  • 13 pounds at 27 weeks. My doctor says 30-35 should be expected. I can't imagine gaining another 15-20 pounds, but whatever is healthy for baby girl works for me :)
  • I am 24 weeks pregnant and have only gained 3 kilos... Is this normal ?
  • @teliahjayne You will have to ask your doctor that question. No one here can tell you what is normal for you :)
  • I'm 25 weeks and gained 12 pounds so far. My OBGYN says it's normal to gain around 25-30lbs during pregnancy. So I have 15 weeks left till EDD and around 13lbs left to gain. I feel like a total porker though. I haven't really gotten a nice "round" baby bump yet. So I honestly think I just look fat. I've craved lots of salty things like french fries and soda. I'd really prefer not to gain anything more than 20 lbs so I'm trying to cut back and work out more.

  • I actually lost weight when I found out I was pregnant and so now I'm back to where I started before I got pregnant...it's very weird since I gained a lot with my first and I feel like I'm gaining a lot of weight but apparently am not

    Hi ladies, it's clear this is a sensitive topic for many and so I'm hoping we can be mindful of our language. How much weight one gains may have nothing to do with how healthy or little one is eating. Being proud of eating healthy is great; being proud of gaining "only" a certain amount of weight can be insulting to those who have gained more - even though I know no one means it that way!
  • I'm happy to see the wide range of answers to this question. It shows us all that it's all fairly normal and that there are many in the same spot we are and that's perfectly ok :)

  • I'm 28 weeks and have put on about 8-9 kilos. I don't really want to gain more than 12 all up so we'll see how we go! I started out quite small at about 120 pounds and 5"7 so I think if I gain more it doesn't really matter, can't worry too much about that anyway

    I'm 5'3 and I've gained about 10lbs so far. I was 7st or so before pregnancy. I'm 28 weeks. I haven't managed to work out during this pregnancy but will be after the baby is born. Weight gain is strange to me and I get insecure as I used to have anorexia. But midwife commented that it's all baby bump

  • I LOOOOOOVEEEE how this thread has turned out with so many different answers from different women. I own my number on the scale and I'm not embarrassed to talk about it and sharing with other women who are going through pregnancy as well. I've seen someone say they hated this thread and why is it still around. Well, I have to thank them for bumping the thread with their comment because I love it. And the low amount of judgement is great!!!! Again, thank you so much for sharing and showing the many shapes, sizes, and experiences of pregnancy :-)

    I've been able to cut back on the sweets as well. I'm so much healthier this pregnancy than I was my last time and it shows (in my weight, my energy level, mood and comfort sleeping). I didn't realize before how much processed foods were really affecting me. I try to drink a lot of water too. I aim for a gallon a day. 
  • I've gained 8lbs @ 27 weeks. I'm healthy, baby is healthy and growing. I don't eat pork or any red meat. I also don't drink soda or eat candy. I don't eat fast food.
  • 15 lbs at 27 weeks! Much better eating and exercise habits this pregnancy than my 1st. At this time frame in my 1st pregnancy I was 24 lbs up! Baby is measuring a week ahead and growing like a weed! :-)

    Yesterday a friend posted a Buzzfeed thing on my wall about some model who looked maybe 3-4 months pregnant (and way underweight and anorexic) when she was supposedly 8.5 months pregnant. Not sure the motivation behind the post, but it sent the wrong message (never once talked about health, baby's health, or whether doctor even said this was ok - it was definitely not normal, in the way that models are never normal). I deleted it, and found myself getting upset, til I refocused on my priorities - health over vanity.

    Just one small example of "society" putting the wrong pressure on us. I am hoping that, especially if I have a girl, I won't contribute to that harmful message. I want to be very careful about how I discuss my body image. And open to weight as one of many indicators of health. Not inherently evil.

    Sorry for the long post. And thanks again to all you healthy, strong ladies! You are wonderful and beautiful - make sure you believe that!!

