Has anyone tried evening primrose oil to induce labor? Did it work? How much did you take a day? How early did you take it? I wanna know everything lol please and thank you
Idk about primrose! But I have been drinking red raspberry leaf tea since 30 weeks. Some swear by it and others thinks it's a load of bs. All I know is it tastes great and is nice before bedtime.
Yeah I'm due March 10, but my doctor said I could start taking it at 35 weeks ( which I will be tomorrow ), I'm having a lot of problems with my pregnancy, thats why. I've heard about the red rasberry leaf tea and didnt know if i'd like it or not. i'd hate liquids lol.
Raspberry leaf tea is a general uterine tonic, not an effective way to induce labor. I really would wait until closer to your due date so baby has enough time to finish developing.
I think she was just asking if anyone had any experience with it, which is what this board is for, to just hear from other moms. I took it with my first around 38 weeks, You don't take it orally you shove a gel cap up your hooha. I did one before bedtime, but you have to wear a pad cause in the morning - well its gross. Who knows if it works. I delivered at exactly 39 weeks. But I was also vigilant about going to acupuncture and the chiropractor which my midwife said attributed to my fast and easy labor. I'm due March 11 and I may start to take it again around the same time (38 weeks), I dont want to chance being any earlier than that.
I just can't even believe how many women are trying to make their babies come early. Especially since we've had so many premies! What kind of dr gives the okay to try and start things that are supposed to induce labor at 35 weeks?? My dr told me the other day if I went into PTL at 35 weeks like I did with my son he wouldn't stop it and I wasn't okay with that. I had a high risk pregnancy last pregnancy too (GD, IUGR, and my son had a limb difference) and my doctor never even brought up the possibility of induction until I was close to being full term.
A baby needs to stay in the womb for as long as possible. Obviously there are reasons to induce early or do a c section but you should never be taking anything to try to deliver the baby early just because you are uncomfortable or impatient! Sheesh! This is unbelievable
No one has told her unreasonable times to begin taking anything to bring on preterm labor. 38 weeks is the normal time to start taking primrose oil from what I could find on the interwebzzz. I don't believe @MommyKe is trying to risk preterm labor. I think she is just interested in obtaining information about an oil and if any users have used it and when.
I think when the regs were banned the old ways of the community were meant to die off with them.
The board was awesome. I miss it. Now it's just sad.
Yes, the old ways...like intelligent conversation. Definitely disappeared along with most of the "regs", aka the community. Some of us are still here, by the way. I agree with you @Engineer81
OP, if your doctor ACTUALLY recommended you doing this at 35 weeks, then why do you need to ask anyone else? I for one wouldn't trust a doctor who "recommended" this kind of thing when my growing child isn't even at EARLY term yet.

Except that she said 35 weeks, not 38.
Also, if you really want it to work to assist in releasing prostaglandins (well, being turned into prostaglandins by your body) and ripening the cervix, you would begin taking it more like 34 weeks, then up your dosage later at about 38 weeks.
The issue is that it is in no way scientifically proven to induce labor. It's just not. This is why, if my doctor recommended that I use something such as primrose oil, I might question my doctor.
Because, you know, SCIENCE.
My doctor specifically told me not to use this. He said it is not based on science and to not waste my money. That was good enough for me.

She said her doctor recommended her starting it at 35 weeks which I don't see why any doctor in their right mind would try to induce labor prior to 37 weeks , when a baby is considered full term. I've never used it so don't know if it works, which from the sounds of these responses it doesn't, but starting it at 35 weeks is risking preterm labor if you ask me since there's still the possibility it could work.
Hey,F15 lurker here. Evening Primrose Oil is not meant to induce labor. It's meant to soften (efface) the cervix. You know, kind of help get your body ready. Taking it will not make you go into labor. Someone mentioned castor oil and I'd stay away from that. It's been known to cause the baby to pass away while still in the womb. I'm wondering exactly what your doctor told you? Because I highly doubt they told you it would induce labor. To me it's just a waste of money because it could,or could not, work.
I have no idea who the "regs" are or why they got banned. As someone mentioned primrose oil is not going in induce labor, it helps ready the body. And as I said, I didn't touch it until 38 weeks. As far as I have ever known a "community" is a place where people can seek advice and support - didn't realize this one was so different. I have no idea what happened in the past, but I'm confussed as to what types of questions and responses you are looking for? Medical questions are for doctors, simple questions are for uneducated people, anything inbetween should just be googled. So what's left for these community boards? I thought she was just asking if anyone had any experience with using primrose oil, from a community of mothers and mothers to be. I can't give medical advice, I didn't tell her to do anything to harm her baby, I just gave my experience. That's what I thought this community was about - again apaprently I was mistaken.
I used evening primrose oil but not until around 38 weeks. I had my baby at 39 weeks 2 days. I don't know that it really did anything but I will probably give it a whirl again in a few weeks. Personally I don't think it's smart to try anything to "induce" your labor whether it be primrose oil, castor oil, reflexology (with the purpose of starting labor), or whatever else there is out there until you are at term which is after 38 weeks. These things aren't guaranteed to work so maybe it does, maybe it doesn't but why would you take the chance before term?
I'm here because I'm pregnant and due in march. @Peledreamsofrain I'm never snarky or rude to anyone. I would say most of my posts are about being as supportive and helpful as I can be.

I'm sorry, but do you honestly view the statement that I quoted as either helpful or supportive? The only thing I can see is yet another dig at the women who still use the board after most left.
I don't have any experience with it...can't tell you much! I wouldn't do anything to induce early labor though, the longer baby is in the healthier baby will be. (If you don't have serious complications, that is) I know it's hard right now but just remember it's not much longer till your due date.
Glad you guys could find it in your hearts to give the "new" bump a shot!
These types of thinly veiled rude comments are hindering my ability to enjoy this site and are clearly a TOU violation. Hopefully the mods are paying attention.

You act like all the regs were banned or something. The only ones banned were the ones who wanted to get banned and purposely said things to get that done. There are plenty of us still here. It's nice that you want to play queen of the mountain and all, but any time is a great time to stop putting down our community.

What "problems with your pregnancy" could you have that a Dr would say it was okay to start using this at 35 weeks without suggesting a c section or induction? Please let your baby stay in as long as possible. I have problems with my preganancy but the docs want her to stay put AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.
For the love I just don't get it. Help me understand people.

You are totally right. I am currently a resident of the ante partum wing at a hospital about an hour away from home. All of these women here have problematic pregnancy and have even been admitted to the hospital to get themselves to term. Many of them have children at home they can't be with.
Add me to the "my god does pregnancy suck" club. But I still don't think it's worth trying to force labor to come sooner than it supposed to. IMO any doctor who would recommend that you start taking anything that could "induce" labor at 35 weeks is probably someone you shouldn't be listening to. If a doctor really thinks that you need to be in labor, they'll induce you medically.

Especially considering 35 weeks is the earliest that a baby *might* not need the NICU.

I, too find @erwallace089's comments inflammatory and they're lessening my enjoyment of this community. What a coincidence.
