Does anyone know the arguments against having your infant vaccinated against Hep B? I know some folks are against it, but haven't heard why. Not all vaccines - I've learned about most, but specifically Hep B. Help?
Ask your pediatrician why they recommend it instead of Internet strangers why they put their kids at risk
Agreed. I will say I am delaying it till the first actual doctor's appt rather than having it administered in the hospital this time in the off chance that any reaction to the vaccine might affect getting an initial good start breastfeeding. I don't necessarily think it did with my daughter (we had some initial struggles but ended up just fine), but I just think there has already been enough trauma from the c-section birth that another shot isn't really necessary at that time.
Personally as a pediatric NP I can't tell you one reason why you should delay or not administer the hep B vaccine and a ton of reasons why you should, but ultimately you should talk with your pediatrician and make an informed decision for your child. Ask for legitimate medical evidence to aid your decison not opinionated blogs or "personal testimonies." One thing I will suggest if you are concerned with discomfort associated with vaccines is breastfeeding during the shots. I used to practice this as a nurse administering them and now continue to encourage my patients to ask the nurse if they can try it. I always saw significantly less crying when I administered while baby was latched. They often rarely cried and would fuss then latch back on for comfort. Here is a legitimate medical article showing its been proven to help. Sorry with out my password you can't see the full article but should be able to get the idea from the abstract. Apologize for the lengthy post!
For those concerned that I was going to base medical decisions on what those on this message board had to say, that's not the case. For my birthing class, we've been assigned to research various topics, and DH has not been able to find anyone who can articulate the argument against the Hep B vaccine. I was hoping someone here had maybe read something and could point us in the right direction.
Thank you, @taluthi, for not jumping to conclusions but attempting to answer. I appreciate that!
Maybe because there is not a good articulated argument against hep b?
Fwiw we get bombarded with the these posts About vaccines all the time. People looking for "research" to justify them not vaccinating their kids. You can't blame us.
No problem! I guess try to keep in mind if people didn't make vaccine decisions based on Internet forums, people's stories or personal opinions, there wouldn't be so many people not vaccinating so people get a little touchy! Pediatricians wouldn't recommend not vaccinating (unless there's legitimate health reasons like chemo, immunocompromised patients, etc.) so I think when people ask these questions, people get defensive (this can even my myself sometimes!) and don't want you basing decisions on someone who just decided to delay vaccines or not give them for no legit medical reason! It's great they asked you to research this as I hope you have found that there aren't any medical articles against vaccines, but rather tons in support of them! Good luck!
That is exactly what we've found so far. There are a few folks willing to share their thoughts against it, but they don't really hold up as scholarly, peer-reviewed articles. We don't want to come back with totally lopsided news and call it research, but that might be the case in this argument. Thanks, all!
I am pro doing all the newborn shots and measures the hospitals do. My babes got everything because after research I trust that they do these things to protect your LO. That being said, hep B is a more common vaccine for health care workers that have more of a chance of blood exposure vs a newborn. That is the only reason people validly wonder why they should get it at birth but like I said, just get it. CDC does a lot of research and testing and if they are saying it's best to just get it at birth, I would and did. I know people love to jump all over you for "trusting big companies" but at 4 years of microbiology, immunology, and epidemiology NO ONE will convince me to not protect my children with these genius medical breakthroughs.
Yes, Hep B vaccine for my little guy too! I'm a L&D nurse and the only thing I will be delaying is the baby's first bath. At our hospital the bath is typically done within the first 2 hours of life. (We are working on getting this delayed until the newborn is 24 hours old.) In the meantime, I recommend to my patients that they decline the bath and focus on breast feeding and/or keeping their babies skin-to-skin during these first precious hours. No need to delay any other medical interventions.
Of course! Primary reasons for delaying the initial bath approximately 24 hours include: increased time for baby to be skin-to-skin and/or nursing (which has it's own benefits), allowing time for the newborn's temperature and blood sugar to stabilize, and increasing the absorption of vernix, which is moisturizing and has anti-microbial properties. Take a look online and talk with your OB or your child's pediatrician. There are several articles and publications out there on bath delays and skin-to-skin (sometimes referred to as kangaroo care when used with preterm infants). Most of the good sources I've seen are from the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses or AWHONN for short. Good luck! So glad to hear you're interested in looking into this more!
If you feel "bombarded" with posts of any sort, stop reading or stop responding to them. Simple. Done.
Nope vaccinations are everyone business. It's my public service announcement. It's a public forum where we can all share opinions. My point was that how often we get posts from people asking about reasons against vaccinations not looking for legitimate research to bring back to a class. So shame on me for my assumptions
Sorry I'm not a puppies and rainbows with glitter shooting out of your ass kind of girl [-X
I'm all pro-vaccine as well. Not refuting that, just saying that I'm 100% positive the OP wasn't going to solely base her decision on the responses on people on here. Sometimes it's nice to hear from people with real-life experiences from this- as the L & D Nurse and other medical professionals who happen to be on this board.
I mean I get what your saying about hearing from the L and D nurses and other medical professionals.often times these threads turn into an all out Internet brawl. I am an RN in big city hospital. People like to believe they are smarter than doctors because they have done their "research" and become anti vac against medical advice. But when their kid gets sick they come running to us to find out what's wrong with them. It's ridiculous. It appears this poster was not one of them. But bump search the pervious posts. It is a complete waste of time and nothing productive comes out of it.
What are vaccains? Is that like trying to go on vacation after getting novacaine? That does sound like a bad idea...you may end up drooling without even realizing it. How embarrassing would that be in vacation photos??
@mrsdormane yes they will wipe the baby off while they stimulate baby typically skin to skin on your chest or belly and assign apgar scores (fetal well being). This allows the vernix to absorb into the skin. It is advised that everyone who holds baby during this time with no bathing wash their hands before and after touching baby. I am a L&D nurse too and there are so many benefits of delayed bathing and no real reason to do it within hours of birth!
Why do people on this app just have to be assholes? It's hard to believe you're actually women. Sad!!! Be ladies. If I spelled it wrong, you knew exactly what I was saying right? Have a good day! @Miz_Liz
@destinysmith94 I will never understand this...if you find us to be such assholes, why do you even go on the app or post? Am I supposed to be offended that you don't like me? I am not. What I do find offensive is when people post outright lies about VACCINES such as the one you posted on another post saying if you eat right, you don't need them. As I stated on that post, and I will again, not vaccinating puts innocent lives at risk every single day. I personally don't think it should be legal for you to play Russian roulette with my child (or your own child for that matter)'s life! When my mother was going through chemo an unvaccinated person carrying a disease that they wouldn't have been carrying if they were vaccinated could have killed her!! Babies and young children get diagnosed with cancer and immune disorders every single day. Do you want to look a mother in the eye and tell her sorry the disorder didn't kill her baby, but the disease that your child could have been vaccinated for (but they weren't because you, "eat healthy") killed her baby instead?? Instead of calling us assholes, why don't you do some REAL research (Medical journals....talk to a pediatrician) on the subject and get the truth, then maybe you can thank us for potentially saving a life! You have a good day too, I know I will
For the absolute win!!! If I could find an emoji that bowed down to you I would post it. Perfect response
Guys, I don't think she was offended by the post, I think she was offended for someone pointing out the spelling error.
Well, that is what they have spell check for. And to be offended is one thing, to start swearing and insulting people because of it is another. This is a public forum, is she entitled to post how she wants, when she wants, where she wants? Of course. But so are the rest of us. Unfortunately for her, if you choose to post something as controversial as she did and then you totally botch the spelling as bad as she did, you are going to get replies like she did. If she doesn't like it, then either a.) Don't post such controversial posts or b.) Use spell check (she would still get responses she won't like, but they would be different).
@kedbach I know your all let's be supportive and friends with everyone. But how in gods green earth are we supposed to take a comment like that seriously? What she said is extremely controversial on this bored and just about every other bored. This is not the first time she has randomly posted stuff like this on other boards. And then on top of it she butchered the spelling. I honestly thought I was being nice :-)
And Ms.Liz's post was so on point and hysterical it would have been a crime not to post.
FWIW I make spelling and grammar errors all the time on the bump. Not proud of it but on my phone it is harder to catch. I have been called out on it once or twice. No need to get all butthurt about it.

