Other than TTC, what do you DO?

So I feel like I'm getting to know a lot of you on here by the way you post. In real life I really like to try guessing what people do for a living based on their personalities. Example: that super bubbly outgoing and totally off the wall new friend? She MUST run her own coffee shop/music lounge or at least do something people oriented like marketing. Nope. Turns out she's a scientist in a lab and spends most of her day crunching numbers alone in a corner somewhere ... but I digress. The point is I'd love to know more about what YOU all do with your lives aside from these boards. However, because it's Friday and I'm tired and I don't feel like guessing, why don't we just share? Obviously you don't have to if you feel that's a bit too much information with the whole internet safety thing and all but if you're game, I'd love to know what you all do for a living and what allows you so much free time to be on these boards!

I work as a Training Specialist at a major video game company. I work as a part of our Continuous Improvement Team and my job is to create training programs and facilitate said programs based on concepts/tools that will help teams improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their processes. I am moving into more of a consulting roll so instead of offering general workshops for the whole company I'm starting to work with intact teams to assess their individual needs and cater our trainings to exactly what they are looking for.

@kyleneum13 Sounds like an interesting position

I'm a mental health therapist for kiddos & adults. I mostly deal with crisis situations. My day is full of ups, downs, and suprises. It's never dull.

@jessfick66 it takes a strong person to do a job like that, especially working with crisis situations. As someone who has seen multiple therapists (for my anxiety) I am truly thankful for people who go into that profession -- and especially those that work with children!

Well I used to be a Pink/beauty category manager for Victoria's Secret. I loved my job but woke up one day like, nope, I'm done. The company majorly takes advantage and our Store Manager was constantly on vacation or out and about and I'm the one everything fell on.

So now I'm doing the full time student thing...getting my Allied Health Sciences degree to become a Sonographer. Aside from school, I work part time as a nanny for an 18-month old. She's the best.

@kyleneum13 my dad does continuous improvement in the automotive industry, so I'm always chatting with him about what he's working on

My education is in Naval Engineering and I used that for a few years working at a shipyard building destroyers for the Navy, super fun!

Now I'm a consultant for the Army working on an optimization tool for base camps, loving it!

I love numbers, patterns, trends, and efficiency... Probably why I love charting my temps

Stay at home mom. Never really a dull moment. I went to the bathroom the other day, for like 5 minutes. Discovered my kids had put about 30 toys in the salt water fish tank... I can't believe the fish and coral are still alive, especially since two of the toys were working toy cameras.

Awesome @27alex. I'm all about making sure you're passionate about what you're doing and as soon as it's more frustrating that it is enjoyable, it's time to find something else you love. I'm glad you've found a path you're excited about!

I did the same thing. I was originally a high school English teacher which I loved. I taught outside of D.C. in an inner city school and it was so fantastic. Then I moved home to the other Washington and taught for three years at a school that I would consider the complete opposite of the first school I was in. Full of entitled kids whose parents thought the teachers were the problem when their kids acted out. I quit and joined the Peace Corps to teach overseas and get that super rewarding feeling again and when I came back it was the middle of a school year and I wasn't even going to consider substitute teaching ... so, I moved into corporate training thinking it would be an interim thing but I fell in love with it and absolutely love what I do now.

Neither do I. I won't say that the pay is why I left (because it wasn't the primary reason) but it definitely didn't help the argument to stay. I think teaching becomes harder and harder every year (especially with the new core curriculum, etc.) and teachers just don't receive the credit they should for the work they put in and the BS they deal with.

X-ray Tech here. Except I am currently in the process of switching my jobs. My parents have an excavation business and I have been doing most shifts there recently. I work in the office with my mom doing payroll, payables & all the other paperwork duties of the business!

Small Liberal Arts College Associate Registrar here. It's currently slow, the calm before the graduation storm about to happen in just under 2 weeks.

