Anyone else really stubborn about buying maternity clothes?

I've only bought enough pants to get me through a week and only 1 maternity shirt thus far and it was actually free with the pants purchase. I can still wear some of my stretchy or flowy shirts still or I wear an open cardigan over a stretchy tshirt/tank. I also refuse to buy a winter coat even though mine is just about busting at the seams now. My husband and mom basically forced me to buy maternity undies this weekend, lol. They fit a little better but I still don't think they were worth it. I'm just wondering how I'll feel when I'm closer to 9 months. Hoping I can continue to get away with not buying anymore shirts! The pants are pretty comfy so I can see myself wearing them post-baby. What are you all doing?

Re: Anyone else really stubborn about buying maternity clothes?

  • I've bought about 4-5 things. Other than that, I am wearing leggings and long shirts or dresses. I had some with my first two kids and gave them away. Since this is the last baby, I am trying not to spend money on the maternity clothes especially with only 12 weeks to go.

I created a capsule wardrobe of maternity wear because I knew it would be temporary, my options consist of:
    2 pairs black pants (maternity)
1 pair dark wash skinny jeans (maternity)
1 pair dark wash boot cut jeans (maternity)
4 cardigans: tan/oatmeal color, black, cream, burgundy (not maternity, just what I had)
5 tanks: black and white stripe, 2 black, charcoal, white (mostly regular old Navy but a size up)
    a burgundy maternity blouse
2 dresses that aren't maternity but are knit and work well so far with tights and boots (one black and one charcoal grey)
    1 pair maternity tights
3 long sleeve fitted maternity t-shirts (navy and white stripe, mint, and white from target)
My bras are still the same, not much change in size over here
I am a hanky panky thongs girl so those stretch quite a bit and I haven't had any fit or comfort issues there either.

So everything goes together cohesive and I can mix and match pretty much everything... I do laundry more often but I don't mind and I have just a few pieces that transition to many different occasions...
    I hope that helps!

Edited to add that pants were from motherhood maternity and aside from a few tanks from old Navy everything was from my closet or liz lange maternity for target and the quality has been great, I spent under $200 total (pants were on sale to be fair) and have not felt the need to further supplement my wardrobe so far except maybe to get a pretty dress or peice for my shower
  • I've been pretty stubborn, too.  Unfortunately, this just led to the button popping off of my winter coat (didn't buy a maternity one either)!

For a wardrobe, I have a few pairs of maternity pants (2 jeans, khakis, black, and gray), some dresses that I pair with tights and boots. Then,I have tried to use many of my non-maternity cardigans and just put a maternity tank top or camisole underneath and dress up with a chunky necklace or scarf. I'll probably need to buy some new maternity shirts once the weather gets warm.

  • I have a few pairs of pants and just had to bit the bullet and buy a couple of maternity tops. Check target.com. I found some really good deals (clearance) on maternity tops.
  • I haven't bought anything maternity yet!! Leggings and tunics for me!! Hopefully those last me til May!!
  • Honestly as we get further, even maternity clothes don't give me reprieve! The closest I get to comfortable is naked in my bed watching friends drinking grape juice out of a wine glass. Alone.

My last pregnancy I had 2 business maternity pants, 1 skirt, 5 tank tops and 1 shirt with short sleeves. So I've been wearing those and leggings and sweats that I already owned. I have bought 1 maternity item this pregnancy- a dress, for $5 off a garage sale website. This is my last pregnancy so I refuse to spend the money. I live in Chicago so not zipping any coats is extremely crappy.
  • I bought a pair of jeans, that I don't even wear ,I wear my old maternity pants more often.. I also bought XL sized camis For $2 at walmart instead of shirts because I stay so hot and they're long enough that they cover my belly. I have old maternity shirts I can wear but choose not to and only own 2 pair of maternity jeans so it works for me lol. Otherwise I live in pj bottoms, sweat pants, and DHs old work shirts haha.
  • I haven't bought a single maternity cloth, not one!!!! My pre natal cloths still fit except my jeans n pants that zip halfway. I know I will have to get some before May. 28wks FTM
  • This is our first and we plan on having a couple more so I don't feel to guilty about buying maternity clothes. It's soo much more comfortable. Just look for sales at the online sites and you can get it for cheap. Pink Blush Maternity does flash sales all the time and you can get things for 70% off usually every other week.

  • I love leggings or just yoga type pants with the band. Not only can you use them during pregnancy but after as well. As far as shirts I wear what I can until it dosnt fit. I'm 30 weeks now so I have been using my husbands shirts. They work great and are so comfortable. I have not got anything maternity this time around. It is also cold here and big huge sweaters and sweat pants are my best friend lol.

  • Loft Maternity has great sales too. I bought five nice flowy shirts that totaled to about $120.
  • I found fleece lined leggings on sale 2 for $12 at Walgreens... I bought 6 of them:)
I'm refusing to spend anymore money on maternity clothes. Unless it's on a super sale. I figure I'll buy myself something cute for the baby shower and that's it.
Although my husband is trying to force me into buying underwear that actually fit. And to stop wearing his clothes Hahaha
  • I haven't had to buy anything yet - still in pre preg clothes for work and leisure.

