This is clearly a "beginners question": but why can't one just go back on the pill? What am I missing? I guess I just made the assumption that's what I'd do...
A lot of us weren't on the pill for many reasons, some pills/hormone levels and kinds aren't ideal or shouldn't be used while breastfeeding, some of us want to be immediately able to try to conceive as soon as we decide it's the right time . . . those are probably the big ones.
For me, hormonal birth control (tried many pills, the ring, and Depo) just never worked well. I stopped using those kinds when I got serious with my now-husband. We used condoms at first, then ovulation tracking and avoiding via BBT, then just pulling out. No praying about it, though! That worked for us for 5+ years. I bet we'll end up either going back to pull out, or copper IUD. I just don't like the possibility of increased bleeding.
@hoodoll82 I'm not going back on the pill for a couple of reasons that are specific to me (hormonal BC methods give me madly decreased sex drive, madly increased headaches, also my 'advanced age' has increased risk with hormonal bc) but I believe there is something with regards to the hormones in some bc pills that are prohibitive to breastfeeding. I'm pretty sure you *can* go back on the pill, but it has to be a very specific kind of pill so as not to interfere with bfing. Course, if you end up formula feeding (by choice or by necessity) then its not an issue and I don't see why you can't use whichever pill works best for you
I was on the pill... And now I'm eight months pregnant. Not the pills fault though, there was a lot of "ah shoot, did I take it" and "oh crap, I left it at home".
Great thread. Will definitely be discussing some of these with my doctor.

For me, the pill was a very effective contraceptive. I was on it for 12 years, no pregnancies, and always light, highly-consistent periods. I got pregnant six weeks after going off. HOWEVER, once I was off the pill, it was apparent that it had been majorly suppressing my libido all that time. For that reason, I'm going to look at other options.
@hoodoll82 I was taught that if you are breastfeeding you can only do progesterone only oral birth control options. That would only be the mini pill. All other oral options are combined estrogen/progesterone pills.

That sucks! Hope you can make up for lost time somehow!
