Hey, I am mixed. My father is African American and Indian, and my mother was German, Irish, Polish, and Dutch. So people always ask me what my race is! This will be my first child and my bf is African American:)

@justhyr I am amazingly white as well. Like, I can get maybe a shade darker but I am still tan. Wore a white dress to my H.S graduation and it matched my legs. People thought I was wearing tights. And on top of that, I blended into the wall. >_<
Also- We have the same due date! :D

@2babealertz I don't mean to insinuate that I am "normal". Obviously there is not "normal" skin colour. I just lived in Florida for 9 years and went to school there, I wanted to teach so I took a teaching diverse populations class and the teacher made me feel horrid for being white. Like, everyone white in there couldn't possibly know what it was like to teach children of different backgrounds. I dropped and took another one and did much better. The teacher was less hateful.

I think that it's important for your child to know both cultures and can identify with both. My baby's dad is English and I am American so we have the same race, but not the same culture and we want to be sure they can feel comfortable with both cultures.

I'm white - my family comes from England and Ireland and a bit from Italy.  My husband is also white - his family is eastern European (they're Jewish).  I imagine we will have a pretty white baby, but I'm hoping it has my husband's complexion, which is much darker than mine.  It's definitely going to have brown eyes and brown hair!

I'm mixed. Black white and Native American. Her dad is white. So she'll definitely be mixed.

I am white European mutt.  My hubby is 1/4 African American (very light brown) -- who knows how the baby will look!

Question for all of you mixed ladies: how do you identify yourselves to other people?

My husband and I have an ongoing debate about what we should call our kids/what we should teach them to call themselves. I have always thought "mixed" was ok, but my husband hates the term, so that's out. "Bi-racial" isn't technically accurate, but "multi-racial" doesn't feel quite right (technically, I am "multi-racial," but I identify as black).

Am I over-thinking this? Should I just wait until they are old enough to have questions to figure it out?

@babealertz‌ I've been wondering the same thing! My bf wants us to just say our child is black once he/she is born, but because I am of different races I don't know what the correct term would be for our offspring.. I think I will wait until my child is older and has questions about ethnicity.

@baby3oo I know a number of mixed people who identify as black as a political solidarity and/or one-drop-rule thing, so I totally get where your boyfriend is coming from, but it's not cool if you feel erased! I guess you and I will just figure it out as we go along.

I am a white European mutt and my husband is first generation Columbian and Puerto Rica(his mom born and raised in Columbia and dad PR)- our daughter has his features and complexion and is gorgeous! Hoping number two follows suit although it would be nice to have at least my one feature of mine! ;)

    I'm 1/4 Irish, 1/4 British, 1/2 Puerto Rican. Husband 100% Chinese.

My husband and I are both Japanese but 4th generation in Hawaii so we both don't speak any Japanese. We follow some Japanese cultures but many have been westernized since our family has been in Hawaii so long.

I've got a mix of Anglo-European white in my background (mostly English since my dad's side of the family came over on the Mayflower and to Jamestown) but my husband is 1/4 Cheyenne, so our kids are 1/8 Cheyenne. Our son seems to have inherited my paleness though, and not my husband's tan.

I'd love for my husband and kids to have the chance to learn more about Cheyenne culture, as my husband was adopted and doesn't have ties to his birth family.

I am 1/4 Italian and 3/4 Puerto Rican and my DH is full Puerto Rican born and raised in PR. I on the other hand was a military brat and was born in GA and lived all over the world from NC to Japan. He speaks Spanish and I know "Hola" and "Adios." I want our child to know Spanish as well but how can I teach her (fingers crossed) if I don't even know myself. I have a lot to learn in the next 8 months. :(

I am half Irish (mom born there), half German, and the dad is all Colombian (we think...he was adopted from there so who knows!). So our baby will be half white and half probably Colombian. With an Italian last name, so everyone will think it's Italian.

I can tan, but I will still be jealous of my kid's tan eventually!

I am 1/2 Irish and 1/2 European Mutt, while DH is 100% Filipino. The funny thing is a lot of the names we both like are Irish names (like Seamus or Siobhan) and it will be interesting because we will have this child that I assume will look Asian with a true Irish name. It's sure to confuse people!

I'm Norwegian and DH is Swedish, but we both got brown/dark brown hair, however also blondes and red heads runs in the family so hair colour can be anyone of those. Our son's hair is still quite light coloured with a hint of red to it.
