blighted ovum ***update

7 weeks today, had u/s done and all they saw was the yolk sac. They tested my blood today and I have to go back on Wednesday so they can see if levels are rising or not. She told me I will most likely miscarry in the next week and if not they will give me medicine.
Has anyone gone through this? Both of my previous pregnancies we're completely healthy. I read a blog about a woman who was told the same thing and now she has a healthy baby....she refused any meds. It's just hard for me to believe considering I've been so nauseas.

  • I had a blighted ovum twice last year. Once in April and the other in September. Also had a chemical pregnancy in February. It is rough. Best wishes that everything turns out alright.

    Rainbow baby EDD 12/19/15
  • I actually just got diagnosed with a BO about 4 weeks ago. The sac quit growing at 5 weeks. I've been to two ultrasounds with still only seeing the gestational sac. My levels are finally dropping as of Friday. I have refused all meds to help the miscarriage along, so that I have no doubts. I started spotting this morning. This will be my first miscarriage as my other two pregnancies have been healthy. I know how frustrating and terrifying the wait is, but best wishes to you!
  • We went through that with our last pregnancy. They couldn't tell me any reason why it happened, just that it happens sometimes. I'll keep you in my thoughts and hope that maybe your dates are off.
  • I am so sorry that you're going through this! I agree with the advice that you should see what happens to make sure that your levels are actually dropping. A loss is not something that is easy to get over, but hopefully if this doesn't go your way, you will get your rainbows baby soon... But I am very much praying that it will go your way! (((Hugs)))
  • Thanks for all the kind wishes. I really appreciate it. This is just such a new feeling to me so it's kind of hard to deal with. Not knowing is just so hard. If my levels don't increase I think I will wait and miscarry naturally as apposed to taking a medicine "to take care of it" I will know by Thursday about levels. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again for everyone who took the time to respond.

I had a BO in Dec. I had found out the sac quit growing at 6wks and it took my body until week 12 to miscarry natural. Then after a week of bleeding I had to have a D&C. I pray your situation is different and maybe dates are just off.
  • I had basically the same thing happen as LamarBreanna. Though unfortunately my body wasn't able to complete the process so I ended up needing a d&c.
  • I had a blighted ovum the first time I was pregnant. Basically, your body knows something is not right (probably an extra chromosome) and ends the pregnancy as soon as it occurs. Unfortunately, the rest of your body isn't on board with the news and continues on with the pregnancy, including rising hormone levels (for a little while) and all of the delightful symptoms, like nausea, except your sac is empty. I do hope that it works out and it was just a glitch but if it is blighted ovum, I wish you healing and know that it happens more than people realize and does not mean you can't go on to have another healthy pregnancy. *hugs*

With my first, they told me I most likely had a BO at 7 weeks. Two weeks later, they saw her. She is a happy, healthy 3 year old now!

  • I'm sorry sweetie. Hang in there. I had a blighted ovam last year and ended up having to have a d&c. I was devastated. We have been trying since then and I think I had a chemical pregnancy a few months (took a test, got a faint positive then started bleeding went to er and they said levels were so low, it was a very early miscarriage). Pregnant again now 7 weeks 2 days and feeling it. Though I'm still nervous. I don't go to the dr. Till next week. Keep your head up, everything could be ok with you. I remember reading stories during mine of them being misdiagnosed quite a bit.
  • I had what they believe were 2 empty sacs at 6w5d but they tested levels and rising well so believed to be a good healthy pregnancy. It's hard to wait but I will be 9 weeks tomorrow and still don't have an appointment until next Thursday. All you can do is hope and pray and keep believing that everything is ok or you will drive yourself crazy.

I had one of these last summer . I was tested at 6 1/2w and again at 8. They said the sac was still empty and had actually shrunk. It had stopped growing at about 6 weeks. I had a d&c. It was very difficult but you will get through. God has a plan for you!
  • I also have had a BO a few years ago. I just never heard of anything like that before so I didn't receive it at first. My uterus continued to grow as did the sac which later caused out of control bleeding and meant emergancy surgery to save my life. Please listen to your doctors on their advice and consider all the options. God be with you, my friend!
  • Great news!!

I had a horrible BO almost identical...absolutely nothing pretty about trying to bleed out while out to dinner. It ended in an emergency D&C in the ER wide awake with only morphine on board. Blah. Take care and carefully consider your options! Prayers.

  • Hopefully the good news just keeps coming!

  • Good luck hopefully we both get good news
  • Going in for my next u/s on Monday. I'm so nervous. I'll be 9w by then so we should get an answer. It feels like it could be the best day or the worst day.
I have a question that I've been thinking about a lot, not sure if anyone will be able to answer but thought I'd give it a shot...
So at 7w they couldn't see a baby, all they saw was the yolk sac. I haven't had any bleeding. If the baby didn't show and I haven't miscarried what happend to the baby? I'm so confused, that's probably a question for my dr but I was just thinking of it yesterday....

A blighted ovum never develops a fetal pole. Hopefully when you go back you will have a pole!!!

OK that makes sense. The whole thing is so weird to me.
Thanks for helping to clear that up!

Maybe this has been covered already but is it possible you're not as far along as you think?

If I'm off it could only be a day or two. Also during my 7w u/s she said it measured 7w and my hcg levels are on par with that as well.

Oh ok. I ask because they thought I was further along than I was with DS and told me it wasn't a viable pregnancy (sac was measuring close to 7 weeks and my levels were really high indicating I was around that far along too)... I went to a different doctor for a second opinion and they confirmed I was actually only 5 weeks 6 days and found a heart beat.

Hopefully you have a good outcome - will be thinking of you!
  • Will be praying for you <3

Oh wow! I am hoping for a miracle right now. If they don't find baby on monday then I will go for a second opinion for sure.
  • @TeraLamp im going for my next ultrasound Monday too, nervous reck feel free to PM me if u want to vent ;)
  • I actually was diagnosed with BO and I was supposed to be 8+5 when I went in for my first U/S and when I got there and had the U/S I was measured at 6+3.
My doc said that sometimes this can happens because you didn't ovulate when you thoght you did or because of a chromosomal as abnormality that it was'nt growing at a "normal" rate.
So being a week or two behind is common enough which is why they have you go to lab to get you levels checked. They also schedule you 2-3 weeks in a row to monitor your gestational sac, embryo and cervix.
I am very happy that your levels are going up,praying for a sticky pregnancy and hoping that your baby will show up!
  • Thinking of you and wishing you the best. Update us Monday. I am on the same boat sort of. Empty sac but my transvaginal US are hard to see (tilted uterus and overweight). Have my follow up Tues and HCG levels also rising. Let hope it's good news for both of us! I will be 7 weeks 6 days on Tuesday and I know because went through IUI and working with and RE.
  • Both of you make sure to update us today!! Praying for good news :)
