have any of you guys refuse a pap smear? I've never had one done before and I'm kinda scared to have one done while im pregnant. Is there anyway they would let me get one after the baby is born?
I had my first Pap smear 4 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child. You definitely need to have it done. It's not scary, it's not going to harm you or your baby, but it will check for cervical cancer. I had a friend refuse a Pap smear until after her baby was born and she found out that she had cervical cancer 6 weeks after giving birth! Now THAT'S scary. Definitely get it done.
@katelyn00rider tell your obgyn about your fear of the Pap smear. They have pediatric speculum which is the smallest size you can use. He or she will also move according to your desired pace. Just be very open to express what is comfortable and what isn't.(:
My doctor was super understanding of my situation and even fears and she worked very well according to my needs. You aren't the first whose walked in fearful(:
Ps. Way to go for being brave enough to keep your baby and go through with this pregnancy. It speaks a lot about your bravery and maturity. I have a lot of respect for you. Being pregnant isn't easy, but know you aren't alone alright?(:
If you've never had a pap, you absolutely should have this done. It's standard during pregnancy and will not harm the baby. You may however have spotting afterwards, but this is completely normal and again no harm to the baby.
You really should have one done, especially since you've never had one before. You should get them done every year or at least every two years, because they also check for cervical cancer.
It's not harmful to have a Pap smear during pregnancy. And it's important to have one done to check for certain diseases/conditions that you may be unaware of that could harm the baby.
Well the thing is.... please don't judge me but I'm only 14 going on 15... Ik I'm in for a lot but in the end it's worth it. I'm going to keep the baby and my family is here to help me out with everything and so is the baby's dad
No judgments, but taking care of yourself is one of the most important things you can do for your baby. I'm glad to hear you have a great support system.
You won't be judged for your age here. My mother had me when she was a teenager, and she is the best mom anyone could ever ask for. Just be sure to take care of yourself! Happy to hear you have a good support system.
My sister-in-law had a baby her freshman year of college (much older than you by years but she was very sheltered). She has a great support system in her family and his family has been involved (just not him so much). She's about to graduate from Mississippi State University and go on to a four year chiropractic school. Point is, you've got this and you can be a great mom and still reach any dreams you have. It may take extra work, but it possible to do anything you set your mind to do!

I am 20. My doctor told me to wait to have my Pap smear until I turn 21, after the baby is Born. 21 is the normal age to get one. I think you should talk to your doctor in depth about it, but I you seriously do not want one, wait.

This is the positivity and love I wish I saw more of on the bump forums. Seriously! Thank you for that refreshment.

That doesn't seem right. If you're sexually active you need a pap. You're now worrying about your health and the baby's.

I have talked to several doctors about it. Most of them agree that they usually wait until 21 (if the patient has no history of cervical cancer in the family) to do a pap smear for several reasons. 1. Cervical cancer is super rare in women under 21 even while sexually active. When you are twenty one the chances go way up for finding something. 2. Doing Pap smear before 21 can cause other problems that is easily avoided by waiting until the right age. 3. Doing a Pap smear too often can be harmful and make problems pop up that would usually go away by themselves.
I also researched it on google, and found similar guidelines.

Yes, 21 is the recommended age to have your first pap smear - IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN SEXUALLY ACTIVE. Having one before your baby is born is important because this is how they test for chlamydia and gonorrhea (both of which women can have without symptoms) and both can be harmful to baby if not treated before delivery. They also check for cervical cancer. So please, for your health an baby's health, just have it done.

Have you not heard of HPV? If she's 14 and pregnant then she wasn't using protection. HPV is the number one cause of cervical cancer and you wouldn't have a family history with a STD.

Agreed. There are lots of things that need to be dertmined for your health and the health of the baby.
@LeannAllen Also it's by no means rainbows and butterflies. I said with hard work and I mean that. There are lots of sleepless nights split between studying and a cranky toddler. There is peanut butter and jelly smeared all over the inside of her car. There is a lot of money spent on gas back and forth to her parent's house if the sitter can't take her daughter, and doctor bills and diapers and special formula for acid reflux... Kids are hard; babies are hard.