We're the assholes but yet you're spewing this whole "eat healthy and that will protect your baby" garbage all over the board. Yea...sure. Also, I would never call @Miz_Liz an asshole. She seems to be a very tame member of this board and has A shit more patience than I do.
@krp1508 you really should do more lurking. Not trying to be mean, but you seem to be very "puppies and rainbows" and while that is commendable in most cases you will start to see a trend around here. When someone doesn't respond to the OP the way they want we are all "bitches that make our husbands miserable" and blah blah
My goodness people, who cares anyway? Stop analyzing what people say- especially me, as I simply clarified a subject- not refuting anyone!
Well when you click "love it" on a post where someone is calling other women on here assholes, people are going to assume you have the same viewpoint. If you feel the need to defend someone who posts the types of things she does and reacts the way she does, people are going to respond not only to her, but to you - that is how forums work. Vaccines are a very hot button topic for many, myself included. There are certain posts I just laugh, roll my eyes at, and move on, but when someone starts spewing misinformation about something that can literally be deadly, I can't...I just can't.

I agree with you, which is why I'm confused as to why you're directly speaking to me. I'm pro-vaccine and pro-correct grammar as well, but I can still agree with someone when they say people on these forums are sometimes way too attacking (especially when what they're attacking has no bearing on the original subject). That is all, move on.

Oh well. @Miz_Liz I still heart you even though they call you names
I heart you too - and trust me, I've been called far worse
