So here's my question!  I bought nail clippers, and have also heard about mom's just biting their LO's nails off, but the nurse at my hospital said that there's a membrane attached the the nail so you're not supposed to trim them until they break off naturally.  I don't want to question the medicine behind that, but has anyone had bad experiences trimming newborn's nails as a result of this membrane?

I've heard this too. The nurses at my childbirth class said that if the nails are stupid long its better to file them down.

My question - related to the laundry thread... Of course I plan on washing all my blankets, sheets, clothes... Anything touching baby. But should I also wash the mattress protector? It IS washable, but its going to be underneath a sheet and not on the skin?

Also, since the ewok will be sleeping in the pack n play for a while, is the thin(ish) pad that came with it enough? Or should I buy a mattress specifically for the pack n play, too? (And thus, a mattress protector for THAT)

For our pack n play we're not getting a mattress to go on top of the pad, but I did get a waterproof pad that lies on top of the pad and sheets. I figured that would be easier to clean than the pack'n'play pad itself.

  • Has anyone had tummy issues with crawfish? I went to a crawfish boil a few weeks ago and it did not sit well with me. A reaction I have never had eating them before. I am going to another one tomorrow and hoping the same thing doesn't happen again...  Maybe baby doesn't like them  :(

Watching my 4 month old nephew everyday along With my own kids is seriously taking a toll on me. Not to mention my sister only gives me 150 every two weeks. If that. For an infant. AND my smart mouthed 9 year old nephew. I swear if this kid comes over with an attitude after school I'll wash his mouth out. He calls me fatty and eats all my sons snacks and drinks his juice, and she never brings him anything. The baby just wants to be held all day and yea he's cute and I love him to death but I'm already carrying around 60 extra pounds. My bump takes up my lap and I'm so exhausted just from breathing I have no energy to function like a normal adult. I really want to tell her to shove it bc omg I am to my breaking point. I somehow manage to hold me tongue and just nod every Friday when she's supposed to pay me and puts it off. when I have this baby she is going to have to quit her job and wants to start keeping kids. I hate to say it but she's going to get exactly what's she's giving. I am understanding and she's family but getting up at 7 am for practically nothing after not sleeping well all night is getting old. Ugh rant over.

Edited for question: would you tell her to find someone else??

They told my sister the same thing. I'm curious to see what my hospital says

I would have a talk with her, outlining exactly what is bothering you and tell her that something has to change. I'd be most concerned about your nephew's disrespectful attitude, and I'd let her know that if that doesn't change in x amount of time, you will no longer be able to watch him.

ETA I also feel that she's taking advantage of you by paying only $150 every two weeks and it would be reasonable to tell her that, with your new baby coming soon, you'll need that to increase, but that could be a very awkward conversation and you need to decide if it's worth the potential consequences.
I just keep telling myself It'll be over soon. Bad part is she knows how he talks to me. And before I had to have my fur baby put to sleep, he would kick him and be mean to him. I'm going to snap on him one day I'm afraid. She's told me to take care of the situation (spanking or whatever I wish), but I'm not about to wrestle him. He's 100 pounds easy and comes up to my neck. I'm 8 months pregnant. No way.
  • @SammeMotley yes. That's not enough money for all that stress. I hate 9 year olds. Have you told your sister what a jerk her son is? I would probably make her feel bad about her parenting by sharing with her how he treats adults and family but that's just me, you probably have more tact than me.

You're so right. It's not enough money. We live paycheck to paycheck and when she doesn't pay it messes up my account. I really want to tell her the business, but I selfishly need her watch DS while I'm in the hospital. AND I have to pay her 60$ a day. I wanna say uh put it on my tab.

    We deliver 6-7 a day.

Our educator at the hospital suggested a nail file for the first few weeks. Also said bare hands better for nursing than mittens.I did buy nail clippers for later but packing the nail file for the hospital bag!

