  • Ok good to know. I got a folder in the mail today from my hospital and there is a whole page about the process. It definitely just freaked me out.
  • You most likely will not feel it if you have to have one anyway, I didn't. shocking I know. I was in labor at midnight, had my water broken at 10am and episitomy around 2:40 I had issues and was a forceps delivery. it all depends, everyone is different.
  • I had to have one , not going to lie it was rough but I bounced back quicker than I expected - the dr even said to me as she was stitching, "wow I don't think I have ever done this many stiches",  ha thanks right!

At my 6 week pp checkout I still wasn't completely healed- went back 4 weeks later and good to go

My son was 8lbs 3 oz not a big baby but def not small and my midwife told me to stop pushing when ever I felt the "ring of fire" term used for pain in you vagina during pushing that indicates tearing. She said that's the warring pain to stop take a minute and then start again when you felt better. I did this and didn't put with counts of 10 or anyone telling me when to push I just did it in my own time with my body. Some pushes were short and some went on for 20-30 seconds.

Not a tear or a rip. I didn't need any stitches and some women say the first poop after having baby hurts but for me it was fine prob due to the not having stitches or tearing.
peeing can hurt a bit so make sure to use warm water in the spray bottle they give you. And spray continuously starting before you pee. so that it washes away the pee and the blood at the same time reliving any pain you might feel. Cold water is shocking and not a nice feeling I found out the hard way.

( prob tmi info but fyi your vag has to take time to go back to normal size so it can still be a bit big and scary looking if your like me and look at it a few days after delivery) <- wish someone would have told me this.
  • I ended up with one after baby was stuck for way too long. I kept declining it and finally they ignored me and did it anyhow as baby's safety trumped. I had a ton of natural tearing as well, some of it probably because I declined and the pushing went on much longer than it would have. My doula said she 1000% supported the doctor's choice to do it. I ended up with a several hour surgery afterwards. But guess what it all healed perfectly fine!

DS #2: July 2015 (preemie born at 31 weeks) - our little miracle conceived through ART - unexplained secondary infertility/adenomyosis
  • I had one from end to end with my son. I pushed for two hours and I was relieved to have one so I could get him out. I never felt much pain from it and I had a ton of stitches.

  • I would refuse an episiotomy. Natural tears are much easier to recover from.

  • I ended up with one because (apparently) it's very narrow "down there" and the dr didn't want me to rip into (trying to be polite here) by backside.

It all happened so fast I didn't have much time to think about it. You'll be so excited to see the baby and be finished pushing, I promise you won't care! When the dr mentioned it, I remember thinking "do whatever you want to get this kid out!" Recovering from that was a MILLION times easier than the hemmeroids!
  • Emmmm....is it too late to change my mind on this whole "giving birth" thing? I'm freaking out a bit!!

I wasn't even given an option!  Hearing people talk about it now sounds like they were given an option- I will remember that for this baby! FWIW I was in labor for 33 hours, 3 hours of pushing and a 9lb 22oz baby so maybe it had to happen?

My friend also delivered with the same doctor and same thing happened to her

  • I didn't have one because I had a section but my birth books talk about the perineum stretching so flat on the baby's head that it completely loses circulation. That's how OBs are able to do them without anesthesia or if you tear. When you get the tear stitched without the baby there, they do use a local anesthesia. I agree with PPs, they are pretty outdated.

  • I also stopped pushing...even if I wasn't to 10...and then did it again after a few moments...no epis and no stitches.  However,  I had a quick and easy delivery which I know is not the case for everyone.  I also just assume that if I had to have one, the doctor would do it, but I voiced early that i would prefer not.
