diapers diapers diapers

Hubby and i want to start our diaper collection but we don't know where to start. Obvious FTM right?
I keep hearing that Pampers are bad, Huggies are good, 2nd time moms choose Luvs... I'm lost and needing opinions.
Does it really matter? I dont want to stock pile and then find out Pampers give our baby a rash. Is it bad to have different brands? Will that irritate the babes skin?
How do the sizes work and how many of each size should we be getting? I hear they grow out of infant fast so dont waste the money buying too many of those.

Opinions? Experience? Answers? Haha help a crazy mum to be out!

Re: diapers diapers diapers

  • With our first she never had any issues switching from brand to brand (we were gifted a ton of diapers between our showers) and even to this day it doesn't bother her (grandparents use huggies I think and we use luvs). I'm still kind of not sure myself of sizes but I heard a great tip from a mom on here when you buy diapers tape the receipt to the box. Most stores will let you exchange unopened boxes with the receipt for a different size if baby out grows one size.

As for brands we did just about all of them. I had no issues with pampers or huggies we just do luves now because they work just as well for dd and are less expensive. We also really loved target brand (haven't used them in about a year because we don't have a target super close so not sure about how they would do now). I would stay away from Walmart. They just felt cheap and you could smell pee right away in them.

Hope that was somewhat helpful. Good luck to you!

  • We wanted to go the frugal route right away, but Luvs and Huggies both leaked too much to make it worth the money saved per diaper. We went back to Pampers and still use that brand. DD's skin is super sensitive, too, and she had reactions to certain wipes (like the "all natural" wipes, of all things). I'd recommend searching sales and getting to know cost per diaper sale trends before starting to buy them. DD was in NB for awhile and she wasn't terribly small, but she grew in the 10th percentile range, so smaller than most. She also used 1s for awhile. I'd start just with NB and 1s, and then wait until you're settled into mommyhood to deal with bigger size needs.

  • After a while of spending so much money on huggies and pampers. We switched to Luvs. Then said hey why not try Walmart brand! And those worked just as good and are half the price. Maybe if your afraid of sensitivity wait until they are in a size 3 to try a cheaper brand. But remember how crazy it is to spend 35$ on a box of pampers for the same amount of diapers a 14$ box of Walmart box gives you.

This being my second child I'm going to be a lot cheaper when it comes to some things. I can't believe how much money was wasted with my first child.
  • I wouldn't stockpile too much since you won't know what will work for your baby. We bought a bunch but my daughter had super chunky thighs and a long torso and needed diapers with a higher rise. Another thought is to buy a diaper sampler. You get 2-3 diapers of a bunch of different brands so you can find one that will work for you without having to buy a whole pack of each. BTW the diapers that worked best for us were Newborn sized Pampers swaddlers for the very beginning and then Seventh Generation after that.

  • I know I'm in the minority on this one but we only do chlorine free. I have super sensitive skin and so do my kids. My oldest is a girl and the thought of having all kinds of chemicals against her girl bits 24 hours a day kind of got to me. Yes they are way more expensive (somehow dh hasn't realized it yet after 3+ years) but for me the money was worth it. I try to hit up the sales and def stock pile. Babyganics is my favorite for fit and feel and the new seventh generation are good too. The honest company are totally adorable but not as absorbent.
As for sizes go, it all depends on the size and bowels of the baby. My daughter was 6lbs 9 oz and wore newborn for almost a month but hardly pooped. My son an 8lbs 2 oz poop machine and so went through a months worth of newborn diapers in 2 weeks then switched to size 1. If you're bf'ing and have a pooper figure about 10-12 diapers a day (one for each feeding). It's a lot!
  • Pampers! Tried Huggies twice and leaked both times.

Okay! My son is 10 months old so this is still going on currently. Lol I had a stock pile and I had no issue returning and exchanging packs if diapers to babies r us and target. I even returned one pack to Walmart with no problem either. Never with a receipt. So I really wouldn't worry about that.

The only other thing was don't get crazy with newborn diapers. My son was 8 lbs 10 oz and NEVER wore them. (The hospital sends you home with some anyway.) I pretty much knew my baby would be over 8lbs. My son went through size 1 and 2 so fast and 3 wasn't quite as fast, but he's been in 4's the longest. I think you can find charts about how many diapers to get in each size if you stockpile.

Also, I love Pampers and Target brand diapers. Target seems to be the best store brand I've found and I'm happy that they are unscented. I've tried Luvs a few times, but I'm bothered by their strong scent.
  • We're planning on using Target brand. My SIL has used Target brand for all 3 of her kids and swears by them.

