Starting solids with BF baby

Hi All
I have a really stupid question about this...it says to mix cereal with milk but I'm on a schedule of pumping already and don't pump at night and that's when I want to begin feeding my LO cereal. How do you all begin introducing cereal with breastmilk combined? And how do you know how many feedings to give your LO If you breastfeed on demand up to this point? So overwhelmed!

Our doc said to just start with a spoonful or two once a day and work up from there following baby's cues. I always mix the cereal with already pumped milk. I also usually start with BFing her, then spoon feed the cereal right after. Good luck!

On the other post regarding solids it was talked about how cereal can cause constipation so be on the look out. I pump and nurse when I'm home and my LO got constipated from the cereal. I was going to try the oatmeal cereal instead but am now thinking about just going right into sweat potatoes. If your LO doesn't poop one day then don't give cereal that day. Just my observation/opinion.

I have read that you start with one feeding a day (at night) for about a week or two and then you can add a morning feeding. I have also read to make the cereal with a good amount of Breast milk so you have a more liquid consistency and then gradually make it more thick as time goes on.

I nurse around 5 then feed around 6 then bath then nurse before bed.

So do you girls that pump find that you have enough milk to pump extra just for feedings? I'm already on a pumpin schedule for my Lo who is in daycare and needs bottles and don't think I will have enough supply to pump even more for these feedings. Any suggestions?

I have enough supply but I have been pumping and nursing since day one to stock up because I have always worried about not having enough or drying up. One thing that helps me is pumping first thing in the morning and not nursing. I pump almost 2 bottles at this time. So there's my extra for food. Try extending your pumping time a bit, eating oatmea or pumping in the morning or at night.

I already pump at that time for bottles for daycare each day. Blondee do you have enough supply stash that you don't need to use that pumped milk for that same day like I do?
  • Options
Yes I have like 2 months supply. I'm really not sure how it happened. I eat oatmeal every morning. I pump every 3-4 hours or nurse. When I was trying to boost supply for extra milk I would nurse once then the next time nurse and pump a couple minutes after. I pump 20-25 min.

There's no nutritional value in cereal. Skip it. You can go right to soft veggies in large chunks or pureed if you like.

I pump right before bed and get the 2oz I need for the cereal. I also pump on the weekends in between feedings and first thing in the morning.

I'll also be skipping the cereal in favor of avocados or sweet potato. As pp said, there really isn't any nutritional value to the cereal.

Thanks all! I've figured out that I can pump and don't need that much for cereal so I found the time and it's all good. Now what if you have a baby that you fed for the FIrSt time who is so hungry she literally grabbed the spoon from me and fed herSELF!! It was almost creepy lol she's six months and beyond ready. But how much is too much and should I go by her cues even if it's a lot of food?

I skipped cereal and went straight to veggies for both my kids. Since I have 2 Los with limited time I just add water to thin out her purées. It's so much easier than worrying about pumping milk.

Just keep feeding her. Babies are smarter than some adults. They stop eating when they are full.

Water is fine to mix with cereal and veggies. I skipped cereal bc it caused constipation and there's no nutritional value also if bsby eats a lot you won't have to worry as much about constipation with fruit and veggies

I am not doing cereal. It's really only to get them use to food. It has not really nutrition to it.

This is our schedule too. I have a friend that does the cereal between a 9 am and noon feeding and then does the baby food between the 5pm and 8 pm feedings.

I actually had to change his feeding to around 12 noon to give his tummy more time to process. I stopped cereal and did sweet potatoes and now pears. When I was feeding him to close to bed time he was gassy and cranky.
