a huge city hospital now (baby factory of the state) where they get concerned if you aren't delivered after 18 hours. Some things that never made sense to me is the "more strict" OBs who want baby out now because of the risk of infection... don't restrict vaginal exams (which is where infection would come from, and will do other interventions like placing IUD caths (internal monitors) which also greatly increases chance of infection.. I really believe they should let you go longer, as long as they limit exams and don't need to put any internals in there really isn't any increased chance of introducing infection, but like I said it's not like that in most hospitals. Birth centers really have their place and are great for some people, I always encourage people research before picking a doctor, there are other options out there for the type of the experience they are looking for. I am a hospital person, I want all the drugs possible and an epidural right away, and although a big hospital that will be doing all interventions, it is baby friendly which would be the only deciding factor for me. Good luck! Hopefully your water won't break and you'll start labor at home and won't have to worry about it
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I really appreciate all the expertise as I totally respect a nursing view so much.
As I do understand the risk of infection associated I won't wait too long to go to the hospital. Assuming that baby is getting a good trace on external monitor and isn't showing any decels/signs of distress is it okay to refuse internal monitoring if they try to push for that ? I already know that I will not allow multiple cervical checks but the internal monitoring is not something I am well versed in.
Again, thank you so much. You've been so helpful! I often don't post on the boards but I read a lot of them and let things soak in and you & @klkonwi continuously stick out as great nursing resources so thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!
@momtobe613 if you are GBS negative and ruptured most of our practices will allow you to stay home for 6-12ish hours to see if contractions will start on their own. Then it's in for induction. Theoretically now research shows that you should be induced as soon as you're ruptured if you're not actively in labor but...I want to see a meta-analysis of that research then compared with c-section rates of those patients. I just think once you start the cascade of pitocin you're inviting a lot more interventions...
If my water breaks before labor I plan on waiting a few hours before calling the doctor to let them know to see if labor starts (assuming the fluid is undoubtedly clear). My docs know this.
Thanks for your response. I agree with what your saying about starting intervention cascade. That was my primary concern... That now we're going to be on a time crunch for 18-24 hours depending on hospital policy and if it doesn't progress fast enough for them then I'll end with a c section. This is my first pregnancy and although I know labor is unpredictable I would like to avoid a c section if possible.
So, I like you intend to wait a few hours if my water breaks before contractions start. Although it seems unlikely, statistically I was reading less than 10% of people have their water break before they start contractions so I will just pray things go smoothly.

Hey guys I just went through this: water broke, they made me wait 6 hours to see if I started contracting (I didn't). Then I was directed to go to hospital and was given Cytocec (sp?) and given 3 hours to see if it had any effects. Even though I had some contractions it wasn't enough so they started Pitocin. I did have an epidural and catheter at 4 cm.
They were not strict on the 24 hour window as long as I was progressing by that window, which I was. I gave birth about 30 hours after initial water break.

Thanks for your reply & congrats on your new bundle. Did they push for internal fetal monitoring or external was okay?
@Frogger5 I have a 4th degree tear and was terrified of what the first poop would be like. It was nothing! I felt so relieved! Thank God for stool softeners though!

@momtobe613 we usually only use internal monitoring if we are having a tough time externally monitoring baby, or if baby has had decelerations in heart rate that are extended and we need an absolute clear picture at all times of the heart rate. It can only be done once the water has been broken, and of course anything you are introducing then ups the risk of infection so it is not done lightly. 90% of monitoring is done externally where I am. Most of the time it is not given as an option because it is of serious nature, but just recommended to the patient as "this is what I feel I need to do and why" by the OB. I have never seen internal monitoring placed willy-Nilly.

Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
How late can you get an epidural? I want to wait it out and see if maybe I can do it natural but, I've done that ish natural and I know how it hurts. I maaaay change my mind and get one last min. Just checking to see when my cut off would be.
Btw I'm most definitely asking my Dr tomorrow since we are talking over my birth plan. Just a thought I had tonight. Maybe someone else hasn't thought of it too.

It honestly just depends on your body and how/how quickly you progress. Your doctor will keep you updated as much as possible, though, so try not to stress about it.

At my hospital policy is 8cm. I got mine just in time! It honestly made everything so relaxed, I was actually laughing while I was pushing! It was a great decision for me.
@serenamarr I had a feeling I ordered the wrong one. They need to label it better... maybe with a "THIS IS THE ONE YOU WANT, CRAZY PREGNANT LADY" sticker. Thank you for helping me!! I'm gonna get that tea... couldn't hurt right?!

My hospital is 7cm. So you should probably just ask!

The hospital I delivered DS at didn't have a cm cutoff. As long as the baby wasn't crowning they would try (I say "try" because I don't know how easy it would be to do during transition).
