I would love to take part in a check in - I have been pretty quiet on the board since I joined shortly after the BFP. Most of my questions have been answered, so I never felt the need to create my own post. I was just diagnosed today and would love to talk with other moms going through the same experience. It has taken me off guard since I failed the 1 hour by 1 measly point. Please don't shun me for being underactive on TB until now : )
Ladies--I am personally bowing out of creating the weekly GD check in as I am not as active on TB as I was previously. Please continue to post. I'll check in when I can.
I too am interested if I fail my 3 hr test on monday. I found out today, Friday, that I failed the 1 hr test with a 160. I'm hoping it was because I had some sweets earlier in the morning and the sugar was just hanging around a little bit. I was told to fast 8 hrs and prior to that I'm going to limit my carbs very much the day before. I really don't want to have GD. I like my sweets too much! LOL
For those of you with experience or have already been diagnosed this time around, what extra monitoring does the doctor do for you? I know I would have to monitor my blood sugars and change my diet. The only perk to me would be more ultrasounds since I had severe preeclampsia and HELLP with my son which lead to an emergency csection at 31 weeks. With my first pregnancy I was worried about GD since I'm overweight and I ended up without that but 2 other much more serious issues. This time around I was worried about HELLP and pree reoccuring and I may have GD lol. I actually lost 10 lbs at the beginning of the pregnancy and now I'm up only about 3-4 lbs at 26 weeks so I was surprised actually. Hopefully it was a fluke.
I failed my 1 hour and will take the 3 hour on Monday. They said I have to fast after midnight but I assumed I could still have water just like when having other blood work done. From other posters it seems like I can't???? Does anyone know for sure?

Other than blood sugar monitoring and the extra ultrasounds, I haven't had any other monitoring. I do meet with a diabetes counselor. Small changes to my diet and metformin have been enough for me to keep things under control.
I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to weight, so that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with it. I think you're more likely to have GD if you're overweight, but not being overweight doesn't rule it out.

I don't know for sure, but I would assume water is fine. Is there a nurses line you can call?
I also failed my 1 hour with 144. I'm taking my 3 hour on Friday. I'm really worried about failing that one. They also told me I was anemic. I've been feeling lightheaded the last couple of days, so that's gotten me really discouraged that I'm going to have gestational diabetes. I know it could be the anemia too, but I'm feeling pretty down about it.

No, but I will call the on-call dr. tomorrow just to make sure. I never would have thought anything about it if some of the PP hadn't talked about being so thirsty or having bottled water waiting for after the test.

I had ice chips while I was waiting. Not too much water but kept nausea at bay. Hope you can have something!
I was diagnosed and I love this thread I'm in my 3rd trim. And is very nervous since this is my first baby scared she may be a big baby just diagnosed a week ago
Soooo halfway through my 1 hr test today, I puked and almost passed out at the docs office today. Do you think that's a bad sign I won't pass it? They're making me take the test again next week but I'm realllllly nervous now. My mom had GD when she was pregnant with me, so I don't think the chances of not having it are in my favor.

I took a zofran before my one hour. Ask the doc if they can prescribe you one!

