Pregnancy constipation is in full force. I spent the majority of my morning at work on the toilet contorting my body and rocking back and forth until I finally gave birth to a mediocre poo. I was in the bathroom more than I worked this morning.
The only useful piece of unsolicited advice I've gotten so far is to ask your doctor to recommend a different prenatal if you're constipated. Switching has turned me back into a human being capable of rational thought.

I almost cried at my appt Monday my stomach hurt so bad. I felt like a beached whale and was seriously afraid of winding up in the ER. My doctor said milk of magnesia is ok to take, just to drink plenty of water with it. Bought some on the way home and took it and drank about a gallon of water and ate 3 prunes. Needless to say I feel like a new person. Pregnancy constipation sucks.
After what felt like weeks of blockage, I finally had a decent poop today. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. I was at my office so requesting high fives seemed unprofessional, but boy was I relieved. I had been downing liquids like crazy and upping my fiber intake a bit. Maybe give that a try? Also had some coffee for the first time in weeks (I was having aversions) so that probably helped too.
I did end up in th ER because I was having such severe pains that I was so scared. My doctor told me to take Benefiber. I mix two teaspoons in what I'm drinking 3 times a day. Orange juice, water, grape juice, sweet tea. It doesn't clump and there is no taste what so ever. It's definitely helping. I hope you find something that helps!
I take a probiotic every day (HMF Maternity) and drink Natural Calm Magnesium a few nights a week before bed. 12 weeks in and I haven't missed a day without a BM!
Switched prenatals 3xs and nothing. Drinking a ton of water and veggies is the only thing that has gotten things moving along again for me. It's brutal. I understand your pain. hang in there!
I cannot agree with you more, I just want to freakin poop!!! When I do poop, it's just sad and it takes FOREVER. I am not on prescription pre-natals, my OB/GYN said over-the-counter is fine, so I am on the regular Women's One-A-Day pre-natal. Anyone know if there are known constipation issues with that brand? Should I get a prescription and switch?
I did call my OB/GYN about constipation and they suggested I try Miralax. It really doesn't taste that bad once it is dissolved completely and it is just a stool softener so it is safe. The last dose I took in the evening and I had a semi-decent poop the following afternoon. I took another dose last night so I am hoping for another poop today as well!!
Second the magnesium. I had a friend who used it and said it worked wonders. Check with your doc, but mine recommended colace and that was a winner. I'm 14 weeks and have only had to take it twice. It just helped get things going, no cramps. Also getting out everyday for a walk/run, that really helps.
Being active really helps as well, but the last time I needed to clear out I ate 3 Doritos tacos from Taco Bell. This method worked very well - almost too well. However, the PPs have posted methods that are more medically sound and much saner.
When I was in my 1st trimester pooping was somewhat difficult lol, but fibregel became my best friend. It works and it's ok to take regularly during pregnancy. Its a powder you put into water, you take it twice a day after you've eaten. Rest assured pooping becomes easier in the 2nd trimester
This!! I'm having my first coffee in over 3 months because that has always made me poop before.
I'm having my first coffee in what feels like forever because it's a dreary, rainy morning and the temptation was too strong as I drove by Caribou. I was never all that "regular" before, so I have just been taking the poops and lackthereof as they come... But today is a perfect day for coffee, and if it helps me poop, it's a bonus.
Last pregnancy I had to take Colace plus Miralax and use glycerin suppositories. I even drank 3-4 liters of water a day so fluids wasn't an issue. Pregnancy is rough, try not to strain too much or you might get hemmies (BTDT).
I eat an apple every day and a pear every few days and it helps so much. I also am not a big coffee drinker but once a week I've been having an iced coffee and it helps a lot as well.
I take a magnesium pill every other day and fixed that problem by week 4, so normal now! I can tell when I miss a dose for sure. I also drink a cup of coffee every other day.
the only thing that helps me at this point, is WATER WATER WATER, veggies! Like tomatoes, carrots, (pineapples, sometimes) . But seriously water helps me soooo much!
Omg isn't it the worst!? It used to take me 30 seconds in the bathroom & I was done.... Now I could be in there forever and barely anything! I got nervous for my first tri screening results & that was the most normal bm I've had in months! I find coffee helps too. I think strawberries & carrots have helped more than other fruits & veggies. I haven't tried prunes yet.
I was having the hardest time pooping too and then last weekend I made supper and it had black beans in it. The next day I was able to go and it wasn't a struggle! Black beans always seem to do the trick! So does coffee! Maybe a cup would help to get things moving?
I try to drink enough water but know I am falling short. I did try fiber but without "success." I recently added a probiotic and that has definitely done the trick!
I have tried everything...fibre, prunes, water, coffee, beans etc etc and still nothing. I suffer with IBS so this is not helping at all. My mother thinks I have a baby bump but in fact it is just bloat.
I had the same problem, I was a very regular person before pregnancy that all changed, I was using vitamin products etc, but I've changed to juice plus capsules I have more energy and can poop yay xx
Is it decaf coffee that's helped all you peeps that have suggested coffee? X
My doc said up to 200mg (2 cups coffee)of caffeine per day is okay. I have found that decaf gets things moving just the same. I've been eating a lot of strawberries lately. I don't know if it's bc of that but things are definately improving! I'm 12 weeks now. Do you guys know if constipation improves in the 2nd trimester? Or do we deal w this fun all 9 months?
My after weeks of difficulty with this and terrible pain for days my midwife suggested I take colace (stool softener) daily with my prenatal vitamins, I also switched to a prenatal with no iron and take slow release iron pills on the side (easier on digestive). I have felt wonderful since.

From the moment I held you in my arms, I knew it was meant to be.

I adore her smile,
I cherish her hugs,
I admire her heart.
But most of all,
I love that she is my daughter.
