Well, this is interesting -- I got my first ever summons for jury duty today, I'm supposed to report May 28th and my due date is June 3rd! There's a note on the summons about being excused for mental or physical disability reasons... I assume they don't want me going into labor there so I'm not too worried about being excused, but I think I will have to provide a physican's note or something. Will have to call tomorrow and figure out the details!

I work in the courthouse. You may be able to just call in. Otherwise just show up the day you are summoned and if you get called for a panel just tell them you can have a baby any day. They will excuse you without a doctors note if you look pregnant. It takes a lot of time and money for a case to go to trial and they aren't going to risk it on a pregnant woman. There are other people who can be selected and are less of a risk.
That's a helpful perspective, thanks! This is my first experience with jury duty. I found out that what I'm being called to report for is actually just to sign up for a week later in the year when I'll come back and serve. The woman I spoke to in the jury commission office said they generally try to give new mothers weeks as far out as possible, e.g. 11-12 months from now. She told me the commissioner was going to "make arrangements" for me and he was supposed to call me back today, but I know they were busy before the holiday weekend; I expect to hear from him Tuesday. I think he may be able to assign me a week without my having to go downtown and wait through the process next week, which would be great. I'm not crazy about the idea of driving downtown by myself, parking a ways away from the building, walking that distance, and then sitting and waiting for several hours, when I'm pretty uncomfortable right now and truly could go into labor at any point. I'm sure it'll work out one way or another though!

I don't envy the folks who work in that office. I had such a hard time getting someone on the phone, I thought the line must be out of service; I kept getting a busy signal. Finally called the mayor's office and she told me I was the 6th or 7th person she'd talked to today who said the same thing, but that the line was working and you just had to keep calling until you got through. She said the summons had just been mailed out for the month so EVERYONE was calling. Having never been called for jury duty in any other city I've lived in, I don't know if this is just Memphis, or if other cities have similar issues.
I live about 5 minutes from Memphis! That's so funny. Good Luck!
  • @MrsWiggleWaggle glad kitty is home and on the road to recovery. So nerve racking taking them to the vet when they're older. I hate it. Give her some extra snuggles from all of us.
  • @MrsWiggleWaggle sending you prayers for your kitty. All fur kids are important parts of our lives. I hope she's doing ok. Keep us posted.

@VanessaE19 I'm sorry for your worries. Sending you positive vibes and prayers that he will be there.

    Thanks!!
  • @mrswigglewaggle hope kitty is on the mend. Cats are notorious for inexplicable medical stuff that costs a bunch of money and then just goes away. When we first got Buster he had some blood in his stool. Vet was like, try some oral stomach meds and different food. (That was like $350 later). We had to essentially swaddle the cat (did NOT go well) go force feed him meds and it ended up just going away. Fur babies!

Hey guys, here's my newest FTM anxieties: LO doesn't seem to respond to music and didn't do much with the "flashlight" trick, so of course now I have a ridiculous fear that baby is blind or deaf. I wish she were here already so these unknowns would go away!

my kid doesn't respond to those either.

Totally feeling you on the blind thing! You've reminded me that I wanted to try it again a few weeks later from when I did last. I'll update if anything crazy happens.

I must confess that money has been my worry for the entire pregnancy... We have none. My husband and I packed up and moved from Texas to Northern Virginia shortly after having DS in August of 2013. We moved because my husband hates Texas and we wanted to move closer to his family who lives in NY. He had a job lined up. Since I had just given birth we decided we could manage me staying at home until the beginning of 2014. I started looking for a job in the fall of 2013 and never found one. I've applied to a ton of jobs and had quite a few interviews but am still unemployed. We live close to DC which is an expensive place to live.
Our savings is completely gone and we barely make it paycheck to paycheck. This pregnancy was an unplanned surprise. We really are excited to add this little girl to our family but it will be very difficult. One upside is that my husband (who is a teacher) was just offered a position in the public school system. This means a $13k per year raise which will mean so much for my family!!! But this increase won't happen until September. His paychecks from his current job will continue through July which means we'll have $0 income for August. Stressing out and worrying like crazy!!
I will be on the job search again a few weeks after our baby girl arrives on June 1st. I hope I can find one that starts in August!!

