  Newborns don't have good eyesight. The nipples enlarge and darken so baby can more easily see them. Babies also suckle in the nipple and a lot of the areola (like a shocking amount lol) when they nurse. This helps it to not be so painful. If they just suckle on the nipple it not only hurts REAL bad but they won't massage those sensors under the skin that tell your body to produce more milk.
  
  Knowing the reason behind the changes kind of helps it to not be so bad. I'm blown away by how much our bodies just morph for these little ones, to sustain them.

  Wow, that definitely makes it not so bad. I'll be happy to deal with them growing if it helps reduce the pain and produce more milk. Thanks for the info!

  I've always had "woman" nipples, as my friends have described them, so I haven't noticed much nipple growth or darkening. The change in mine has just been larger breasts with aching nipples haha.