We plan on using the pack and play as the crib for a few months so I did go and buy this mattress and it fits perfectly: https://www.amazon.com/Dream-On-MeFoam-Graco-Mattress/dp/B006Z2BZBU

I also bought a mattress protector to keep leaks at bay. It's too big because I must have misread the size but I threw it on anyway since it was cheap enough. I washed it beforehand since I was washing other items anyway!
  • It is really just enough to get groceries for a week. If that. I started out thinking I would just help her for a few weeks and wasn't worried about money but it's become a nightmare. She surprisingly paid me today and apologized for being late so many times. I will for sure bring up the $60/ day later. I just can't stand drama especially in my family. It would be nice to be able to relax and enjoy DS before DD gets here. But I keep trying to remind myself I'm being helpful and it'll come back to me. I just wish she'd listen when I tell her I'm gonna lose it on her kid.
  • Lost my mucus plug this morning...don't worry I didn't take a picture lol. I am starting to get nervous. I read that just cause you lose it it could still be like 2 weeks away from labor. I just wanna know if anyone else has experienced this?

I've been losing pieces for a month. It basically means nothing. :/
  • Here's a question, women who are breech, how did you find out? I asked my doc if she knew my baby's position at my 32 week check up and she said she still couldn't tell by feeling around. I have no more ultrasounds scheduled so I'm just curious if that's how you found out
  • @Mommaswizz my doc checked me last appointment and said she could feel DD's head. I'm guessing that's how.

My doctor could eventually feel the head down low. She wasn't completely sure though, so she grabbed an ultrasound machine and looked real quick. I wasn't schedule to have a ultrasound or anything, she just grabbed one from the hallway, and put it up for a few seconds to confirm that the head was down.

  • When they check your cervix and it starts to open, they feel for the sutures to verify baby is head down
  • Thank you @SammeMotley @aliciac2008 and @HayesRN13 !! I'm hoping at Monday's 34 week check up they'll be able to tell. I'd be nervous to go into labor blindly having no idea if my baby was in position but I guess the docs would figure it out by then.
  • @Mommaswizz I had a u.s. because I'm measuring behind. Turns out a transverse lying baby can throw off measurement.
  • Thank you @ngaines27 ! I think I still secretly wish they'd need to do an ultrasound to get a better look but if they could tell my girl is in the right position, I'd be even happier. I'll keep you guys posted if I get any other insight on Monday. Thank you lovely ladies!
  • I'm so curious where my baby's butt is!! Lol I thought I could find her back a week or so ago but what do I know. I'm such a noob
  • @Mommaswizz my midwife had to confirm all the body parts and then I was able to keep track of them.

I'm having a hard time understanding what contractions feel like. I've been told they feel like period cramps... But obviously way worse but I'm told you'll feel them in your belly & it feels like sharp pains... So I guess my question is how exactly are you supposed to know if it's just cramping or the actual thing? I cramp all the time but I'm sure I'm not in labor. Also does it happen gradually or do you get the sharp pains and your like oh no gotta go!! Sorry for how stupid this question probably is, I know everyone experiences contractions differently but I just don't get how exactly you know

I have another question. ...so, I've heard that if it's not your first baby usually you don't drop until right before labor starts. But, for the past week everyone keep telling me I look like I've dropped. I guess it's not really a question per se but I'm wondering if anybody else is experiencing these comments or feel like they've dropped even though it's not a first pregnancy (along with the comments that I won't make it to my due date. Which I don't understand why people seem to think they really know when I will go into labor)

Almost everyone in my family has said I won't make it to June (due date June 2nd) because I'm "carrying SO low" I mean I don't feel like I've dropped any lower, to be honest I think I've carried him "low" my whole pregnancy... But yes I've gotten comments like that as well lol I guess it just goes with people trying to predict when it will happen lol

This may sound crazy (or maybe it's normal?) but I think I'm more nervous about bringing our man home than I am about pushing him out of me.

Are the first few weeks really as tough as they say they are?

I think it's pretty individual. DH and I didn't have any baby experience. The night we got home DD started with the colic and we had no idea what to do. I also had a gallstone attack like a week after she was born and continued to have them weekly until I had my gallbladder out 8 months later. FYI it's apparently a pretty common thing after pregnancy that no one mentioned to me.

FTM here, but from what I understand you will KNOW! Contractions will come regularly and at increasing intervals. And the pain will be way more intense. Think the difference between "ow I'm cramping" and "oh my f'ing god it hurts".