Trousers are getting a little tight around the waist though now at 30w!!!
  • Wow! I'm surprised some of you can still wear pre-preg pants! I wish I could. I even tried to just get a belly band and keep my old jeans but that stopped working about a month ago. I definitely feel better that I'm not the only one giving in to all the maternity wear. I would love to wear leggings instead of having to buy pants too but its been 20 degrees and under all winter (today was 2 degrees when I got to work :() and I don't have any long tunics or dresses to wear with them. I imagine they are way more comfortable than any pants though!
  • My casual at-home clothes still fit me fine, but those and especially leggings are a no-go at work.  Most of my work wardrobe consists of formal dresses and suit coats, so the dresses are now too short with the belly pulling them up and/or are too tight to transition.

I finally caved and got a pair of jeans (thank goodness we moved to "business casual" from formal a few weeks before I got pregnant!), two tanks and two-long sleeved tees from the Gap that I pair with my suit coats and/or scarves.  And the rest of the time, I wear non-maternity shirts I have that are long enough to still work.

I did also buy a pair of maternity yoga pants (my regular ones still fit, but I wanted to try them anyway) two weeks ago, and they are amazing and worth every penny!!
  • I switched to maternity clothes a long time ago, and feel so much more comfortable. I'm not allowed to wear leggings to work, so buying dress pants was a must. My mom took me shopping and bought stuff for me and then MIL gave me a $200 gift card for Christmas. Both were so helpful. I have been living off of this wardrobe since December and loving it. I still have a bit more on another gift card but I'm saving it in case some of these clothes aren't comfy anymore in the last few months.
  • I've been given alot of hand me downs and I've bought some too. I'm having twins so I started showing really early. I've got 10 weeks max to go so hopefully all of this will last.
  • I work in an atmosphere that requires professional dress. I found super sales at kohls and bought some at target.
I have 5 dress pants, 1 for spring weight, 4 for winter. I bought a pair of leggings/tights to wear underneath for this extreme cold.
I have 6 light weight tops, 2 sleeping bras and 5 tanks because I layer everything.
My coat is a regular long black fitted/flared wool overcoat that somehow is great at fitting on top and flaring over the bump.
Everything else I wear are long stretchy tops that are tunic length which I pair with jackets that I leave unbuttoned.
My husband gave me a gift certificate for V-Day to buy a fancy outfit for the shower. I can't wear any pre-preg pants. The pressure even below the bump hurts.
If I need any more clothes before the end I will get them on eBay.
  • This is my first pregnancy so I know anything I buy will probably get another wear. My boobs got way bigger early on so I bought a couple of maternity tops and nursing bras early on. I also bought a pair of maternity jeans right away because the bloat was so uncomfortable. Anyway, in general I find maternity clothes to be way more comfortable and therefore worth spending a little money on.

  • I refuse to buy a ton of maternity specific items. They are expensive and not really my style. I have purchased a pair of maternity slacks, 2 jeans and a pair of black pants. As far as tops And dresses, I just wear my regular clothes. I have bought a few new (non maternity) tops but just get a medium instead of small. I feel like it's a waste of money. I only have 2 months left so I think I'm in good shape with what I have.
  • My first pregnancy, I bought NOTHING.
My 2nd - I finally bought 2 pairs of maternity jeans and some simple shirts. I had started my job at an animal hospital and wearing a fitted shirt under scrubs was way more comfy.
My 3rd - I'm spoiling myself and I honestly can't tell you why. All sale items though... They were just cute and maybe it's because I feel like a cow this time and I want to look cute. ;)

  • I don't want to get a lot of maternity clothes either... I went to LOFT online and took advantage of the 70% sale they had and got one pair of leggings, one pair of jeans and a pair black work pants. I was struggling with finding a pair and thanks to all you ladies and your suggestions I finally went with LOFT. I am also wearing my cardigans from pre-pregnancy and getting tanks from Old navy.
  • I have bought 0 maternity things for myself (at 28 weeks now). My mom bought me 4 maternity tops at Christmas, but other than that, I've been belly-banding, wearing the stretchy clothes from my pre-pregnancy wardrobe, and wearing leggings and maxi dresses. I'm caving this weekend and looking for a couple of sale dresses and pants... The belly band is on the verge of not cutting it anymore :/
  • I've bought 1 pair of jeans and I got 2 pairs for christmas apart from that I've managed with my normal clothes I'm 29 weeks now, hopefully will last all the way
  • I love this post! I've bought one legit maternity shirt and two other flowy shirts I can wear now and afterwards. Friends have offered a few things to borrow but only 1 sweater fits well. I did have to buy a couple new bras because my still-not-big boobs were too squished in 34A's :) I'm still making do with my rubber-banded work pants and jeans with Bella bands. With 11 weeks to go, though, I do want to get actual maternity jeans and a pair of shorts for post-baby since it'll be warming up then.

