Re: pap smear

  • As is the solution to 99% of the questions that come up here on the bump, the OP needs to have an open discussion with their doctor. Ask as many questions as you can and let them know your concerns with the pap. (Pain? Scared they'll find something? Worried it will hurt the baby?) ASK all the questions.

To be fair, my doctor and I had this discussion about younger women not getting their paps until later on. His argument was that women test positive for HPV all the time and frequently the HPV disappears without causing any problems but creates fear. As a result, many doctors become too quick to perform a LEEP or cone biopsy where one may not be needed and this can cause complications down the road, particularly with pregnancy. I'm torn - because what if it IS the version of HPV that needs to be and can easily be treated if caught soon enough.

My point - TALK to your doctor.
I agree with this completely. I did have an abnormal pap about 4 years ago and it tested positive for HPV (after having the Gardasil shot). My regular Dr sent me to an OBGYN who did another pap, looked and decided that I would not need to have any additional testing, but to be rechecked in 6 months. Every pap since has come up clear. Now, in that moment I was scared sh**less about an abnormal pap. So I am very consistent on getting them, however have moved to every 2 years instead of 1 because my Dr's have not seen any concern since I am with the same partner.

That being said, @katelyn00rider I would highly recommend getting it done. It is mostly just pressure on your area, not a lot of pain. It can be awkward, but maybe ask your mom to go with you? I would have an open conversation with your Dr about your concerns (or even your mom) and make the decision that is best for you. Having unprotected sex brings about a lot of new tests that will need to be done, especially now that you are pregnant and you want to do everything possible to keep you and baby safe.