I was going to be a teacher, but student teaching did not agree with me - mainly due to the changes in the education system. I didn't want to get into teaching to test students, I wanted them to learn and enjoy it (whenever possible).

Awesome thread @kyleneum13! It's definitely cool to see what everyone does. I am a nurse. I have worked in nursing homes but the last 2 years I have focused on home care. I do pediatric, geriatric and everything in between. I love being a nurse and being able to use my training and education in a patients comfort of their own home.

@embuzz247, uh oh, on the spot. I actually thought I would have done pretty well with yours. I pictured a job that involves working with people but in a motherly/caring way and something with creativity

but my guesses would have been owning a bakery or running an antique shop or something along those lines!

I'm a home based therapist for kids 4-17. It's my fourth job in the field of social work and I finally feel like I have the job in the field I want. Prior social work jobs include foster care case manager, infant mental health, and a school social worker for lower elementary. I loved the last one, but it was hourly and no paycheck over the summer was rough. I'm obsessed with social work... Seriously. I love everything about it. Working with vulnerable people is my passion, and I really feel kids are the most vulnerable. In my current job, I meet with my clients two hours a week in the home or the school and I work with the kids and the parents regarding behavior. Mostly kids with outbursts and teens who cut, but I also have a fire setter, so that's fun. My favorites are the 5-9 year olds because I get to really teach them how to express their feelings and I enjoy that.

Otherwise, I love film and DH and I actually have a podcast where we talk about movies. I hate anything domestic. I enjoy writing.

@27alex - Mix of kind/caring but straightforward and knowledgeable with a tad of sass. If I didn't already know what you did I would have pegged you as the nurse or maybe a social worker or adoption coordinator? Something that works with people but requires a straight forward attitude.

Hmmm ... this is a tough one! I would have guessed something working with people as well but I would have picked something in a more corporate setting -- maybe marketing? not sales - something directly working with people but still creative. Maybe some sort of design (web, instructional, etc)?

I'm in my second to last semester of college, personally. I'll be graduating as an English major in July. In the meantime, though, I'm employed as a freelance consultant for an architect who is promoting his newest book. So I'm working with him to build his platform, consolidate his social media, and manage his speaking engagements. I'm interviewing for my first post-graduation job on Tuesday! If I get it (fingers crossed!), I'll be working as a ghostwriter/biographer for a historical/archival research company. On the side, I'm also trying to get started as a freelance writer, so I can keep doing what I love: working with words!

It's great to know more about you ladies!

This one is definitely tougher since I don't see your posts quite as much but I'll give it a shot. But my gut instinct would be that you were in the housing industry - like a mortgage broker or a realtor or something - but I see you posted something awhile back about looking for your house so I know that's not right.

Maybe something with some creativity throw in like interior design? I don't know why houses are sticking in my brain.

I am also a mental health therapist for children, adolescents, and adults. I specialize in a therapy called DBT for high risk clients. Love my job but it's high stress often as O am on call 24/7 for crisis calls! Great idea for a thread!

@kyleneum13 Thanks for trying! I know I only semi regularly post since we're not quite in the TTC stage yet (few more months to go, just getting back in the swing with temping). As to what I really do, I was a labor and procurement coordinator for a large electrical engineering firm, but they moved me back into accounting when I can back from my maternity leave, so I've been doing that now for 6 months. I hate it and am looking at ways to get out from back here, possibly as a project manager for the company, or assistant safety director type role.

I do love me some housing, but unfortunately watching HGTV all the time doesn't count as a career.

Hey everyone! I am a pharmacist... my mom and sister are both teachers and I did NOT get the patience gene so I went another route. Definitely agree that teachers are overworked and under paid! My job is pretty stressful and I currently work about 60 hours a week. I am hoping that I can cut back to part time once I have kids- although my student loans have a life of their own so we will see.

Nice thread! I work in clinical research. The main studies I work on are in Congestive Heart Failure and mental health research.

Working for a video game company sounds PRETTY awesome, though.