Lol I was totally not saying it was all happy. I was by even referring to what you were saying so much as how you said it. I was simply appreciating you using kind words instead of cutting down.

As is the solution to 99% of the questions that come up here on the bump, the OP needs to have an open discussion with their doctor. Ask as many questions as you can and let them know your concerns with the pap. (Pain? Scared they'll find something? Worried it will hurt the baby?) ASK all the questions.
To be fair, my doctor and I had this discussion about younger women not getting their paps until later on. His argument was that women test positive for HPV all the time and frequently the HPV disappears without causing any problems but creates fear. As a result, many doctors become too quick to perform a LEEP or cone biopsy where one may not be needed and this can cause complications down the road, particularly with pregnancy. I'm torn - because what if it IS the version of HPV that needs to be and can easily be treated if caught soon enough.
I have had paps yearly since I was 17. (Mainly to get my birth control refilled) It was a bit uncomfortable at first but it's quick and worth having done. Your doctor will probably give you a pelvic exam anyways at your first appointment. Its really not that bad. I would take your doctor's advice if they recommend having it done (I'm guessing they will) I would do it.

Iv had THREE doctors tell me this. I am 4 months pregnant, my doctor wants to wait another 5 months to do it, that is not grounds for dismissing your doctor?

I gotta say, I agree. I had my first at 18 because that's when I became sexually active and I wasn't using protection. (i was on the shot) Sexual activity would be reason to have one sooner than 21. To let an std go unchecked could be terribly dangerous for no reason.
@katelyn00rider it's not scary and it's a good thing to check, pregnant or not pregnant if you are having sex. I had my first pap at 16 and I was mortified and scared and all of the feels . But it was quick and now I have one every year. Take care of yourself. Also no judgement from me on your age, but do make sure you stay healthy you have a long life to live with your kiddo. I had a good friend get diagnosed with cervical cancer from HPV at 17, she caught it early and is now about to be a mom at 28.
I have to agree that the new guidelines state to start Pap smears at age 21 no matter when you became sexually active. They can still check for gonorrhea and chlamydia by doing a cervical swab. Young women can get HPV, but usually are able to fight off the infection. Cervical cancer is usually a slow growing process.
It's nothing scary or painful you don't even feel it . 2 years ago my Pap smear came back abnormal to the point that I have to do Leep ( mini operation to get rid of abnormal cells) . Doc said it could take years to develop cancer but why to wait when you can do simple presidure . My ob Gyn did it in my first visit I do mine twice a year cause of history . Good luck
I had HPV the pre cancerous type. It definitely scared me, but after one year it went away, all by itself. If you have an abnormal smear they do a biopsy. It didn't hurt at all, I had some mild cramping (period cramps at best) for a few hours after. Very light spotting that day and then every four to 6 months I went in for just a pap until it came back clear. My mom ignored the paps and ended up losing 85% of her cervix. It is scary, but it's totally normal and necessary. Much scarier things will happen later. They put a plastic thing that I call the duckie to hold your vagina open (no further than what a penis would do) and put a large q-tip there and gently wipe your cervix with it. And you're done. Takes 5 minutes max. And it can save yours and babies health. Talk to your doctor! He/she will most likely be understanding and will walk you through whatever decision you make.
Why are you scared to have it done? It is very routine and something that you need to have done. I see no reason why you wouldn't get it done, it poses no risk to the baby. If you have sex while you're pregnant then you can certainly get a pap smear done.
Those saying sexual activity is just cause for a pap, I totally agree. I tested positive for abnormal cells caused by HPV prior to age 21 (19, if memory serves). I had a biopsy done on the affected cells, and they turned out to be precancerous. I got cryotherapy and have had normal paps ever since, but if that had gone unchecked for another two years, it could have been so much worse!
