Nicknames for the third?

So we found out yesterday we're having a boy, and are going to name it after my husband, who is a junior already. So since this baby will be the third, does anyone know of any nicknames traditionally used for the 3rd? Such as Tripp or Trey? I couldn't think of any others!!!

Re: Nicknames for the third?

  • Haha not quite sure why they are commonly used for the 3rd either - it's just what I've read/seen people do!

  • But yes, I'm assuming a play on the word triple or the number.
  • Congratulations on your boy.  I personally really dislike Tripp and Tre as nicknames for III.  You should just use a variation of the real name or the full name.

  • Forgive me but, huh? How is Tripp or Trey a 3rd nickname? As in like triplet or the number tre?

    Exactly.

  • It doesn't have to be anything I was more just curious if anyone heard of any other traditional nicknames. Thanks for the feedback though! :)

  • My friend's husband is a third.  He's been known as Tres his whole life. (Pronounced like Trace)

  • Trey's good. We know a Trey and I actually really like that name. Never even knew he was a III until much later.

Yes. It's the most common nickname for a 3rd out there. How did you not know this?

Trip, Tripp, Tre, Trey are the most common but a lot of people go by a nickname of the actual name. What's the name?

And this is why we're not having a 3rd. I told my husband is we had a 3rd, I was calling him 3 over Trey or Trip.
  • I hear Tripp and Tre all the time, can't believe some have never heard of them. I've also heard Chip, Kip and IVey for juniors
  • Every third I know goes by Tre as a nn.

  • DH's nn is Trey and he's a 3rd. Same thing with a guy I worked with. He went by Trey until he grew up and moved out into the "real world" then started going by his first name.

My cousin thinks its funny to call him cuatro. But if we were to have girl, we were going to name her Ivy in essence of having a "fourth". DH doesn't want a real 4th tho lol. He hates his full name.

  • The real name is Geoffrey. When the whole family is together, my FIL goes by Geoff, and my husband Geoffrey - so just seeing if we could mix it up :)
  • The way DH family also batted that is Big Mark and Little Mark and grandpa was just Paw. So maybe little Geoff? Or G. My step dad and his dad have the same name and that was their solution, (George and G). *shrug* HTH
  • My nephew is a 3rd and his grandfather and father both go by Tim, then my nephew is Timmy. But I work for a family and their nephew is a third and is called Tripp. I think it's cute

  • Haha, I think we have a winner with "the turd".
  • And "Paw" is super cute for a grandpa by the way! I love that!
  • My SIL has a Tre.  It was either that or be known as Baby Derric his whole life.  I love Tripp, though!  Different, and doesn't have to be seen as "The Third."

  • My DH is Tripp (the 3rd) and my DS is the 4th- he wasn't going to be another Larry so he goes by their middle name- Zane. We didn't come up with another nickname that worked and I liked Zane and it fits! Some people will defiantly have and express their opinions to you about the tradition and how it isn't nescessary but personally it's amazing to see all 4 of them together!! And #1 is quite proud!!

  • My family nicknamed my uncle, Chip. As in, Chip off of the old block. I've heard of Trey and Tripp as nn's for the 3rd. It's hard to call someone baby Joey or little Joey when they're 30. However, my Pap's nn was Baby Joe. It's really funny now that he's 80.