I guess I'd rather wreck my regular clothes and spend money to replace those than buy short-term stuff!
  • I was lucky enough to get some maternity pants and tops as gifts from my mom and mother in law, but most of the tops are starting not to fit now, and I think I need to go up a size in pants. For the most part I think I can wear a lot of the tops after I give birth because I have a curvier frame naturally, and I know I will use the maternity pants as I lose weight/return to my normal size, but buying anything to fit me for the last 9 weeks is going to be harder because I know I won't get any use out of them after the pregnancy...I wish maternity wear wasn't so overpriced!
  • I ordered a lot from thredUP. They're way cheaper bc they're used so I don't feel guilty. I figure most maternity clothes aren't worn very much in the first place.

I found 3 pair of maternity jeans at the goodwill for $3.50!!! Brand new with tags. I have yoga pants that still fit that I wear too. I can't see spending tons of money on maternity clothes, we're almost there anyways.
  • I have been very hesitant to buy maternity clothes. They r so costly and you don't use them for long
  • Leggings and yoga pants! I also found tank tops and cardigans work very well.
  • Aww I have to say it thank goodness for my sister having a baby in December. She gave me all her maternity clothes to wear throughout the pregnancy. I may need to get a few more shirts once it's warm out since most is warm winter clothes.
  • Maxi dresses and skirts with leggings underneath and stretchy shorter dresses as shirts to go over my 1 pair of maternity jeans. I only buy stuff that I can wear post baby. This is my 2nd time around and I will pout if I feel like I could have saved money.

I bought a bunch of dresses, a few pairs of leggings and one pair of maternity jeans.  On the weekends, I've been wearing my pre-pregnancy "fat" jeans with the hair elastic trick which worked well until today, but it's time to switch. The only problem is that my maternity jeans are possibly the most unflattering pair of pants on the planet.
  • I have a few pair of maternity jeans/pants and i wear tanks with cardigans mostly. I have a few maternity tops. I just cant get myself to buy anything new since this will be my last.
  • I too am stubborn! I have only bought two maternity tops... both neutral, solid-colored tees that fit nice and cute around the bump with a fashionable v-neck. One beige and one black. They were only $5 each. Aside from those I have been fortunate enough to still fit into my yoga pants (yes, believe it or not... lol!!). And fortunately too I have always been petite but liked looser style clothes for me, so I can still fit into my oversized sweaters and sweater dresses. Leggings are good pals too! Really I am fortunate in the fact that I haven't really gained any weight on my body except my bump. I am carrying completely in the front!!!!! It is awful on my back though. I'm hoping my outfits will work with me to May... lol. I do have some flowy summer dresses for after babygirl is here to carry me through the summer too. I am too stubborn! :p
  • I live in Michigan which is very cold and I have been soo hesitant about spending any money on myself knowing everything we will need for te little baby...I bought some stretchy black maternity leggings at kohls for 13 bucks and I also found some XL long sleeve shirts that are not maternity but it have been wearing since the beginning of my second tri. I har also come across second hand mommy clothes online that were very reasonable and when you are done you can always sell at mom2mom sales or at a consignment store. I am broke and on my 3rd tri now and my winter coat doesn't zip anymore but instead of buying a new one I just leave it open...soon enough baby will be here and I will have no need for maternity clothes anyway...hang in there!!!

  • I've been able to wear some flowy shirts and maxi dresses with a cardigan. Pants I can't get around.

And frankly, I'm all belly and the rest of me is still about the same, so regular shirts in a larger size just look sloppy on me.

I bought a bunch of maternity stuff at a consignment store that was having a half off sale. I spent $50 and basically got a wardrobe. My friend buys and sells used kids clothes on ThredUp.com and I know they have maternity, too.

  • I ended up buying two pairs of jeans, 2 t-shirts, one tank top, a long cardigan, one long sleeved shirt two dresses and a pair of shorts. All except one dress came from Old Navy. All were either on sale, clearance or were bought with Super Cash. The one dress that wasn't on sale was a Valentine's gift from my husband. He says that I should treat myself once in a while but I have a hard time buying things I will only wear for a few months.
  • I am super stubborn too! I originally bought a pair of nice j crew maternity jeans but I am having twins and those stopped fitting at 23 weeks. Bought lots of basics from Old Navy- two leggings, multiple tshirts, tshirt dress and I have been repeating stuff like crazy, layering with my original wardrobe. One pair of target maternity tights. Those are awesome. I also found its easy to make the same outfit look different by wearing different scarves/necklaces/cardigans/shoes. Maybe buy yourself a few scarves and necklaces since those you can always wear!

Seriously though, doing laundry every few days. The pants situation is the worst!
  • I havent brought any maternity clothes except a bellyband.Im 27weeks!!I refuse to when its just soo expensive and doesnt fit my style.I just keep.squeezing into my leggings and shirts pre pregnancy size.I wish somebody would say something!!!!!If they dont like they can buy me some until then I rocking out with what I have( lookin like a sausage in a hotdog bun)lol