Are you looking for a VERY PARTICULAR type of job, or just like a part-timer? It seems like ANYTHING at this point will help you guys out a lot--and while I haven't had to search for a job in a long time (thankfully), I know that retailers like Target, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens are ALWAYS hiring and looking for good people. My first job out of college was management at Target and we were ALWAYS hiring. Yeah--it's retail hours, but it sounds like anything will help at this point. Are you trying to get full-time employment in your field or just whatever at this point? Good luck to you--you'll get something!

Baby #1 for Allie and Mike!

  • @TheEA I hope things get better for you. We are in the same boat. Savings at an all time low and working while pregnant or a new mother in my field is quite a ridiculous thing. I'm a nail technician (which means no hourly pay and a chance I'd make less than min wage). I'm hoping some way some how the husband and I can workout me working from home when our 2nd child arrives (6/08). DH works at a uniform warehouse and is making only $100 more a week than before but we're barely scraping by. If it wasn't for DH's helpful family and the fact I'm having another little boy, I don't know what we'd do.
  • @TheEA - can your H do summer school? Our district is still getting things organized and teachers hired for that. And with the thought of helping you and not making you more stressed, are you sure his first check will be in September? My district's first check isn't until October (because you have to work September before you get paid for it) and we're only paid monthly. Good luck, girl, financial stress is terrible. Are you hoping to breastfeed and cloth diaper? Big savings!
  • @TheEA
I'm right there with you on money. I just graduated with my teaching certification and tried looking for jobs, but people aren't exactly stoked about hiring a super pregnant chick who will miss school starting because of maternity leave. We've decided to wait a little while and I will go back to subbing, but the couple of months in between are stressing me out. Hub makes good money, especially since we live in a very inexpensive city in Texas, which is already pretty inexpensive in comparison. Money just freaks me out. I am not good at not having a "safety net".

    Thanks ladies!
My field, the wholesale commercial greenhouse industry, is kind of obscure so I'm looking for almost anything... However we cannot afford to pay for daycare if it's only part time or pays less than 32k. I briefly worked in retail last year. It was supposed to be part time evenings and weekends but they would only schedule my training for during the week. They promised me I would only need training hours for a couple of weeks... Long story short we spent a ton of $$ on daycare while I was training. Once I was trained, the work schedule that they promised never happened. I would have to remind them every week that I couldn't work during the day unless I had full time hours. They would schedule me for shifts during daytime hours anyway and then only have me work one shift on the weekends. I had to quit because my wages basically just covered daycare.
My husband is taking classes this summer towards his education administration masters so he won't be able to teach summer school.
Both of our parents have helped us out more than we would like. I'm so grateful for their help but it's gotten to a point where I'm starting to feel like a burden.
I am bound and determined to find a job as quickly as possible after I have this baby girl. I do have a small possibility of a job that should start in August or September. It would be perfect if I get it... Close commute (traffic in our area is a nightmare as in it can easily take over an hour to drive just 10 miles), good pay, and onsite daycare! Fingers crossed that either I get that job or something else that will let us relax and not have to worry about money any more!

Best of luck with your job possibility! I believe that everything works out for the best one way or another - I bet you'll get it, but if not, something better will come along! :)

New stress added today while DH, two dogs, the cat, and my fat butt were crammed into our closet of a laundry room sheltering from a freaking tornado and flood fiesta. We live in Waco, Texas which has had a rough May already, can we not add insane weather to the mix? Normally we see one or two warnings a year that never amount to a whole lot but just today we had multiple touch down and we were trapped in our neighborhood due to flooding. I hope this is it for this season, because I DO NOT want to be rushing to the hospital in this mess.

Edit: Thank you note writing ate my ability to spell.

  • Here in Texas too on the east side! Nasty storm right now I'm home alone with the lights out and the whole house is lighting up from the Lightning. Already ready to go under the stairs if we get the tornado warning! The last few weeks have been crazy

  • I'm just now starting to put together baby gear and am waiting for our crib and dresser to be delivered today. Hubby has a huge sales demo out of town on Wed. So we're getting started putting things together Wednesday and Thursday.

I'm worried that my swelling, intense sudden weight gain, headaches, etc are signs of preeclampsia and that Thursday morning, at my 37 week appt, doc will order us to the hospital, and our house isn't ready for baby yet! :-S
  • @Westypet if Tylenol does not relieve your headache please call your doctor. If you see any spots or have any blurry vision please call your doctor. Preeclampsia is super serious and it's better to be safe than sorry and wait until Thursday.
