Names Thread - Week of 2/22

Got a name question? Would rather ask us nice ladies instead of the official names board? (We get it, maybe they are intimidating)! Feel free to post name questions here!

Kudos for starting this! If no else does, I know I appreciate this beyond reason. =D>

So I'll start, I have been having a name issue but unsure for the longest time of whether or not I wanted to seek help from the almighty interwebs, but fuck it...
Here's the deal, DH and I are expecting our first baby, a little girl and we agreed on the name Lilah Rose. I love this name, I have for years, but the more I read about names, the more I worry that our name is going to be too faddish or popular and I get that she won't be the only person with that name ever, but I also don't want her to be "One of 50 Ashley's" in her class...
    So what do I do?
Other names I like are Abigail and Norah...middle name would stay Rose or Rosalie after my late great grams.

Alright...psycho ramble over and I didn't need to start a new thread for it ;)
I'd love to hear your opinions. If I could I'd start a poll in the thread, but alas I think that's impossible.

  • I think Nora(h) is also becoming uber popular right now, so you may end up in the same boat. Honestly though, I would go with the name you love. I was one of 3 Amanda's in my class growing up and TBH I didn't mind at all. In fact, to this day, when I meet another Amanda, I feel an instant connection/like we're part of some secret cool club.

    But maybe that's just me...

Yeah, I thought about that too with Nora(h)... I've only met a handful of other women with my name and I did have the connection experience that you talked about, I just don't want her name to be so common that she hates it. I want it to be more like mine that it was a rare but cool occasion that I met another person with my name.

Lilah. That's very pretty. Soft. I like it a lot. I've been lurking over on the name board and don't feel that I've seen as many of those as I have seen Norah, so as far as having many kids running around with the same name I personally think there may be less Lilah's. I haven't met anyone with a kid named that in my wanderings. I'm thinking back to when I lived in NYC before we moved to this small town last summer and I don't think I knew any. Granted, my social circle of people with children was smaller, too, but I'm pretty sure I didn't hear any of my clients addressing their girls as Lilah when I was at work full time. And as a veterinary receptionist I frequently had clients with their kids in the lobby with me.

I know how you feel about giving your kid a popular name, tho. DH and I are most likely compromising on Rowan for our boy name. BUT, it is currently trending upward in popularity, and even worse, it's also being used as unisex name, so there may be another Rowan in his classes, and it could be a girl. Even tho it is much more often being used as a boy's name, the idea of other kids making fun of my potential son for 'having a girls name' weighs on me. Especially if hypothetical girl is a grade ahead of him, then everybody is going to be used to hearing that as a girls name. Sigh. But we can't agree on our earlier boy name choices so we will probably just go with this barring some brilliant insight along the way. Maybe there will be other kids with the same name. Hopefully not too many. And hopefully not girls.

ETA - I just hope that in this small, red state town there aren't that many hippy type folk who will name their kid after a tree. Maybe we'll get lucky that way

  • @mellymar‌ I think that's what I've been needing to hear...this baby naming thing is really difficult. And it sucks feeling like maybe you should change the name you love because other people might ruin it for you, but I love the name Lilah so much and maybe I'm just being crazy because I overthink everything. Honestly, I was shocked to see it on an upcoming popular names list and almost cried. DH thinks I need a nap...lol
  • @frankengibbs‌ - it IS really hard. I'm lucky potential daughters name has been chosen for years. But if you love it I'd probably just use it. I'm beginning to think after our musings on popularity that if there are others with that name, then well, it kinda sucks, yeah. But the name will still be special to you, so she will always be unique. It is a very nice name.

