December 2014 Moms

Postpartum body

I'm curious how other December mom are doing postpartum. My stomach still looks about 4 months pregnant, as I have a flabby paunch that I've never had before. I've heard you shouldn't do ab workouts until at least six months post-partum so I'm holding off on that. I've started doing very moderate exercise but I'm trying to take that slow to give myself time to fully heal.
I also am dealing with some granulation tissue (which means Silver Nitrate applications every two weeks at the OB) - so hubby and I haven't been able to DTD. :( Other than the weight and the granulation tissue, feeling pretty decent. But those are two big things I'm hoping will resolve over the next few months. How's everyone else?

Re: Postpartum body

  • I have loose skin around the belly and can't seem to lose much weight yet. I work out 3 times a week and have 20 pounds to lose to get back to let pregnancy weight. I've lost only a pound :( although my stomach is a big smaller than it was after birth I also look 3-4 months prego

  • The twins pretty much destroyed me. I am almost back to my prepregnancy weight but between all of this stretched out belly skin and the diastis recti I'm still looking rather pregnant. It I am out without the girls people ask how far along I am. : / luckily DH has been awesome and tells me I am being ridiculous when I let my body get me down.

  • My weight is down to what I was pre-baby but I can see where my stomach muscles aren't as tight as they once were. My boobs however stayed at my pregnant size (38DD) so I need to buy all new work-shirts before going back to work in a few weeks. I don't think they take kindly to hoodies in the office.

  • My weight was almost pre-pregnancy about 2 weeks after birth. I've got 5-10 pounds to go... But I've got a belly pooch that's pretty gross. The stretch marks went from minimal to horrendous at about 36 weeks (I delivered at 38)... They are wide and dark and all over my belly and sides. My bikini days are likely over... But I'd do it all again for Baby Dude. He's the best.

I haven't gotten into an exercise routine like I should... But I do hope to get excellent use out of our jogging stroller one the weather warms up.

I notice that sex is harder than it used to be, so I must be out of shape ;)
  • I have a ways to go, but I gained way more weight than necessary (I definitely used pregnancy as an excuse to overeat). I gained about 55 lbs and have 30 left to go. I wish I could say I'm cool with it but I literally hate looking at myself. Plus, I'm now a 10/12 and was previously a 4/6. So literally none of my pre-preg work clothes fit, but I don't want to buy a bunch since I'll lose weight.

The good news is that I've been heavy at other times in my life and lost weight, so I know what to do and that I CAN do it. I'm in a wedding in early October so that's my goal to lose these 30lbs, which would be a healthy rate of loss.

Appearance wise, my stretch marks were out of control so definitely never going to be in a 2-piece again. And still flabby skin, but I am hoping that will tighten as I lose wight and exercise more.

  • I have about ten pounds to go, and then hopefully another five or ten. Not quite in the shape I wanted to be when I got pregnant, after a miscarriage and LEEP for prestage cervical cancer. I feel lucky though, no stretch marks and looking decent. I was ten days late with LO and had a c-section so there's a scar but below the hairline so no worries there! Skin is a little flabby and is anyone else's belly button a weird color? Mine isn't very deep and it's dark brown. Yuck.

  • I also had a csection - wondering about ab/core workouts myself. So far I have been on the treadmill at a high incline (walking) a few times a wk doing light arm workouts as I go. My stomach is so gross that I am more interested in strengthening my core than the vanity of getting my abs back. I too still look 4 months pregnant with terrible stretch marks. Working out has at least helped my attitude about the whole thing - at least I am doing what I can and eating right. It would be good to hear what any second time moms did the first time that worked (core wise).
  • I've got about 15 lbs to go. I thought breastfeeding was going to help more, but maybe it's too soon to tell. I have a small pouch but it's getting better everyday. I lost 20 lbs since but I'm attributed to water & baby. It's going to be tough. I'm starting to work out slowly since I had to have C section. I'm thinking of doing Shakeology at some point and continue with my workouts.
  • I put on nearly 5 stone when pregnant and lost the first stone in the first 2 weeks post partum naturally. I started weight watchers at the beginning of jan and in 6 weeks I have lost 16lbs so feeling good about shifting the rest as I am also breast feeding. Stomach has lots of stretch marks but getting smaller every day. I had a c section so really being careful and just walking with the pram. I can't wait to get back to the gym!!
  • Oh... Here's a great new revelation. Tossed and turned with an upset stomach all night. Finally got up to puke at 6:00 AM, and while stooped over the bowl heaving my guts out, I learned the importance of keigels. I've heard of snissing, but wasn't prepared for vom-issing? Absolutely awful. Every heave brought a new gush. Time to start working those muscles again.
  • Wow - congrats to all the mamas who are back to pre-pregnancy weight. I only gained 30 pounds during the pregnancy but I'm still about 15 pounds over my ideal weight. I was a bit underweight (106 lbs/5") when I got pregnant, so I don't expect to get down that far until at least six months but probably longer.

