You are the kindest group of online women I've ever "met." Thank you. Here's the update:
Last night was rough but thankfully DH was here with me. Had a horrible painful experience with the IV. It started throbbing worse and worse and took the nurse forever to come in. Turns out it was bent in my vein. She took it out but I was hysterical crying by then. Convinced her to ask my MFM if I could just keep it out and take oral antibiotics. Approved! Had another set of monitors early this morning and again an hour ago showing both sweet heart beats and felt kicking for the first time afterward.
MFM came back this morning. Happy to hear no more fluid loss. Wants transvaginal US on Tuesday to check fluid and cervix. Wants to move me to a better room. Agreed I can go home Tuesday to stay on bed rest and then back at 24 weeks if US looks good.
Never had fluid tested bc they said it's too early to show up on those strips. Mentioned the blue dye procedure you talked about but also agreed too risky bc it's like an amnio.
So, sitting here and waiting, talking to the babies, singing to them (hope outsiders don't think I'm a loon), and praying.
I'm glad they approved your for the oral antibiotics, and happier still that you saw two good heartbeats, and the leaking has stopped. I'm surprised they couldn't check the fluid. I ruptured at 20w1d, and they looked at a sample under a microscope to see if it made a fern pattern. Maybe your doc doesn't perform that test, but I thought the "fern test" was common.
I was totally singing to my LOs last night. I swear it kept them still so their heartbeats could be picked up on the monitor. Maybe I'm imagining things, but I'd like to think they liked their mom's amazing renditions of show tunes, simon & garfunkel and DMX .

This makes absolutely no sense. They swab your pad, labia, cervix etc basically they can swab anything and perform the test. The blue dye test is nothing at all like an amnio. It sounds like they have no idea what they are talking about.
My pads got swabbed with my last pg when my placenta was abrupting and they were able to do both tests.
The pH test involves sampling vaginal fluid to see how acidic or alkaline it is. Normal pH for vaginal fluid is between 4.5 and 5.5, and normal pH of amniotic fluid usually falls between 7.0 and 7.5. (When measuring pH, the higher the number, the more alkaline the substance.) If a sample of your vaginal fluid is more alkaline than normal vaginal pH, then it is very likely that the membranes have ruptured and amniotic fluid has leaked into the vagina.
The Nitrazine test involves placing small amounts (a drop or two) of vaginal fluid onto paper strips prepared with Nitrazine dye. A chemical reaction occurs and the strips change color, indicating the pH of the vaginal fluid. If the color shows the pH is greater than 6.5, it's likely the membranes have ruptured. False readings can occur, however. Women with blood-tinged mucus, for example, can test positive on the Nitrazine test because blood has a pH closer to amniotic fluid than vaginal fluid. Some vaginal infections can also increase the pH of fluid in the vagina, and so can recent intercourse, because semen has a high pH.

@luvboston she wasn't talking about the nitrazine...I had suggested a tampon test where they actually instill blue dye into the amniotic sac and then you wear a tampon to see if it turns blue. It's helpful when the rest of the testing is inconclusive

I was going to share my understanding of the blue dye test, but @Ecarabeo217 beat me to it.
My MFM told me about this option when I had 8 straight "dry" days. He suggested its a possible test to see if the rupture had sealed itself (in other words, to rule out the presence of a leak). In his words, blue dye would be injected into the gestational sac, using a needle similar to the one used for amniocentesis, and the patient would then wear a tampon and look for signs of blue dye.
My MFM didn't seem to keen on it, though, because the process can increase risk for a new rupture from the injection site. (Funny story - I declined an amnio, even though I'm an ancient 38 yr old with a history of loss carrying twins, mainly because I didn't want to risk a rupture. Ha Ha Ha. At least I saved myself a co-pay, I guess).
Anyway, I just wanted to say that @starlightgator 's MFM's stance on the blue dye test is similar to that of my MFM. The fern test, however, - they seem to differ on that.
@AMShark Yes. Thank you. The weirdest thing though. I asked my MFM if the leak could have sealed itself. He said the chances of that happening are the same as us winning the lottery. Yikes.

Hey, someone's gotta win the lottery. True, that's not the type of luck that I usually have (obviously), but it's not a 0% chance.
My world is such a flippin roller coaster.Just spoke to doc about today's US. Most most most important is to reduce stress and even recommended meditating. Fluid is good but cervix is shortening which is not good at all. Wants me to stay in hospital but can go to a more comfortable room.
From what I've read, one of the reasons they don't automatically do a lot of cervix monitoring is that some women's cervices simply vary in shape over time. If it was only a little bit shorter, it may just have been a small fluctuation, or even measurement error. Sending lots of good thoughts that all is well to you. ((hugs))

@Justone13 Thank you! Just had the girls' heartbeats checked and they are good: 147 and 163. Still have a slow leak of fluid, but doc said it can replenish. Babies are moving a lot which is a good sign. Basically, just trying to build routines and learn how to be stress free on bedrest. I'm 22w1d so we are really pushing for 24, and after. New room is much better and I've very blessed that it's a single (sorry @amshark). Have had an outpouring of kind texts and phone calls, even the president of my school sent a really nice gift bag. One day at a time and actually starting to read for pleasure again.
@starlightgator such an awesome update! I'm so glad you and the girls are doing well! I think @amshark is knitting? Maybe you could start that? Sounds like your doctor has a good plan for now. Stay positive and stress free!

I'm totally knitting. I'm thinking of uploading a progress pic soon - I've made it to my 5th color, but only 2 rows in.
I'm lucky enough that I can still work full time on my laptop - which means my knitting has to take a back seat - but how could I possibly complain, when I've been getting paid full time for most of the past 8 weeks (minus a couple of days while I was waiting for clearance from HR).

Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive. Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)
