Stupid question about water breaking.

I know that only ~12% of people have their water break before labor starts. But I'm a bit worried I won't know when labor actually starts...since I've apparently been having real contractions with cervical change for ~2 weeks. Anyway my question: will it be a lot? Will it ruin my mattress/couch/etc? I guess I'm just paranoid bc I'm sleeping in a call room at work and that would be mortifying.

Re: Stupid question about water breaking.

  • I think it can be, yes. But, you can't really do anything about it, so I wouldn't stress too much! Easier said than done, I know. I guess just hope you're in that 88%! (My mom's water broke before her first three out of four births, so I've made my peace with the possibility.)

  • My water broke with DD1 when I rolled over in the middle of the night. We had a mattress protector on the mattress, so it was fine and I sat on two or three towels in the car on the way to the hospital without ruining the seat. I did however, ruin the pants I was wearing. I worried with DD2 that I wouldn't know for sure if I was in labor or not since it was so obvious the 1st go 'round, but there was no denying it when the real deal happened even though my water didn't break.
  • I was sitting on the toilet when my water broke with DD and it was a big gush that didn't stop. It didn't ruin the clothes I wore to the hospital and I seriously left puddles all the way to the elevator and down the hall. :)
  • My water broke with DS just after getting into bed. Felt a weird pop, stood up, and yes there was a gush. Apparently though it depends on where exactly the break is... If it's up top it can be more of a trickle. Fun fact that I did not know the first time around is that your water just keeps replenishing and coming out the whole time. If you're worried, have some pads ready to go. We did throw away the pants, underpants and towels that were used.

I was having a nap and woke up in labour. For some odd reason, I knew my Water was about to break (I've always had a 6th sense of exactly when my period is about to start too). Screamed for my husband to come help me and as soon as I got off the carpet and onto the bathroom tile it gushed out of me. I changed my clothes and somehow in the 1 hour drive to the hospital I never leaked onto the seat. When I got into my room I started periodically gushing again.
  • It can be a gush or a slight trickle .. making it not so obvious. If it's not apparent and you think it may be amniotic fluid leaking, the hospital has a special test and it will determine whether or not you are ruptured
  • It was a gush .. And yes it was enough to ruin a mattress or whatever. O.o

OK well then I have a related question - should we go out and buy a waterproof mattress protector, just in case? Maybe so, huh?

It couldn't hurt. ;) Mine gushed immediately but I literally jumped up, so my bed didn't get terribly wet.

I've been considering this anyhow, thinking that the baby will be in bed with me a lot during night time breastfeeding, and there is potential for spit up and blow outs.

This is so interesting to read everyone's experiences! With DS, my water didn't break until I was in the delivery room and I had a super fast labor. No one could actually tell when it broke, we just knew there was no fluid before my body was pushing. Crazy how different we will all experience the same event!

Mine broke in a gush with my oldest child and the second baby it trickled out only during contractions...but I definitely knew I was in labor--the real-deal kind--both times ;)

  • At my baby class last Saturday she recommended a mattress protector especially if you have a nice fancy mattress. So im going to order one off amazon lol.
  • Ok I'm sufficiently convinced - off to amazon.com!

This is a really good point. I didn't need it for my water breaking.. But I did for breastmilk leaking and blow outs!
  • This is my first pregnancy but I definitely bought a mattress protector. We figured if my water didn't break in bed the baby would spend a lot of time on our bed while nursing at night or changing diapers sometimes. So it was worth the money for us for sure, especially since we bought a new bed right at the beginning of the pregnancy. I was actually surprised how cheap the protectors were for a king size bed. Got to love amazon.
  • lol DH was making a run to walmart for an extra fan for me and i asked him to get a waterproof mattress cover too. They were only $20 there for a queen sized one. Not too shabby
  • The whole mattress protector thing is cracking me up! Don't get me wrong, I totally understand why people are getting them, I just keep having visions of husband/wife rolling over in bed (not to mention during "special time!"), loud crinkles, feeling like a potty-training toddler, etc! :P
I think I'm just gonna live on the wild side and gamble....I didn't go into labor naturally with DD, and when they did break my water finally at the hospital, there was almost nothing. I then had to be pumped with fluids during labor, so then when she came out, it was like a firehouse after her!
  • My sister swears by her mattress protector still as the LOs crawl into the bed and will wet the bed.

My friend threw on a depends and just kept cleaning up the house and labored at home until she was ready to
    Transition to hospital.
  • My water broke at 38w6d while perusing the baby section at walmart. It was enough that I though I may have peed myself, but it was not a gush by any means. I went to the washroom to check, but was still not convinced. I called L&D when I got home and went in to get checked an hour or so later. There were a few tiny "gushes" on the way to the hospital, but nothing worthy of a mattress cover. It was, in fact, my water.