Unfortunately, I do think it's a bad sign that you almost passed out at the 1 hour test. Once I was diagnosed with GD I realized that I was feeling "off" for a few weeks. I would get weak and shaky at times. I assumed it was just a function of being 40 years old and 6 months pregnant.
However, at the three hour test I felt the same way and realized I would fail. I didn't throw up, but I felt almost like I'd been poisoned. I thought I was going to have to leave at the two hour mark, I felt so bad.
I've also only gained 3 pounds during this pregnancy and I wonder if that was also a sign. Trust me, that is not a brag. I started out overweight. Not, OMG!! I need to lose 10 pounds to fit into my bikini this summer overweight, but medically obese. I was eating what I want during this pregnancy, so I probably should have known something was not right.
Still, you never know. There isn't much point worrying, until you get your results. Even then, you can do what you need to do for three months. We all have it in us to be that strong for our LO's sake.
Hi ladies! Looks like I might be joining your group so hopefully I can get some tips and food ideas from you guys. I just found out I failed the 1hour test and will be doing the 3hour next week. The nurse said to have a half of sandwich with a glass of milk the night before and a snack later that night.. Nothing but water after the snack. Good luck to all of you!!
I failed my 3 hour last Monday. I have an endocrinologist appt on Thursday but no one has said anything about a nutritionist. I also see my OB and my perinatalogist (specialist) this week so I will ask. Trying to develop my own diet using Dr. Google has been frustrating so far and since I don't have my testing kit yet I can't even tell how well it is working.
Anyone have any specific "trigger foods" that you thought you could eat but can't?
I found out two weeks ago that i had gd and was surprized. I thought i was the end of the world Because i had to give up my sweets and soda but it really hasnt been that bad. I dont like pricking my finger twice a day.bbu im getting use to it. Also i have found that I can eat almost anything as long as i use portion control with carbs. The only thing that has been really hard for me is eating three meals a day plus three snacks between each meal. I feel super full all the time. But i only have two months to go so i know i can hang in there.
I also found out a couple weeks ago I had GD. Although I did start off the pregnancy overweight and have a family history of diabetes, I was still sort of surprised I failed the three hour test. I didn't have any bad reactions at all during the test. I thought for sure I was going to get sick from fasting alone, but this didn't occur. Actually, I felt wide awake and felt fine the entire time! However, with reading my levels everyday, if I dont walk after I eat, my levels are almost always high, even if I barely eat any carbs. Although I dont mind walking, in fact I love it, it is kind of a pain in the butt when I want to have a lazy day.
I was diagnosed with GD two weeks ago now after failing both glucose tests. I don't mind checking my blood sugars, it's more annoying to remember to do it two hours after eating. What I am finding difficult is that most carbs trigger me to have a high sugar. Any sort of bread or pasta or rice triggers me over 130 after two hours even when I eat them with lots of protein and some veg. I know I need to eat some carbs and you hear all about how important it is for baby to get carbs but I am finding it hard to eat them when I know my next reading is going to be high. Anyone in similar situations??? Also would love meal ideas as I don't really enjoy cooking a whole lot thanks
I was recently diagnosed and never, ever had any symptoms or issues. Didn't mind the 1 hour or 3 hour test. I only failed the 1 hour test by 1 point but failed all the tests except for the fasting test during the 3 hour. I just got my meter and so far so good. It's not as bad or scary as I thought it'd be. My fasting and after breakfast numbers are awesome. Last night after dinner and after lunch today I was at 132. I know I should be <120 but I know that anything consistently over 150 is really bad and I need to call the doctor.
As far as weight goes, I've gained 17 pounds but had a good weight and BMI pre pregnancy. Baby is measuring right on schedule and that's what is important.

Are you in a position to walk 20 mins after some or most of your meals? Exercise can help bring down your numbers.
I saw the endocrinologist today for my first visit after being diagnosed last week. She already put me on insulin because all my numbers were high during my 3 hour, even my fasting. I am to give 5 units at night. I'm hoping that's all I will need. However my lunch and dinner numbers today were both between 137-140 2 hours after eating. She made it sound like it was super important to keep it under 120. I have high blood pressure too and will likely be on bed rest soon which won't help. I had a sono yesterday though and LO is still perfect in every way :-).
I unfortunately work all night shifts as a nurse so most of the time I am up working and walking anyway. The times I am not working and eat a meal are usually when I have to sleep during the day. Such a bummer. You would think snacking healthy and more often would be easier but I am just so nervous about my sugars. I am trying what I can. I am going to see what my Dr thinks...appt Monday thank goodness.
Yes, you can have water up til you drink the yummy (sarcastic) drink. Then no water until after your last blood drawl. It's way tougher than the 1-hr test; at least for me.
I'm posting on this late, however I failed the 1 hour test earlier this
week with 148 on a 140 cut off. I just took the 3 hour test today and am anxiously waiting on
those results. I'm feeling pretty mad at myself and guilty for my eating habits up to this point... My food aversions haven't fully gone away and so I was eating pretty much whatever sounded good, which consisted of a lot of carbs-- ugh so dumb of me. Hopefully I didn't cause my little guy too much harm
Anyways, I would love to participate in a check in if I am diagnosed! Would love meal and snack ideas for sure!

It was different for me. They said I could only have small sips of water after my fasting period started. During the test the person who took my blood said I could have 4 ounces an hour. I would have passed out otherwise, I think.
@borgie05 it doesn't really matter about your diet leading up to GD. Yes, a better diet is better for you and the baby but really it's all about your placenta and how hard your pancreas has to work to overcome the hormones being pumped out of it. These hormones make you insulin resistant. Being over weight to start makes it more likely that you will get GD because being overweight also affects your insulin resistance but there are plenty of people who eat crappy and never get GD and plenty of extremely healthful eaters that do. Don't be too hard on yourself ! If you have failed the 3 hour just focus on making the right choices now... That's what is important.
Thanks @Ndm410... I'm not overweight or anything, but diabetes does run on my mom's side of the family. She actually had GD when pregnant with both my sister and I, so I was definitely nervous! Luckily, I passed the 3 hour. Still have been trying to improve the eating habits though! I normally eat really healthy, just have been having a rough time eating normal while pregnant. Hmmm thinking a general meal and snack thread might be helpful. I bet there is one, I'll go search now