I think you're right and also, I love your name choice and I can't imagine why anyone would name a girl such a masculine name, but then again there are a lot of names that baffle me as to why anyone would saddle another human with that...
  • Wish this tread had been started earlier. I got some flak for being unsure about a name I liked that my family almost hates, because it's only my choice and my DH's. Personally, asking the board is no different with the exception that my family knows me. This time around the decision is all on me, no DH, or BD. That is a lot of pressure! My kid's going to have to live with this name. Lol

I like a lot of names but not the way they sound with my last name. So far my favorite is Oliver Rhys Conlin N. However, my father hates the name Oliver. I keep coming back to it and it will probably be the final decision, but I'm keeping an ear out because so many people in my family don't like it.

I felt the same way when I saw Oliver on a list like that.
  • I have one that the baby names board didn't like too much. Our third baby, if it's a boy, will be Brooks and we are just trying to figure out a middle name. I think it goes really well with becke.tt and h.alle who are my older two. Thoughts?

  • @frankengibbs i totally understand how you feel about the popular name debate. My DH and my favorite name we agree on thus far is Isabelle which is most definitely very popular right now. It makes me cringe to think there may be several other Isabelles in her classes but i'm getting to the point of acceptance. If we love the name and both agree it's our favorite, why fight that and pick a name we don't LOVE as much? There will never be a way of knowing who your baby will share a class or job with so go with what you love. The only way your kid will have a name so original that noone else has it, is if it's made up/weird lol (or at least that's what i keep telling myself). Lilah is a beautiful name!

I love Abigail! I thinks it's beautiful...it was my second choice and if we have another baby and it's a girl too that would definitely be her name...The only thing I don't like about it is the nickname Abby but you can't win them all.

I think you ladies have solidified my love of the name Lilah for this baby though. And that is a good feeling. >:D<

I happen to like Oliver...I'm not sure if that's a double middle name that you're doing but if it is, that would be my only objection to the name. I have two middle names and it has made paperwork and the identity process difficult, even in my childhood. It took me almost a year to get all of my documents to look the same because a lot of official documents only accept one middle name and I still run into snags because I write my name FN MN 2MNI LN...shit gets old...
But if I'm wrong ignore that rant LOL

Anyways... Oliver is a lovely name, if you and your DH both like it, I vote that you go for it.

Brooks is NMS because I see it as a last name...but that's just my opinion.

Yes, it is a double middle name, however not a legal one, I didn't realize I included it in the post until you mentioned it. Habit of saying it together all the time to see how I like it in use. The reason why I chose to give my kids two middle names is a long personal story. My older son is called Alexander Micheal Conlin, his last name is different (messy divorce in progress) from what his brother will have. Since I call my oldest Conlin as part of his name, I didn't want to use Conlin as a first name for my second (my father's preference), but liked that they would have it in common and as a nod to my dad, although it's not legal. He is really the one against using Oliver. He actually makes an involuntary face of hate and disgust every time someone says it....I'm feeling a lot of pressure on the subject because I'm a single mom, so it's all on me. And I my kids and I have to live with our family lol. I've told my dad to get over it but the face continues...I hope it's involuntary.
  • @brandyann15‌ - I like Oliver. We were trying to go with a book or comic book character initially, which is how we got to the impasse which led us to a non book themed name, but anyway. Oliver was on our list for a little while because of the Green Arrow reference. We ended up against it cause, honestly we just didn't like the Green Arrow that much. Anyway, Oliver sounds good with those other names, looks good next to them, and is a dose of traditional next to Rhys (I know that's how its traditionally spelled, vs Reese, and I like it, hippy that I am) so he can choose to go by the more traditional Oliver, nn Ollie (which is fun), or the off the beat Rhys or Conlin. And I think I am officially on the 'Eff it if you love it and its popular train'. Your family had a chance to name their kids already. Its your turn.

@SouthMinnieAppleMama‌ - Brooks is cool. I wouldn't use it, but I don't see anything wrong with it. It works with your sibset, too. Since it gives me a kind of distinguished vibe, maybe something in the middle like Hamilton? If you have a long last name that may not work, but with Brooks being one syllable something with more sounds may work in the middle.