I did a little research on quality and cost effective diapers and my research from articles of people who tried them all was that they all ended up recommending Luvs or Up & Up (Target). The big packs of Up & Up come out to about 14 cents a diaper where as the big packs of Huggies and I think Pampers are around 22 cents a diaper. Doesn't seem like a huge amount but over the course of a year it's about a $300 (or up to $500) a year savings. Research also showed that Up & Up is pretty durable and I haven't read any leaking complaints.

At the end of the day I guess it will still come down to trial and error, skin sensitivities and personal preference.

I started buying diapers but only a small pack. I'm nervous for my 14 week appointment to make sure our LO is doing well and okay before I start buying things.
  • @bgreist yes, no leaking issues with Target brand. They also say chlorine free or something on the box. Wishi could check right now, but there in the baby's room and he's sleeping. You can also use the cartwheel app at Target and get an extra % off a lot of times. love saving money on baby stuff!
Luvs don't leak either, but like I said they have a strong fragrance and my baby doesn't need to be in those extra scent chemicals or whatever. Other than that I'm all about Pampers. I managed a daycare for years so I knew what I liked before hand, but everyone is different and every baby is different, too.

I'm totally with you!!! I liked Earth's Best and Babyganics the most so will probably use them again :) most diapers just smell like chemicals and that is going no where near my baby!
  • Earths best are my favorite. Babyganics were ok (super soft) but did any of you notice the ink/print comes off onto baby's skin when wet/ sweaty. I stopped using them due to that.
Honest are ok and cute but I really like the plain white of earths best though.
I despise the chemical smell of other diapers and when I used them (very beginning newborn/hospital) she screamed every time she peed.
I have already bought some newborn earths best again when babies r us had a sale a few weeks ago.
  • We're putting money in a piggy bank each week for diapers and other baby things we will need but don't want to buy until baby is here.
  • We are a pampers family. My daughter has very sensitive skin and had a reaction to Huggies. She was a big baby and went straight into size 1 in the hospital. She quickly moved from 1, to 2, to 3, and has been in 4's for almost a year.

My daughter has a reaction to something in babygantics. I do not go near that brand in the store.

Money saving tip: do you have a BJ's Wholesale near you? They accept their store coupons, which they always have for pampers, plus a product coupon, off each box of diapers. With both coupons, I usually pay $33 for about 170 (?) size 4 pampers. The tiny sizes have many more diapers in them. I also recommend Amazon Mom and subscribe and save. Many baby products are much cheaper with Amazon.

It really all has to do with how your LO is built and sensitivity. DD2 has eczema and she cannot use pampers, but huggies work fine, we don't have trouble with leaks either. But all babies are different. I'd do what pp mentioned and put the money aside for the diapers. Buy a few packs of ones you'd like to try, let baby try them out and then buy more of whatever works.
I love love love the huggies wipes with Shea butter, but DD2 cannot use them. I can't remember what they're called now, but I think it's the one and done or something like that. I remember that natural care broke her out awful!
  • I just love Pamper brand diapers. My son was allergic to the Target brand.
  • I recommend at least researching about cloth...it is a much more affordable, sustainable, healthy option when all factors are considered...even with laundering cost included! We were just at a store buying our first cloth diapers and talked to a woman who was initially skeptical about them, but switched from disposable to cloth and found many improvements: less leakage, no skin issues with baby, etc.
  • @sugarplum513 I tried BJ's and they're more expensive than Target. I was surprised.

I think you have to really research prices in your area because prices are different everywhere. BJs should be cheaper for buying in bulk. Weird!
  • You won't know about your babys skin until they are here. That said, I'm a 2nd time mom and I really only want Pampers. A close second runner up would be Huggies. Luvs leaked every single time I used them. So no thanks. I stand by Huggies wipes 110% because they are thick and Pampers seems to dry out more easily. GL!

  • Also, a lot of stores (BRU) will let you return/exchange diapers. So if you stock pile huggies and need pampers later, you should be able to exchange. They use the rewards program to track your purchase/exchange.

  • Whatever's on sale!  Our son never had a bad reaction to one brand v. another.  Different brands fit better at different stages as he grew. I heard that having diapers delivered through Amazon (prime?) is pretty cheap.  I'm thinking about trying it - you wouldn't have to worry about taking up precious space with diaper stockpiles, they just show up on your doorstep.  But you have to pay for Amazon prime, right?  Anyone do this?
  • Has anyone used Bambo? I read a review here and am considering trying them: https://www.babygearlab.com/Disposable-Diaper-Reviews
  • I vote Pampers! Huggies always leaked . Never tried Luvs.
  • Pampers and huggies worked for aput now four year old. Luvs broke her out and she leaked through those right away! Not sure which route this time, probably pampers!!
  • We use Pampers where I work and they seem to work great.

