I miss a good hoppy beer- my husband drinks really crappy beer, so stealing sips of his isn't even an option. As for grandma's who "know best" my MIL saved all of her kids' cribs so that she could pass them on when they have their own baby. Of course his sisters were so excited to get their cribs that it caused such an ordeal that we said we didn't want my husband's drop-side crib.
My Mother is very opinionated, generally. I can't think of anything safety-wise that she's been way off on, however. She reads a lot and is totally into Facebook and general internet-sleuthing, so I think she keeps up on all the safety precautions. Even though her generation was NOT encouraged to breastfeed as much (she was formula fed and I think she BF'd me and my younger brother but not my sister) she really has been encouraging it. "WHY WOULD YOU NOT BF after all the studies?!"
So, all and all...just a normal annoying Mom, but nothing crazy with safety or still living in the 80s.
My grandmother encouraged me to only purchase a car seat after I had checked all the safety recalls and that consumer reports has tested it for safety....um thanks? I told her I would also make sure I only look at cars to buy that have seat belts too just in case!!
It was really strange and not worth explaining to her that if it has been recalled they don't put it on the shelves and you can't sell a car seat in the USA that hasn't been tested. She only had one baby and it's been a long time... She also told me to have them use twilight sleep...I was like...granny I don't think they do that anymore.
My mom is wonderful! Dont get me started on MIL... -_- must be the pregnancy hormones or something because I know her intentions are not bad! She keeps buying me used stuff and even asked me to pay her back on some occasions! I am talking a bag full of used teddy bears ewwwww and LOTS of toys. The kinda of toys I use to play with as a child .. that have tissue on it and plays music so cant wash it... and the boxes of clothing from garage sales are just pilling up! Shes gone crazy! Oh and she picked up a high chair that was on the side of the road waiting for dump truck.. and it goes on

I can see how the used toys might be a cause for concern, but personally I see nothing wrong with used clothing or high chairs, as long as they're in good condition. Why spend the extra money on clothes that LO won't even wear for a year? Both my mom and my MIL have been hitting up the thrift stores like crazy and I for one greatly appreciate it!
Oh I do appreciate it! I went and got lots of used clothing myself! But I pretty sure im up to 50 pjs and onesies of every size by now I have way to much lol and the high chair was in the garbage for a reason you should see this thing :S lol BUT I probably am over reacting I am just ready to be done... patience is wearing out hehe

Oh wow! Well, good luck! I know it can be tough storing things when you get them in bulk like that... hopefully the clothes in good enough condition that you can resell them once LO grows out of them - that might make it all worth it

Haha. She sounds like my MIL. I would agree that the used clothes aren't so bad, but I would disagree with PP about the highchair. Especially one en route to the landfill. While it couuuuuuld be perfectly fine, it could be a death trap. Of course, if it came from someone I knew, then that would be different.
My mom's been visiting this week and is beyond wonderful. She's also real nutty! Her thing the past few days has been that my baby hasn't "dropped." I told her the doctor did an U/S showing the head is engaged. She didn't like that and doesn't believe it. So she just oh so casually works it into conversation a few times a day that she's still waiting for LO to drop. She'll point out other pregnant ladies, "Oh look, she's dropped!" Makes me laugh. Love my crazy mama. She'd probably catfish this board if she knew how to.
I don't have a problem with used clothes but I would have a problem with being asked for reimbursement for something I didn't ask for or want in the first place.

That's a good point. I'd probably at least check it out, on the off chance that it's in good condition but the previous owners just wanted to get it off their hands. But since OP says it's in bad condition, I don't blame her for not wanting to keep it!
I can sympathize with over zealous MIL shopping. I'm a minimalist and she's a borderline hoarder, so it can cause some tension. I'm always trying to be gracious and enforce boundaries, which is a fine line to walk.
Thankfully both my mother and MIL are both pretty level headed so I don't get un-wanted advice YET ( we will see once LO is here) however my BILs mother just told me that she suggests once the baby is about 6 months old I should lay him on a bed and place some pillows on the floor beside the bed and proceed to roll LO off onto those pillows :-O she said it was for good luck, and I was in such shock that I couldn't even respond.
I feel for you ladies with the buying crazy MILs-mine bought so much when DD was born my own mom really didn't buy much because she knew I would have too much. I've talked to her multiple times about it-it's not that I'm not grateful for it but she buys so much that we literally don't have any room for it (she has 2 dressers AND a closet full of clothing) and I've asked her to please not buy anything we don't have any room, she's growing so fast, etc. but when DH took DD down to his parents house this past weekend he came home with a bag of new clothing his mom bought DD! I told MIL we needed stuff for DS but she doesn't seem to want to do that. She always wanted a daughter but never had one so she's trying to make up for it by drowning MY daughter in clothing-I've actually given things away with the tags still on because kids can only wear one outfit at a time and it was getting ridiculous! >:P

That's why we haven't told MIL it's a girl! I don't want to give her one extra minute to shop because I already know there will be a Pepto-Bismol pink explosion when she finds out.