I've heard that we lose huge chunks of hair after giving birth. That hasn't happened to me yet — is it much later? I will say that I still have extra facial whiskers that I didn't have before getting pregnant. (I have to wax way more frequently).
  • I only gained 22 lbs during pregnancy. I ate heathy and did yoga everyday. I think all that hard work paid off cuz now I'm only 2 lbs away from my pre preggo weight. Unfortunately I lost a lot of muscle too....looking forward to getting that back.
  • MW is down a lot of weight, she was plus size to begin with and is now down to a size that she hasn't been for years.  If I recall correct, she is down roughly 40 pounds from her pre-pregnancy weight.

I'm about 8 pounds from my prepregnancy weight but the way I'm eating I don't expect to lose it anytime soon. Nursing makes me hungry and I'm okay holding into it for a couple more months if needed.

My tummy has a small pudge but it's not too bad at all, especially in clothes. Overall for this being my 3rd baby, I'm not complaining. As long as I can look decent by Summer, I'm all good!
  • I got down to my PP weight in 2 weeks but my stomach is still super big. Major muffin top and loose skin. Jeans fit but still have to wear a loose shirt. Tomorrow will be 7 weeks since I had LO. I'm setting a 6 month goal for myself to lose 20 pounds.
  • My pants fit - I have to wear loose shirts too. I'm still wearing maternity clothes, as they are comfy and cover all the problem spots. I remember Alyssa Milano said she wore maternity clothes for a year post-partum, makes me feel better about it! I just don't want to push myself too hard too early b/c I heard that can result in prolapse (a risk for the first year).
  • Congrats to those who are back to PP weight! I just had the energy & motivation to start exercising last week. LO will be 2 mths tomorrow. I gained a lot of weight too & have about 20 lbs to get to PP weight but would like to be more 130ish so goal is 30-35 lbs to lose. I've only started with the walk at home workout 1 mile so far & honestly that wears me out! And I'm not getting in a workout every day but striving for 2 to 3 times a week for right now. My belly is way too big & flabby for my liking so I am eager to get the weight off but I know it will take time. Oh & I have stretch marks galore also. Gonna have to shop for a new bathing suit!!

Is it ever too late to start wearing the tummy binder? I have one but haven't used it...wonder if it would still do good more than 2 months postpartum?

Already to my pre-pregnancy weight, but I was there 4 weeks postpartum. Yeah my tummy still looks like I'm pregnant :-(. Are you nursing? That helped me snap back quickly. I just need to start toning. Had my first workout on Saturday. Listen to your body. You will be to your goal in no time.

  • I actually just talked with my OB about my weight on friday. I gained 35 pounds during pregnancy and I'm only down about 9 pounds. Initially I lost 15, but gained 6 back. My OB said that at this point it's normal. If by 10 months PP I'm still struggling, then she said we would want to come up with a plan. She said just focus on eating healthy and getting in some exercise.
But I feel like I'm in some one else's body right now. I've also been toned and looked good in any thing. Now every time I try on clothes I end up crying. I didn't think it was going to be this hard.
  • 9 months on, 9 months off! I know no one actually wants to take that long, but your body just created a human! I have 5lb to go before I'll be decently close to pre-preg. I am wearing most of my normal clothes, I can get into my skinny jeans but it would be a fashion crime to wear them in public in my current state ;) belly pooch is there, but slowly going down. LO has nothing even close to a schedule so I haven't been able to work out. I just wish I could run, I don't mind the extra weight it's the flab that bugs me. Oh well! One thing I've done, I've found a few outfits that look awesome on me. I wore one of them 3 days in a row lol. But do what works!

  • When can I go back to the gym I had a c section and my baby is 7 weeks old. I still have loose skin I want to get rid of.???
  • I've been trying to get back to exercising. Had a c-section and my LO is 11 weeks now. My trouble is he still isn't sleeping well at night and his naps are all over the place during the day so I barely get time to cook and clean a bit during the day :/ I do get out to walk at least a half hour or so every day with LO if the weather is nice.
  • With DS1 I gained about 60lbs and it took me about 11 months to get back to pp weight and I did nothing but breastfeed. This time i gained about 40lbs and have about 20 to go. I had CS this time though and it definitely seems harder to drop the weight by BFing alone. I won't be doing much exercise until the weather gets better. I'm definitely a take your time mom though as I won't do anything that might affect my milk supply.