  • I used to love brooks until we had 12 of them on our floor ( l and d).
  • I understand the popular name struggle. Before we knew if this was a boy or girl, the boy name we had chosen 9 years ago got super popular (Jaden - it's in the top 10 now!) and I was starting to have second thoughts. We lucked out with it being a girl but I was starting to panic about if it was still what I wanted.
However, we probably would have gone with it anyway since we liked it so much and it went along with the trend in the family.

  • I really like Lilah, for the record! I was pushing for Leila (like from Futurama) or Leia - which DH nixed for being too obviously nerdy. But I'm trying to find kickass female role models and so few with decent names! Ruth (Bader Ginsburg), Helen (Keller) and Nancy (Drew) are all too "old sounding".. Sigh!
  • Is Lilah pronounced like Lyla? Like in Friday Night Lights? If so, I love it! That was one of MY names :)
  • And when I say "my" I meant I liked it but my husband didn't.

Our baby girl is going to be Sydney. Which we all love, and it goes well with my sons. Even though it's not the reason why we named her...I like how there was a Sydney in a great "kickass" role on Alias.

I like Oliver, but the hubs doesn't and he even said when we were only talking about conceiving that if we have a boy he wants to call it Kenneth after his grandfather.

We have a list a mile long of girl names. I think my favorite right now is Jeanette. Mom and I go to Nag's Head every summer for a long weekend together and Jennette's Pier is one of my favorite places there. I would spell it Jennette, from what I can tell it's an acceptable deviation, but she would be correcting people forever so I think I'll go with the common spelling.

  • I like Ivy. And besides, Poison Ivy is a badass supervillain-ess in Batman comics. Its a strong female character. She's hot, too. All pros, in my book.

  • @mellymar‌ I am struggling with this same thing! DH and I both love the name Reece (my husband says that's the boy spelling). Reese is rising in popularity as a girls name and I'm worried our son will feel like we gave him a girl name. DH is not concerned about this at all. I like Rowan a lot!
  • I'm having the hardest time with this, too. I'm a single FTM, so the decision (good or bad!) is all on me... So many of the names I have loved are getting more & more popular, and I really want a "one of a kind" name that still isnt too strange... What are everyone's thoughts on Reed or Carter? Sound too much like last names? I'm using Mark as a middle name, after a childhood friend who recently died....
  • Thanks ladies! I didn't think it was that much of a turn off but It's good to hear it from someone else, I think it will definitely be a top contender.

I'm not a fan of last names as first names, however, I do like the name Reed but spelled Reid instead...it looks better to me that way, less last-name-y
  • I like Ivy! My only hesitation I had about using it myself was the popularity of "Blue Ivy" aka Beyoncé and Jay-Z's kid...
  • amccoy129 the whole boy name thing being used on girls is a real bummer! I think that before I got pregnant with a possible boy I might have been behind it a little more, but now as a possible boy mommy I'm not digging it. Reece is nice, I haven't met or heard of any girl Reese's (pieces? ha...) in life yet, either.

@FirstTime41 I knew a dr (vet) named Reed and he was a way cool dude. I'd never met anyone with that name before, I thought it was a cool name. Carter is cool, too. As a stand alone I like Reed better, but paired with Mark I think Carter may be better. Reed Mark just sounds a little abrupt, to me.

And altogether, this whole discussion (and not getting my names ripped to shreds by the name board) has put me firmly in the camp of if we love it, use it. ‌

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I was thinking the same thing about the abruptness of two single-syllable names... Thank you, everyone for the feedback. I've been too hesitant to run it by family/friends!
  • We are naming out daughter Kaiya Branna. I love the name. I first heard the name when I had a little girl I taught while substituting For a teacher on maternity leave. Although the name Kaiya isn't popular, we adore the name.

We were going to name our baby Davin Neil if we were having a boy. Nevertheless, we're having a girl, so, Kaiya Branna it is!