    I have seen the post about this woman as well. Her name is Sarah Stage and she was actually on Entertainment Tonight talking about how her pregnancy pictures went viral and the hurtful comments and assumptions people made about her health or parenting because she carried small. She said she has gained 20lbs so far and currently 8.5months pregnant. That's actually trending the normal weight gain that is recommended. So, she isn't anorexic or underweight. I kind of feel bad for her being attacked by other pregnant women and mothers for being small. With that said, I think it is not right to shame a woman for the way she carries her baby whether she has a huge belly or a tiny belly like this woman. We all have different experiences with pregnancy and should continue to support each other in making healthy choices through this wonderful journey. Of course, weight can be an indicator that something is right or wrong and we should pay attention to these signs during this very important time in our lives. However, we shouldn't beat ourselves up and we shouldn't beat each other up about our bodies either. It's hard enough to beat these cravings! 
    Hm, good points, thank you. It's between her and her doctor, really. But then again, if she started out underweight, we really don't know if her 20 lbs gain still leaves her underweight or not...

    I do agree women should be more supportive of each other, and perhaps my comments were wrong in that regard. But I also think it's laughable when celebrities and models post photos of themselves online, which are clearly to show off their bodies, and then act shocked when their are comments about their bodies.

    Ah, well. Point of this thread is we are all different, and health reigns supreme over vanity.
  • I've gained 13lbs so far (28wks today). I'm not really doing anything....just trying to limit my "indulging".
  • I have only gained about 9 pounds so far. My doctor has no concern yet that I haven't gained that much. I'm doing nothing to maintain weight. I don't eat the best as I hate cooking but I do eat a lot of raw fruits and veggies. I don't do any exercising as I'm just too tired all the time and having a lot of pressure and pain in my pelvis when I stand. 
  • I have gained around 9 kilos from a starting weight of 57.5 kg, 5"7. My weight has actually started to slow but I believe it will pick up in the last weeks! I am totally focused on a healthy baby but I don't want the stress of excess weight to lose either, but if that happens so be it, i get once chance at a healthy weight baby but have years to lose weight if need be. Trying to be healthy, but it's almost Easter and I have a famous weakness for chocolate ( I literally cannot resist if it's in the house) so slipping a little. Lots of fruit, brown carbs, lean proteins and veges otherwise yum yum!
  • 33 lbs at 28 weeks. I am so devastated by the amount of weight I have gained. I can't lose and I just keep gaining. I blame my hypothyroidism :'(
  • About 33 pounds at 29 weeks. Got a stern talking to from my doctor yesterday that really discouraged me. She wants to see my gaining slow way down for the rest of the pregnancy and talked about the complications that come from excess gestational weight. I gained a LOT in the first trimester (12+ pounds), I think due to the fact that this is an IVF pregnancy; the hormone injections and then weeks of progesterone and estrogen support really affected my weight. I haven't been eating like crazy throughout the pregnancy, but have indulged in sweets and haven't been very active over the winter. I wish my dr hadn't been so harsh and focused on weight (my BP was great and baby is measuring a week ahead, overall I still feel great and all looks well), but am trying to be intentional about making better choices. And trying not to stress about the number on the scale. I am just so thrilled that there is actually a healthy baby growing in my body!
  • Sooo much weight! 30 pounds and only two of them are the baby....wtf. I wish I were one of those ladies that gain only the weight of the baby....and nothing extra.
  • I don't think there is anything wrong with saying someone is proud of themselves for cutting out sweets and going for fruit instead of junk... Or being proud of eating healthy and keeping their weight in check... Happy (and healthy) snacking ladies :)
  • At 28 weeks baby, fluid, placenta, breasts account for over 10lbs of weight gain. I get that everyone is proud of limiting their snacking and heathly. But weight gain in pregnancy is normal and healthy. If you have only gained 5-7lbs you've probably lost a significant amount of muscle mass and that might make labor and recovery hard. Never mind lugging around a 10lb baby in a car seat. If you are losing body fat while pregnant you are releasing bioaccumulated toxins into your bloodstream. Unless you start you pregnancy with a very high BMI 25-35lbs is a healthy weight gain. Plus we have a 5 week range in our group so this thread is a little bit silly. You could gain 15lbs in 5 weeks while still eating healthy.