  • I gained 48 lbs, by week three I had dropped 25, then I put on about 6 lbs. I still need to lose 22 lbs and my body says no. I've been at a standstill for the last 10 weeks. Thankfully I did not get stretch marks on my stomach but I got them slightly on my thighs and butt. My stomach is not really flabby but I don't fit in anything. My maternity clothes are too big and my prepregnancy clothes at wy too small. I was underweight to begin with so my goal is to drop to 8-10lbs heavier than I started. I went from a size 0-2 to a 6 in my pants and from an xs to s-m for my tops. Oh and my boobs went from barely a 34b to a very full 34d. I hate my body and I beat myself up over it all the time.
Now that the weather is warming up I've been taking the boy and the dog for long walks everyday (when it's not raining), I try to get in about 5 miles a day. Usually takes me about two 45 min walks. I've noticed my thighs are starting to slim down a tiny bit. I will be starting the 30 little black dress challenge. If I find it too difficult I'll just pick a couple 30 day challenges that are not as intense. I hope to feel comfortable in a bathing suit this summer. For me it more my his thighs and butt that I'm super uncomfortable with because I feel like I put more of that weight on post partum.
  • Doing ok, not great.  DH is definitely done with me complaining about my body :/  I started at around 125 at 5'5" a size 4ish, and gained a LOT.... 170 by the end.  I don't have a scale at home but I feel like I'm down to the last 15ish pounds... which is actually ok as i think my body is holding on to a bit of weight breastfeeding a giant baby.  My real annoyance is my diastasis recti tummy.  I've always had a flat tummy before (not a perfect body by any means but that was one area I didn't usually have to worry about) so the lack of familiarity is odd.  I am going to a physical therapist for it but it's definitely discouraging feeling like I still like 4 months pregnant :/  Most of my old clothes fit, but everything just feels like it shifted.  I did a lot of crunches at first before I realiized I had the DR ( my ob told me to go for it and I had to figure it out on my own when my stomach wasn't getting better).  :/

  • I bought super awesome (and expensive) skinny jeans right before getting pregnant — even though we were TTC, I didn't know how long it would take and I needed new jeans. So I was like 106 when I bought those, I'm now stubbornly stuck at 120. I'm hoping I'll fit into them if I can get closer to 110, but I feel like the scale is stuck at 120. :)

I was 136 at the end of my pregnancy and my stomach has shrunk CONSIDERABLY than where it was at 2 months PP, thankfully.
  • I think the last 10-15 is the hardest to lose if you are EBF- maternal fat stores!

  • I gained 20 lbs (I had put on about 15 right before getting pregnant after moving from CA to Midwest. Too much cheese and beer!) about a week pp I had lost all but about 2 lbs. now I'm up another 5 or so. I was so sleep deprived/baby blues after birth that I couldn't eat much. My mom says she didn't lose much baby weight until she stopped nursing all her babies at a year old. Guess some people just hold onto it! Stomach is flab city! Didn't get stomach stretch marks but holy thigh and hip marks?! Trying to be gentle on myself and hoping walking this spring/summer will help!
  • I just hit my pre-pregnancy weight. But I have terrible stretch marks and a very flabby lower abdomen. Nothing seems to work!
  • I haven't weighed myself at all. So I have no idea how much I put on/lost. I just know my body shape has changed, but I'm not overly unhappy with my body. Obviously I lost a tonne of stomach muscle. I've set a goal to be fit enough to complete a local fundraiser 5k mud obstacle course in October. I'd rather be focused on fitness level than be upset over numbers on a scale.
  • I had gained about 70lbs during my pregnancy. I lost 60 since but i still look about 4-5 months pregnant, seems the last 10 just formed a big lower tummy pouch.
  • I was back to pre pregnancy weight 11 days after delivering, but my body shape has deifinitely changed and is not what it once was!
  • Just in case anyone else is reading these and feeling like crap comparing themselves to people who gained very little weight or are "struggling" with the last 5-15 pounds.  I gained almost 50 pounds and have barely lost any of it.  I look 4-5 months pregnant and I'm mostly just annoyed that I'm still wearing maternity clothes.  The weight will drop eventually, but I'm not going to endanger my milk supply trying super hard to lose weight.

My body looks weird.  I started my pregnancy overweight at 184.5 lbs.  I gained about 26 lbs during pregnancy which I've lost it all + an additional 13 lbs. I'm down to 171.5 (I'm 5'1).  But my pre-pregnancy clothes don't fit me the same.  I have this pouch on my bottom stomach and my entire skin all over feels elastic.  I did have a c-section.
  • I'm almost back to my pre-pregnancy size, but my body type has changed. I had a c-section and my stomach muscles are still not back to how they were before. I have a little pouch on my lower stomach, my pre-preggo jeans do fit but it pooches out over the top. Now that the sun is still up in the evenings I've started walking and biking to get back into shape.
  • Had to give a rant — I've been really stepping up being active, etc lately. SO I was feeling good and tried on some of my more forgiving pre-pregnancy clothes...and still. don't. fit. It's frustrating b/c before the baby, I was lucky enough to be one of those people who lost weight really easily. Now I'd feel happy if I can lose 5 pounds by the end of the summer (I have 15 to go). Grrr.
  • I gained 10lbs after losing most of it to start with.  Not happy and it's not coming off easily yet I'm afraid to calorie restrict too much for fear it'll affect my milk supply and I don't even eat crappy food or a lot at a time.
