Coffee - Who's drinking it, who isn't?

I have been drinking about a cup a day lately, and maybe have some Pepsi during dinner. I thought I was okay but for some reason I got nervous and started looking on line at studies for caffeine and pregnancy.

My OB says a cup is okay, but after reading different articles I am all of a sudden nervous about the coffee and coke I've been drinking.

Sorry if this has been a topic of discussion before, but now that I am further in the second trimester, I think maybe some of you ladies may have changed your coffee intake like I did? What are your opinions?

  • I would but it makes me sick now. My mom drank coffee every day with all three of us. Coffee is much better for you then soda (less sugar and fake stuff).

    Drink away!

  • 1 cup a day just about and random iced tea. Maybe a Dr Pepper every few weeks. They really dont "know," but moderation in everything pregnant isnt a bad idea.
  • I haven't been drinking pop because it makes me feel sick but I'll have a cup of coffee a few times a week.

  • I went from drinking a cup a coffe a day to 0 cups as soon as I found out i was pregnant cold turkey. I wake up for work at 5am. At 4mos now. I have a cup here and there on days im totally dragging. Still not everyday. I did get nervous. The other day I drank a cup and my heart started racing. Probably because I never drink coffee anymore. But I panniced and thought if it is doing this to my heart is it doing it to the baby's as well ?
  • I can only drink decaf anyway because I don't tolerate caffeine very well, so I'm still drinking coffee.

  • I drink decaf coffee in the morning. Love the warm drink in the morning and no guilt about caffeine! :)

Same here! I was so use to drinking a cup in the morning! For me, it's more of just a routine. I need something warm in the morning. :-)

  • I drink a cup of coffee every other day, not for any particular reason, just have one when I need it. I haven't been drinking any pop even though I've been craving it!! I hear one of the big things about caffeine during pregnancy is that it absorbs water from your body. Water that you and your Baby need. As long as you are drinking enough water, enjoy your cup!
  • I crave coffee and soda now :( I usually get a half decaf coffee twice and day. A soda here and there.

I thought about switching to decaf but the main reason I enjoy coffee is to help w my headaches. I should try decaf and see what it does for me.

I don't drink that much pop either, just an occasional sharing a cup during dinner with DH. I did tell him last night even though I am enjoying it more while pregnant than I did not being pregnant, then we should try to cut it out completly because I know jt is so bad for us. It's one of my cravings so it will be hard! But worth it I know!

Thanks for all the comments, it helps me feel better about my one cup a day!

I just learned you can do that with lattes at Starbucks. I was so happy when I found out Lol
  • I went cold turkey on the coffee once I found out but I find soda drinks really settle my stomach so I do buy maybe one every other day, take a few sips and throw the rest out
  • I don't drink coffee, but I have 1 maybe 2 cans of Mtn Dew per day. With 2 other very energetic kids and a hectic schedule, it's necessary.

  • I stopped. I know it's safe but realized I didn't need it. I actually try to only drink water...don't really have room for much extra liquid.

I live by the philosophy of why risk it. I don't work so even though I'm up at 6 am I am sitting on the couch reading to DD so I can survive without it. If I do have any it's decaf.

I am however a sucker for rootbeer. And I always thought rootbeer was caffeine free....well Barqs isn't :-( I was so bummed when I found out. So I cheated a couple times thinking I was in the clear when I wasnt. Plus now with GD I only drink soda if my sugars are crazy low and I and having a hypoglycemic reaction. It is a fast way to get my numbers back where they should be.
Please excuse typos....auto correct hates me. =)

  • I've been drinking black tea every morning throughout the whole pregnancy. Just recently have been having a cup of coffee on the weekends. Hope it's all safe! I don't feel like it's excessive caffeine.

  • I just started drinking coffee. A cup in the morning .
  • My Dr says I should not take any coffee because not everyone's body is the same and it COULD lead to a MC, but I have a lot of issues and had a MC 1 month before this pregnancy. She's a bit overprotective but with my son I remember I wasn't drinking coffee and at about week 35 I couldn't do it anymore and woke up my husband at midnight and we went to a 24/7 restaurant only so I could have a cup haha, nothing happened! I used to be a heavy coffee drinker but had to drop it to 1-2 cups a day while TTC and everytime I smell it it makes me wanna cry because I would do anything for a cup right now. If your Dr is OK with you drinking coffee then trust him, after all he knows your medical history. I know mine has to do with all my metabolic issues and the fact that I already had a MC.
  • I'm drinking coffee every day and the occasional soda when it's in the house.