All that being said, I'll still be risking it. What are the odds of it happenig again? Haha

  • I'm probably the only one who wants their water to break at home, lol. In my previous pregnancies, my dr had to break my water at the hospital, and my last pregnancy it actually broke on its own at the hospital right before my daughter was born. This is definitely my last pregnancy so I am hoping it breaks on its own at home. Even though my doctor is trying to avoid me going into labor on my own.
  • Is it strange that I hope my water breaks?? My Dr had to do it before and it was awful. My poor granny had never seen it done. She just kept saying "It was so much water". It didnt hurt bad but it wasn't pleasant. I'm hoping for a trickle.
  • I think I'll just be sporting depends protective panties until I'm safely at the hospital... I would like to avoid my water breaking at work or anywhere public or even at home without some added protection!

  • Surprisingly our mattress protector is super quiet. I forget its even there. No crinkling or noises, and didn't change the feel of the mattress. I was worried about that as well.
  • My water broke with my first when I was walking with my mom it was a total gush thank goodness I had a pad because my mom mademe walk back to the car to get my labor moving along I'm now 35w3d and haven't really thought about this matter much till I just started reading and I totally just messaged my husband and told him to put our mattress protector back on the bed lol

Mine broke with a gush for the first 2. Both times it was preceding with a small popping sound. With my first I was sitting in my office at work and had to walk through my law firm and the downtown tower leaving a trail that they had to call cleaning staff to clean. Lol! With my second it happened in the middle of the night and the popping sound woke me up so I asked my husband to grab a bunch of towels because I knew I would gush when I stood up. A mattress protector or even just a few old towels under the fitted sheet where you sleep is a good idea for peace of mind but it can really happen anywhere and most women don't start labour this way :)
  • With both of my previous labors my water broke at the hospital, and this time we're moving and getting a new bed right after baby's EDD so I don't really care about potentially ruining this mattress. I mean, we got it for free from my MIL and it's gotten so uncomfortable I prefer sleeping on the floor most of the time, anyway. I am, however, feeling very afraid of ruining the living room rug (which hubby got me for our last anniversary after years of watching me pine over it), so I guess I should figure out a way to protect that instead....

My water broke at 37 weeks with ny second child and woke up in middle of night to go pee Nd huge gush of water came down then turned the lights on and noticed blood too....if you see blood run to the hospital.
  • Mine broke in the bathtub with my first and it was definitely a big gush but after reading all of these replies, I'm thinking I need to invest in a mattress cover because we just got a new California king bed.. I wonder if walmart has covers that size?
I really enjoy reading other people's experiences
Also @amaleea what does it mean if there is blood in your amniotic fluid? Just curious after reading your post.

Our mattress protector doesn't make a sound or change the feel of our mattress.

We bought our mattress protector at Sam's Club. I vaguely remember them having California King size.

Does anyone else agree that they felt a weird pop? One person said that's what it felt like to her. Every time I pee I sometimes wonder if I'm leaking any fluids because I just sit on the toilet for an extra minute or two because fluids keep coming but I'm not trying to push my urine out. I have about 15 days until my 40 weeks so I'm not trying to induce labor by any kind of wives tales or anything else but I'm just curious as to what it actually feels like from the majority.. I've already lost the infamous mp but it comes back and the contractions I have are very inconsistent. This is like the cruelest joke Mother Nature has for women! My mothers water broke with me on the toilet and she didn't even realize until it stopped. I don't want to be that naive as well.
  • @amaleea @coreysibs when my water broke it was bloody and I rushed to the hospital (pants less, wrapped in a towel, lol) thinking something was wrong. They told me it was totally normal to have some blood come out with the water. I sat in the hospital for 14 hours before being induced with pitocin due to no progress. Definitely wish I would have stayed home!

We got our king size mattress protector on Amazon for less than $40. It doesn't feel or sound any differently - in fact I didn't even know my husband put it on when he did. I wish we got it sooner. I nursed our son and my boobs would leak on the bed. Our son's bottles and sippy cups would leak when he'd crawl into bed with us and he's had a few diapers leak when we've let him nap or sleep in our bed.

My water broke when I went to the bathroom, though. One gush on the toilet, then intense contractions and Niagara Falls within 5 mins and the whole way to the hospital. I also wish we'd kept at least a towel in the car. It wouldn't have caught everything, but it would've helped.

Also, no popping nose when it happened to me. More like the feeling of a heavy period or accidentally peeing lol

I didn't know what happened at the time. It was clear so I didn't see anything weird in the toilet, but it seemed almost slimy when I wiped. 5 minutes later I couldn't walk or talk through the contractions. My labor went from 0 to 10 really quickly. He was at a rim within 20 mins.