    Just remember, you've doubled your blood volume, which is ~4 lbs.  Your placenta weighs a couple pounds, your breasts have likely gained a pound or two (or more if they are really large), and the amniotic fluid weighs another pound or more.  It's all that plus the baby, plus whatever other stores of fat your body has put on.  It's definitely not just the weight of the baby you need to gain.

  • 16lbs and 29wks today! I snack a lot and try to keep healthy snacks on hand! I also workout 5x a week. FX for all to having healthy and happy pregnancies with happy and healthy babies come June!!!
  • At 26 weeks, weight gain of 12 pounds. Nothing but belly! Family and friends say I carry well, doctor told me I'm borderline fat!
  • I have absolutely no idea. I haven't weighed myself and neither has my midwife or doctor at any point of this pregnancy. Noone has even mentioned weight to me so it must be different in the UK. I'm taking this as a sign that the specific numbers just aren't important. I also like the fact that I don't have a pre-pregnancy target to get back to. I figure things may never be the same again and that's simply fine.

  • Depending on the scale 11 or 14 pounds at 29.5 weeks. I eat whatever I want just try to add fruits and veggies but have definitely upped my cookie intake! I was on the cusp of overweight (BMI 25) when I got pregnant. I didn't gain any until about 20 weeks though. I had been walking but had cerclage put in at 16 weeks and was told no exercising for health only sanity! Couldn't figure out why I wasn't gaining until I got a new phone that tracks my steps and realized I'm walking/running 2-4 miles a day around the hospital at work! So I guess that's it. I feel fortunate to have kept my weight gain where it is and I should be right on track for ~25 pounds unless I picked way up these last 2 months but to be honest with a healthy/happy baby I couldn't care if I gained 1 or 100 :)

    Just met a family at my one year old nephews birthday.

    Mom didn't gain much weight durin her pregnancy, and she's underweight to begin with. Only 13 lbs, in fact.

    The baby was born full term and weighed in at 4.5lbs. He spent weeks in the nicu and is still underweight.

    I urge you. Eat during your pregnancy. Don't diet. If ou can't put on weight, talk to your doctor.

    And don't post in this thread about how much weight you did gain. Let's talk about what we think our babies will weigh when they come out, now that's a number to talk about!

    Great reminder, and I love your suggestion! I'm thinking baby girl is going to be pretty hefty - DH was almost 9lbs when he was born and I was 9lbs9oz! So while I'm hoping she'll be 6-7 lbs so she'll fit into the few newborn clothes that I bought before I realized they only fit babies under 7lbs, genetics is telling me that she's going to be a bit bigger than that! Bottom line, of course, is that I want her to be healthy :)

  • My son was 8 1/2 lbs 20 1/2 inches at birth. He fit just fine in newborn clothes for the first few weeks. I gained the amount of weight my doctor recommended and am on track to do the same this pregnancy.

    Another anecdotal story to gain the amount your doc recommends, not less. One of my best friends gave birth last week and kept her weight gain lower than advised. Her baby is healthy and was full term, but weighs a pound and a half less than her first baby did and she is struggling to regain her birth weight. The more a baby weighs the longer the intervals they can go between feedings, and that makes a huge difference in those first few sleep starved weeks of parenting.

    Oh, that's great! I'd read somewhere that newborn clothes (as opposed to 0-3) only fit babies under 7 pounds. Again, obviously baby's health is what's most important, but this reassurance that even if she's a heavier baby she might still fit in the clothes I bought is awesome! I also didn't know the info about feedings, thanks for sharing!

    My DS was 8lb5oz and 22inches and he also fit in some NB stuff for a couple weeks. And I second the bit on feedings!