Anyone have experience with Honest diapers??
  • Pampers all the way !! Huggins leak and you can smell the pee a mile away !! pampers always worked amazing with us ! And pampers has hypoallergenic (sensitive) diapers !
  • We are setting up a monthly delivery with The Honest Co.  https://www.honest.com/baby/honest-diapers-bundle

  • We use Bambo. We do cloth during the day and then Bambo at night or when we are out for a long day. They are super absorbent and I feel better about less chemicals and them being better for the environment, they're not cheap though...

My daughter is 2, and 26lbs now and we are still using size 3 Bambo diapers.

I'm really interested in cloth diapering. There's a great thread on one of the boards about it. But all the options were buying online. Do you know a store that sells them? I'm in a fairly small town and limited shopping options. I think the only way to get my very visual DH on board is if I can show him it'll be ok. ☺️
  • @ohjaime see that's funny. I don't like Huggies wipes because they're dry and pampers are wetter to me. Maybe it depends on the different types each brand carries.
  • @kmwl I've seen some at Buy Buy Baby if you have that near you. Call around to the baby stores and ask, they might be somewhere not so obvious. Or order 1 or 2 online to have in your hands. If you buy a pack of pre-folds and don't end up using them, they're awesome as rags around the house :-) I'd recommend nicer prefolds than Gerber, check out Green Mountain Diapers.

My DH wasn't too thrilled with the idea until DD was here and he started doing it and saw it wasn't that complicated.

I thought it was super easy to do cloth diapers when DD was just breastfed. They all get thrown into the washer with no pre-rinsing required. It gets a bit more complicated after you start solids, but by then you've got it figured out.
  • cloth diaper instead...much easier and they have some styles that function EXACTLY like disposables except you wash them rather than throw them away...just Google search bum genius. as for disposables it does matter! my vote is luvs (2nd time mom) but pampers are awesome just too expensive and I hated huggies...
  • I loved pampers when my son was first born. I was gifted sooooo many Huggies brand diapers and in all honesty I had 0 problems with that brand too. I'm planning to stick to pampers until I need to switch to another brand that was gifted to me. (crossing fingers I got loads of boxes like last time!) I got a whole years worth of diapies! maybe this baby will run with the same luck! :)

  • I'm going to set up a monthly delivery with an Honest Company bundle. I was shocked at how affordable it actually is.
  • I signed up for Amazon mom shortly after my first was born. I get diapers for 20% off and wipes for 15% off and they're delivered monthly. I think it's cheaper than pretty much anywhere you can get them after that discount. Amazon also has coupons you clip online every once in a while. The membership is a little under $100 a year but it comes with all of the other prime benefits like Amazon TV, free Kindle books, free two-day shipping on any prime items, etc. The free two-day shipping was a lifesaver when I was on maternity leave and didn't want to take my daughter to the store. I don't think I could recommend Amazon mom more.

As for diapers, we used Pampers Swaddlers because that's what they put her in at the hospital. I like that there was a little line you could check and see if she was wet. I think the swaddlersbecome cruisers at size 3 and that is when we opted to switch to luvs I hated the plasticky feel of Pampers cruisers.

Every baby is going to be different, which is why I think diaper stockpiles are a bad idea. Do not get me started on diaper cakes. It was not even worth trying to unroll every single diaper to actually use it and ours pretty much just went in the trash.
  • Honestly it depends on the kid. Different brands fit differently and certain kids can be sensitive to certain types or all of them, where others won't be effected by a thing. I know that doesn't help you at all. Sorry! :) My DD was (and still is) a long and skinny body type and I really liked how the Kirkland brand diapers fit her for the short time we used them. We now cloth diaper, so that's about as far as my experience goes. Good luck!

For those of you who were mentioning Target Up & Up diapers, I was reading reviews on their site and a lot of people are saying that Up & Up dipes used to be great, but they recently changed them and now they are awful and leak. Is this your experience, or do you find them to still be good?
  • With my son I was an idiot and didn't realize size one and newborns weren't the same thing. So he was basically peeing out the leg holes for days till my amazing neighbors brought over some newborn huggies with the little umbilical cord cut out. We tried a couple of the generic brands and pampers and even regular huggies but he always started to get a bit of diaper rash until we switched to Huggies pure and natural and they are amazing!!! I'm thinking of cloth diapering this next one but definitely will use the pure and natural again if that doesn't pan out.
  • Maybe!? That's so odd! I had a HUGE mega jumbo pack of the pampers wipes... And I couldn't WAIT for them to be finished.