    My baby will be fine.
  • Some caffeine is fine, your one cup a day won't harm your baby. I would be more concerned with the artificial junk in sodas then some caffeine but that's just me.
  • Before this pregnancy I needed at least one sometimes 2 cups of coffee every morning. Since getting pregnant, the smell of coffee made me sick. I don't drink any sodas so the lack of caffeine was rough on me. I recently discovered V8 Energy and I love them! A full servings of fruits and veggies and 80 mg of caffeine from green tea.
  • I've been doing half and half (half decaf half regular) almost every day. I was an avid coffee drinker before and quit cold turkey for a while. But with my job, I need the tiniest pick me up to work the hours that I do. My OB said one cup a day is fine, and caffeine in moderation isn't terrible. I think it's all about what is right for you. If it doesn't make you feel terrible, try a cup a day, if that!
  • I have been drinking a half decaf cup every morning especially now I am working again. I drank a cup every day throughout my pregnancy with my son and he is healthy. I don't do soda really except for ginger ale but that is more my taste preference!

  • Before I was pregnant I drank coffee every day. Sometimes twice a day. But when I found out, I quit cold turkey. I had withdrawl headaches for 3 days, but that's it! I thought I would still want decaf (just for the warmth in the morning), but I really have no desire at all! Occasionally I will meet a friend for coffee and do a small decaf. I am craving sodas more and they have helped calm my stomach. But I try to limit my intake of soda too (mostly because of the other crap in the soda). I don't want to have coffee when I'm breastfeeding, so I thought it best to quit now and get used to not having it.
  • Coffee, 2 cups every day. First baby turned out fine, I'm not worried about this one.
  • I couldn't even be in the same room as someone drinking coffee until about week 15. It just triggered ms bad. This last week I've been having one small cup per day- before getting pregnant I was a 3 cup a day coffee addict !! But I've noticed (tmi) since I've had it - I need to go toilet after the first couple of sips :-?? Must have a more potent affect on me when pregnant I guess
  • I only drink it when I need the pick me up.  So a couple cups a week.  No different then before pregnancy.

    Baby Muffy Due July.8.2015!

  • I don't drink any coffee, could never get into it period. As far as the soda, I sure would love a Pepsi but I've been sticking to a limited amount of caffeine free sodas like Sprite and Ginger ale to keep me happy.
  • The carbonation in soda seems to upset my stomach more than it ever used to, so I very rarely have that. I do have a cup of coffee most work mornings that I may or may not finish. When I'm on overnights I always have a cup...sometimes two...and on my first night shift of the week I treat myself to Starbucks.

I used to have a cup every morning and then it just didn't sit well with me so I slowly stopped drinking it. My allergies have started to cause bad headaches lately so I have started drinking it again now that the morning sickness has passed because I would rather not have any tylenol if I can prevent it. My mom drank coffee and Pepsi with all 4 of us kids and we're all fine. I think moderation is key.
  • Coffee is great for constipation! I used to drink two cups per day, them with ms I stopped cold turkey. Now I have about a cup a day but my anxiety has been getting worse so I think I'm going to switch to green tea this week and see if that helps. It has less caffeine than coffee and some health benefits.
  • I've never been huge on drinking coffee consistently, but I do love coke. I try to reduce the amount that I drink since becoming preggo but that doesn't always happen. I doubt a cup a day or even a little more than that will do harm. Now, if that's all you drink all day, it would be a different story. Although coke was literally all my sister in law drank all day every day and she and her son are both fine two years later.
  • I drink a cup a day...to be honest, it's more to help with the constipation from my nausea meds...no fun :(
  • I didn't drink any coffee in my first trimester simply cause it made me gag but I'm over it now and switched to decaf one cup a day.and I drink the occasional coke X_X but try not to have a full can

I quit drinking coffee when I found out I was pregnant, mostly because I don't love the taste it's more of a get me through the day thing and it just wasn't putting a dent in my tiredness/exhaustion so it was like pointless for me. Now that I've hit the second trimester I've had a cup here and there but I haven't felt myself needing it like I did before I was pregnant since I've gone so long without it. When I want it, I drink it, and I don't feel bad or think there's any problem with that.
  • I've switched to half caf coffee drinks. I'm finding that it's not so bad. =)

  • I didn't drink any coffee or sodas in the first trimester (it made me nauseous). But now I drink a cup a day & sometimes I will have a Pepsi or dr pepper (maybe three a week if I'm feeling frisky). Drinking coffee in the morning gives me more motivation to get to the gym for my hour workout. :)
  • I'm almost positive my head imploding and/or falling asleep at the wheel would be worse for baby than my daily caffeine intake.

Luckily my amazing doctor thinks so too. He also told me the risks are even more minimal after the 1st trimester.

(PS I drank even more caffeine with DD and they said she might have low birth weight/small head.... She weighed nearly 8 lbs and her head was in the 97th percentile.....)
  • Coffee and I go way back, I'm talking a mulitapul cups a day all day long. But since being pregnant the smell of it makes me sick. I feel like I've lost a good friend ;) I have switched to tea in the mornings though. Depends on my mood it i go caffeine free or not. I do hope at some point coffee will start to sound and smell good again, until then I wait.
