Never been a coffee drinker, but I'm certainly going to have to be more thoughtful of how much tea I have daily. Luckily tea doesn't have nearly as much caffeine! I can't give it up completely (it's been my go to drink for years since I stopped soda), but it's amazing how many other drinks out there DO have caffeine!
There's a really great run-down on coffee (and other vices) in the book Expecting Better, which my doctor gave me. It gives you an actual risk analysis based on evidence so you can make your own decisions with how much risk you're comfortable with. For me to cut out everything would be so stressful that stress would be bad for baby! So I'm doing half caf coffee and one small glass of wine per week. And I feel calm and happy!
still drinking coffee here, but I should really try to be better about it, cause I'm drinking more than one cup a day. on the soft cheeses you should be fine..
I'm also having lunch meats, because I already had toxoplamosis, and that's the only reason why you should avoid lunch meats
I'm still drinking coffee, though the last couple days, it irritated my stomach s bit. I used to consume OBSCENE amounts of caffeine, back before I had my son, but now I drink 1-2 cups a day, but not every day.
When I was pregnant with my son, I tried to go off caffeine altogether and hit horrible headaches. My doctor actually recommended increasing my caffeine intake, which I did.
Unless your doctor says otherwise, it's probably ok to have a cup of coffee in the morning.
My doctor said the same thing--that caffeine withdrawal might be causing my headaches. So he told me to have one cup of coffee a day and that does seem to help!
I am drinking one 6 oz cup a day made with beans from a local roaster. My doc said that was fine (I asked while TTC).
Most small local coffee shops use 100 percent Arabica beans, which naturally have less caffeine than most major store and chain brands.
Also, BEWARE OF MOST STORE AND CHAIN DECAFS. Most are decaffeinated by washing the beans in chemicals. The most common is formaldehyde. This is why decaf often has that strange taste. Yuck!
Look for Swiss water decaf coffee instead. That process soaks the beans in water to remove caffeine. It is just as effective at removing caffeine (97 percent decaf- no brands will be 100 percent decaf) but does not involve mystery chemicals. It tastes a ton better, too.
Yes, truly good coffee is usuaIlly more money, but it makes sense to do it while pregnant even if you will go back to Folgers or Starbucks later.
I took a few days off of coffee because it sounded terrible. The past few days though I've had 1/2 a cup, brewed at home. I used to drink 3-5 cups a day, so this is huge progress -- and way easier than I expected, to be honest.
I used to drink up to 4-5 cups a day, now I drink a small one ... I thought I could stop completely and after my first hour at work I left and went to starbucks baby will need to deal with my addiction I believe!
I didn't give up coffee for my first and don't plan to now. OP you should look into an alternative for your green tea. Most teas are frowned upon during pregnancy
I love coffee and recently I tried switching to decaf and it tasted like burnt coffee more than anything.. I recently got introduced to green tea from Panera Bread and I absolutely love it! I think that will be my replacement;)
Oh heeeell yes. But I do try to keep it to 200 mg/day. When I was pregnant with DS, I tried to spread out my caffeine with teeny cups throughout the day. Kept me at an even level without feeling deprived.
I had a half calf from my coffee place this morning and it did the trick and was so delish. I agree Shay, decaf tastes gross. it reminds me of my grandmother and her Sanka, lol.
I have heard conflicting things about green tea. One of my books says it interferes with folic acid absorption. I plan to ask my ObGyn on Feb. 25 at first appointment. I will report back what I hear.
Update: I asked my OB at my first appointment about her take on caffeine. She told me one cup a day is absolutely fine. I've been doing half decaf, half regular this past week but figured I'd add my .02!
I got my latte the other day and it's the weirdest thing, it tasted like blood. So I'll be laying off the coffee for a while as is appears my tastebuds have gone bonkers. I'm sure everything is fine in moderation, though I've heard that decaf is worse for you than regular due the the chemicals they use in "decafinating" it.
Okay some advice green tea has more caffeine in it then coffee. I drink maybe one cup a day, but come on I have a 4 year old that wakes up at the crack of dawn and then I work 7-19. And I heard that you can drink coffee. Withdrawal is way worse for you. If you cut down it is good. But I would ay drinking coffee is the lesser of the evils, smoking and drinking is worse. So I done it with my son and I will drink it with this one. Not that I can down more then 3 sips with out getting nauseous. Good luck
My doc says caffeine is okay I in small doses but says I should never drink it on an empty stomach!! Although I was asking her about green tea, she included coffee and said any caffeine will affect you more strongly and negatively on an empty stomach. First drink warm or hot water upon waking to cleanse the system, then have breakfast, THEN have caffeine (a small dose!) this will help avoid those jitters and heart racing!
With DD, I searched how many mg of caffeine were in almost everything that I knew contained caffeine. I kept my daily intake at or below 100mg until I got to my first appointment. I don't think I've seen anyone say this yet, but I might have missed it (and it totally shocked me)...I was operating with the rule of keeping caffeine at or below 150 mg/day, and my doctor told me that the research suggests 400-500 mg/day is still acceptable. My OB specializes in high risk pregnancies and has been in practice for a long time. I trust her, as you should your own doctor, and she is pretty conservative on many other things. With that said, I still keep my daily intake below 200mg by making half-caf. coffee for my morning cup and if I have something in the afternoon, it usually has 50mg of caffeine or less. I feel better when I drink water all day anyway. I learned the first time around that you can't get too crazy about what you "can't" have. Ask your doctor and listen to their advice. Ask them for literature to do any further reading if you're more curious.
I tried going cold turkey.... Had headaches for a week. Finally caved and had a cup and felt HORRIBLE, so I've pretty much given it up. I was a 3 cup a day kind of girl lol my doctor said a cup a day is fine. I've been drinking green tea when I absolutely need it.
Coffee isn't something I plan to give up. I had 1-2 cups a day with my first one and she turned out fine. At home I make regular but don't make it as strong and at starbucks I order decaf.
I've been drinking coffee. Before I found out I was pregnant, I'd already begun to cut down. But I haven't had any energy. I'm tired ALL the time. Since I've become pregnant, though, I can't stomach a whole cup of coffee. I don't know if it has to do with the pregnancy but I find myself only being able to drink 1/4 to 1/2 a cup.
I've lost my taste for coffee! I'm down to half a mug a day, which is only about four ounces. Cutting back happened gradually, so I'm not experiencing headaches, but I miss the simple pleasure of sitting down and drinking a whole cup.
I don't drink coffee, but I have a really bad addiction to soda. This time around, I hope to completely wean off it but we're not starting on a good note.
There's no way I'm giving up caffeine! But I do track it and keep it under 200mg.
Actually, with my last pregnancy there were days where I avoided it since it's a bit of a stomach irritant and my morning sickness was pretty bad toward the end of the first tri.
I used to drink at least 3 cups a day of something caffiniated and usually one was some kind of espresso drink. I cut back during my 2 week wait when we were TTC to one cup at most of anything with caffeine. But now caffeine makes me SO jittery I feel crazy! So I'm not drinking any caffeinated beverages right now.
Re: So, who's still drinking coffee?

I'm giving up on the whole signature thing.

I normally have 2-3 cups per day....how I knew I was pregnant before I tested... I didn't want my coffee. So I guess I'm a non-coffee drinker for now
I think the baristas are mad at me now.
I heard its like 6 or 7 full size candy bars lol!
