20 week ultrasound wrong?

Had my 20 week ultrasound yesterday and I wanted to find out the sex of our baby. My husband is completely against finding out; The doctor had to quickly look for me while my husband kept his eyes closed. Baby had its legs closed together, and our doctor kept trying to get the baby to move. He mouthed "boy", but I couldn't see it at all. With my last pregnancy it was so easy to see that he was a boy. I asked the doctor to please look again and he did, and said "pretty sure"... what does that mean? It looked like nothing to me. I don't know if maybe I'm just in denial and hoping he is wrong because I really want a girl, or if there is a chance he is wrong? With my son, he said he was 90% sure it was a boy. Any thoughts? I will be happy for a healthy baby either way, but am I a bad person for wanting him to be wrong?

Re: 20 week ultrasound wrong?

  • If your doctor said that he is pretty sure then I would get the baby boy clothes out of the closet and start preparing for your new baby boy. Congrats

There's always a chance they could be wrong. If you're at worried pay for an elective ultrasound. Otherwise trust your doctor.
  • I trust my doctor. His facial expressions when he said pretty sure was what put me on the fence. It wasn't a positive pretty sure. More like a pretty sure with a question mark at the end.
  • I'm not sure if you are a bad person for wanting the opposite sex. I mean, passing disappointment, if you had your heart set on a girl-- is not uncommon. It's if you are getting seriously upset about it that I start to side-eye.

You could always pay at a boutique if you want to double check. There is always a chance that the doctor is wrong-- but I highly doubt it.

What troubles you about having a boy?

  • I have a boy already and a little girl. She really wants a sister and I know she's going to be sad when she finds out it's a brother. I was hoping for a girl so that she's not the only girl in our family. She has all boy cousins and none of them want anything to do with her. Just heartbreaking to see and I always try to make her feel special and do special activities with her. It's not the same though. I had the same situation growing up and was hoping it would be different for her.

This goes both ways, what about your son being the boy in the family? You knew when you got pregnant that there was a 50% chance of a boy.
  • I trust my doctor. His facial expressions when he said pretty sure was what put me on the fence. It wasn't a positive pretty sure. More like a pretty sure with a question mark at the end.

His facial expression was probably because you questioned him and asked him if he was sure. He was trying to look and quietly mouth to you what you were having while your husband had his eyes closed. You then questioned him. I'm sure if I was the doc I would have looked at you not all grins and smiles when questioned. However like PP nothing is 100% until you deliver. You have one of all ready and your daughter will be fine, it's a 50/50

  • With my first, the doctor said boy. He never showed me the money shot. He was wrong. If you didn't see it with your own eyes, I'd be hesitant to believe. Not that your doctor is bad, but it doesn't sound like he gave it a solid look. Mistakes happen.

The fact that you refer to your baby's ultrasound as a "money shot" disturbs me. There are so many ways to describe viewing the ultrasound but this term is pornographic. 0.0

The maturity around here is aweful! Use the proper terminology- "money shot" is a terrible term for a baby's genitalia.
    Horrible term!  [-(

FYI - it's not only a pornographic term. It's also used in the regular movie industry, referring to the shot that cost the most money or is very important.
So, money shot isn't always a dirty term. I stand by my usage.

So a shot of a penis/vagina is what is most important? Gotcha.

I think that is a pretty important shot..... Qualifies as a money shot.

How a child pees isn't that important and the term is still offensive and ridiculous to use. Glad to see you have your priorities straight though.

  • Is it wrong that I completely expected this poster to not GAF about using a term like that for a baby's private areas? Lord only knows what she says to or about a toddler's body parts. I mean, what if someone overhears you use that type of language about a baby? The wrong person hears that & it could end badly.

Oops, my bad. I thought I was on a message board with adults. Must've ended up in Kindergarten instead.

Is anyone else sad that someone with this maturity level will be responsible for raising a human being?
I hope it makes you even sadder to know that I will be responsible for 3 kids soon!! And we might even have a fourth!!

  • I wouldn't worry about your daughter being disappointed about having a brother. I am one of 3 and the only girl, I loved it. I tend to get along with guys more than girls but it does come in handy. If I ever need something fixed, I have enough guy friends or brothers that will do it for me.
With one girl there shouldn't be this big competition. My sil and her sis literally are having a race to see who can get pregnant 1st, they had to out do eachothers weddings, and engagement rings. That wasn't an issue for me and my bros.
  • You guys have no sense of humor! You might find that term offensive but I will chime in and say that you're not speaking for all of mankind. I didn't give the term "money shot" a second thought.

Wait-- so we are supposed to find a grown woman using an off-color, inappropriate term for a baby's genitals amusing? One that is usually & most often reserved for adult males ejaculating on a female's body?

I'm sorry, I have an awesome sense of humor. This-- this is not at all humorous. Can you please, explain it to me like I'm five? Because I don't see something like that used to describe a baby's parts at all funny.

It's not a cutsie term like preggo or totes-- I can't believe we are being labeled as sticks in the mud for not joking about porno terms & ultrasounds. Words matter, man.

  • @PrimRoseMama‌ -I didn't mean to offend you, honestly. I just feel like the outrage level is a bit high for the perceived offense. @tinktink20‌ already clarified that there is more than one definition of "money shot" and can be googled easily. I don't think it's fair to assume someone meant to bring porno references into the conversation.

  • Well that speaks volumes. And it's pretty shitty that, going by your definition, your child's genitals were the most important part of the anatomy scan. I must have missed at memo while making sure my baby had all her vital organs and was growing properly. Silly me.

I do believe that for many women, seeing whether baby is a boy or girl, is a pretty huge deal. Of course everyone wants their baby healthy, but the bonus is seeing the money shot - the picture of what's between the legs.
  • It's probably a boy. The techs do this for a living and have experience to tell the difference. But hey , they are human and can make mistakes. I know two women that were told they were having the opposite gender of what they were really having. So hey, maybe there's a small chance but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

    This.
When I hear money shot I, i think of a prize winning photo. Or someone scoring a point in sports. Different strokes for different folks. I would like to emphasize it was not @tinktink20 that mentioned porn in the first place.

  • Oh my goodness-- it's inappropriate to refer to a baby's crotch shot as a money shot. It's not winning a prize or even a legit reason to squee. It's like any other organ.

"Money shot" in reference to a penis or vulva is most certainly pornographic. Because it is. Add to this that you are talking about a baby. Is this real life? Like, there are really people out there that would argue that this nonsense is completely ok? /:) [-(

Oh my get over yourself. Right now the gender of my baby is a boy and if he decides when he's older that He would like to be the opposite gender then he can and I'd be okay with that. . But as of right now, his gender is a boy. Thats all that needs to be said. I've seen previous replies from you correcting other women for using that term . Do what's best for you. You don't need to be correcting others. That's not even the point of this thread.
