Coffee - Who's drinking it, who isn't?

Re: Coffee - Who's drinking it, who isn't?

  • Last week I bought a pack of half-caff k-cups because I had been craving coffee with creamer. Must be that I gave up caffeine for the whole first try but half caff is too much buzz for me now. I'm saving those for super tired or studying days and will pickup some decaf on my next shopping trip.

  • Coffee and I go way back, I'm talking a mulitapul cups a day all day long. But since being pregnant the smell of it makes me sick. I feel like I've lost a good friend ;) I have switched to tea in the mornings though. Depends on my mood it i go caffeine free or not. I do hope at some point coffee will start to sound and smell good again, until then I wait.

  • With my first I didn't drink caffeine the entire pregnancy - no coffee, pop, nothing. This time around I've had a cup here and there, maybe once a week if I'm exhausted, but that's it. And I didn't start this until I was probably past 15 weeks.

  • Studies show that caffeine intake doesn't affect the baby unless you intake an excessive amount. With my first, I stayed away from caffeine completely until around 20 weeks. When I got pregnant unexpectedly this time around, I had been drinking around 4 cups of coffee and several cans of coke a day (had a 4mo old-eek) so I dropped down to 1 cup of decaf coffee a day but I started getting bad migraines from withdrawal.
  • I was told that up to 200mg of caffine is ok. They really don't know what it does to the baby or how much it gets This is my third pregnancy and I still don't know what I think about it. But coffee has been around long enough it's the caffine amount that has increased that needs to be watched for. I didn't drink coffee for the first trimester with 2 of my pregnancies because it took so long to get pregnant I was a nervous wreck. Now I am 17 weeks and have a coffee every other day. I also suffer from acid reflux and coffee is hard on me. I heard that decade coffee has a lot of chemicals in it and isn't good either. But there's evidence to support both sides. If it makes you uncomfortable don't drink it. Google can be your worse enemy. Listen to your doctor.
  • Drinking a cup of coffee in am usually... But right before I got preggers I started to decrease from my 4-5 cups a day and when I got pegenant I didn't like it as much and don't often finish my cup. I do get decaf or half decaf lattes from Starbucks some days ... The baby really seems to like them cause of the milk I guess. Every once in a while I'll have a small amount of diet coke but I always feel bad drinking it (even though I'm craving it) BC of the fake sugars not really BC if the caffeine.
  • I read an analysis of some of the studies linking caffeine to miscarriage that pointed out that they all do a bad job of controlling for whether or not the mother has morning sickness. So it's possible that studies that connect higher caffeine consumption to higher miscarriage rate are really picking up the fact that women who have morning sickness (and therefore are less likely to drink coffee) are less likely to have a miscarriage. That of course doesn't mean there's no connection, I just thought it was an interesting perspective.

I drink a cup of coffee most mornings, but not all. I'm not that worried about the effect of a cup or two (what my ob/gyn said was fine), I just got out of the habit of my daily two cups when I had a little nausea in November and December. I also have the occasional tea, soda, or chocolate, but not enough to count for a second cup of coffee.
  • I've been doing about the same.  Coffee in the morning (I FINALLY switched over to half caf, which is helping...).  If you want a good book to read that will calm nerves about if you are doing too much or too little of something, read Expecting Better. It's a good find.  Congrats on your little one!
  • Let me tell you I absolutely dreaded giving up coffee when I found out I was pregnant. Lucky for me about 2 weeks later I suddenly had an aversion to the smell and quit cold turkey! Of course the hubs still drinks it every morning and the smell is kinda gross but I've transitioned into drinking decaf green tea. It helps me with my morning ritual but doesn't have the caffeine. But as others are saying, you are allowed a cup a day and I'm sure a cheat here and there won't hurt!
  • I occasionally have a real coffee. Mostly stick to decaf. But, I do have one Diet Pepsi almost every day. That's way better than before I got pregnant! I was drinking four or five Diet Pepsi's a day!
  • How about ice coffee? Vanilla ice coffee :x I cut down on soda, I drink some here and there.... Mostly during the weekend
  • Soda is terrible for you even when you are not pregnant. I'm not being judgment at all I know some people can't stop drinking it. I do love coffee but I just buy a decaffeinated sugar free powder that gives me coffee flavor without actually drinking coffee and I am happy
  • Earlier it was like 3 cups a day and one fine day d smell of it made me feel like yukkkkkkk n discovered m pregnant soon
  • I used to drink 3 cups a day. Now it makes me sick. I cannot have any caffeine. No chocolate, no cola or soda. All of it makes me throw up. My doctor told me I could have 1 cup a day.
  • I drink half caf or decaf 1-2 cups a day the doctor says that's fine! Couldn't give it up working the night shift!
  • I drink coffee in the morning with breakfast and sometimes I want Coke or Pepsi but I feel guilty so I do not. I have been drinking a lot water.

  • I love my coffee! Have been drinking decaf instead since I found out, with an occasional chai tea latte or such. Bigby will make any drink with decaf coffee! Was so excited to find this out :)
  • Not a coffee drinker, but I have a big mug of green tea every morning. My OB said to limit caffeine to 200 my per day, but to avoid it during first trimester if you had a history of miscarriage (since they're not totally sure on the effect of caffeine on early pregnancy). Now that I am having monster headaches, she actually recommends that I get some caffeine to try and alleviate the pain.

She said to avoid all diet sodas though, since they don't fully know what the fake sugars do to the baby (though my mom drank 4 diet pepsis every day when she was pregnant and we turned out okay..for the most part ;) ).
  • I drink one cup of coffee in the morning and that is it. If I want a soda, I will drink ginger ale which is caffeine free. better to drink a cup of coffee than some of those herbal teas that are not good for the baby. Did you know that chrysanthemum tea is really bad for pregnant women? I didn't until I read about it.
  • I hate coffee and soda burns my throat so no problems for me in this department... Tea on the other hand, man, so difficult for me to limit myself with my green tea because I love the stuff!
  • I quit caffeine and smokes when I first found out about this little surprise :) And shockingly enough I did not get caffeine headaches. I was drinking Redbull, coffee and Coke all day everyday haha. But Coffee and cigarettes go hand in hand so I quit it all cold turkey. The past few weeks I started drinking a little coffee in the mornings and a Coke either at lunch or with dinner. The way I justify my little vice is by making sure my water/juice intake for the day out weighs my caffeine :) My doctor told me I'm doing great!
  • I don't seem to get nervous about the consumption of caffeine especially because I'm a one time NICU nurse and we gave caffeine to babies who would drop their heart rate...usually premises...so its gotta somewhat good for the little peanuts ticker in womb no?
  • I didn't drink any caffeinated drinks for the first trimester. I then slowly allowed myself a soda, tea or half a cup of coffee. Only one serving per day. It also really helps if I'm constipated. Unfortunately my favorite drinks are caffeinated. Can't wait to drink as much as I want later.

I went from 3-4 cups a day to nothing in my first trimester. Only did that because of all the caffeine and pregnancy stuff I read. I even switched to non caffeine soda. I jusy had an appt last week (Im 16 weeks) and my doctor told me I shouldnt have quite like that with all my headaches recently coming up. Nurse said to do a tylenol with my coffee, but I chose to just do my one cup a day or every other day without tylenol. My life feels better now haha. Im still doing noncaffeine sodas though because sprite tastes so much better than anything else right now! :-)

And of course lots of water with lemon or propel!
