Gestational Diabetes--Avoiding Zombie Post

I searched gestational diabetes and I saw one or two specific threads from August and September (way before anyone was diagnosed and one more recently that had a little bit of drama. So to avoid dredging those up, I'll pose my question here:

It looks like we have at least some mom's diagnosed. Would any of those moms be interested in a weekly check in? Share meal ideas, snacks, other general info. I would be happy to start it. Just don't want to be there all by myself.

Re: Gestational Diabetes--Avoiding Zombie Post

  • I had it last pregnancy, but I still have to take my second glucose test for this pregnancy (I passed the one hour).

If I do have it, I think a weekly check in would be a great idea. I had absolutely zero support last time and would if found a check in helpful.

If I do have it, count me in.

  • I've got GD, although i don't have many exciting things to say or share, i'd definitely lurk at the least!
  • I just failed the 1hr yesterday and have the 3 hr tomorrow. If I fail and am diagnosed I'd def be interested in a weekly thread.
  • This may be a silly question but to those who failed the test, did you kind of know you failed before actually getting the results? After you eat desserts do you ever feel kind of off? My one friend knew she failed immediately because of how shakey she felt after drinking the drink. I have my test on Friday and haven't thought much of it until now.

Same boat for me. Just found out I failed the 1 hour this morning and will be taking the 3 hour. If the same happens, I am interested also.

@sweetseltz I had no idea/never crossed my mind I would fail. My pregnancy has not matched what I thought was a common "path" to GD. Fingers crossed the 3 hour is a better result.

Not really. When I found out last time it started clicking how certain foods made me feel after I ate/drank them but when I initially found out I was surprised. Having already taken the 1hr at 12 weeks (I passed this time) I felt exactly the same after drinking it as with my last. Sick to my stomach and sluggish. I'm not huge on sweets so that drink is torture for me.
  • I don't have GD, but due to some medication I'm on, which increases insulin resistence, I'm on Metformin and being closely monitored as if I have GD. On the plus side, I got to skip the glucose test and I get monthly ultrasounds. On the not so plus side, I have to prick my finger 4 times a day. I'm getting used to it, though.

So far, my A1C levels have been great...but I have found, over the holidays, which is when I started daily testing, that my numbers have varied wildly. I see the diabetes counselor on the 7th, and will see what she thinks. Might just be that crazy holiday food.
  • I had no idea I failed either test. I don't really seem to have reactions to sugar or carb-filled foods. It's the MSG or artificial sweetener foods that give me a noticeable problem.

  • Just got a call from my OB, I failed the one hour test she said my numbers came back high 141 so I gotta take the 3 hour test yikes, I so wanna a support system if I I fail the 3hrs too, good luck to everyone who's will be repeating the test like me.
  • I was tested early because of my family history with diabetes. I failed both test and have been seeing a specialist since late November. I would be interested in a weekly check in
  • Just out of curiosity for those who failed, did you have any symptoms that would lead you to believe you would fail the test and have GD?

  • I just took my one hour today so haven't gotten the results back yet but I'm in the same boat--if I have it, I'd love a support group. Thank you for starting this!

  • How long does it take to get the results?
  • Haven't tested yet. I have a family history of diabetes, so I wouldn't be surprised if I test positive for GD. I'd like to join, as well, if I hear the bad news.
  • I failed the screening because I was starving and ate junk between my OB and the lab. But I barely failed at 157, when you need less than 140. I did the 3 hour and aced with flying colors.

Hope those of you who have to do the three hour have better luck than the screening.

  • The reference numbers on my lab work say between 70 and 120 is normal range. I had a 133 with my 1hr. I didn't think it was going to fail so I def didn't feel yucky or anything. I'm sitting in the lab right now- 15 minutes into the 3 hour test and maybe it's the 12 hours of fasting but the glucola is making me feel pukey more so than the 1 hr.

I felt the exact same way. It was the fasting that made it so difficult. I was so thirsty. I would have taken a second bottle of glucola at one point!

  • I had GD with my first DS, and failed the 1hr challenge at 10.5 weeks with this one, so I've been monitored since then. My numbers so far have been really good though, including my A1C. At the moment I am supposed to check A1C again in January and March. I also have an U/S at basically every appointment to check growth. Hopefully numbers stay down, but OB is worried they may jump in 3rd tri. I will try to follow any GD threads, but posting is hard for me on a regular basis, so I don't know if I'll be involved every week.

  • Ok ladies. It looks like some decent interest. I'm thinking maybe I'll post on Sunday. That way it'll be around the same time as the meal planning thread. Hopefully, between the two it'll keep us on track. I'm planning on doing some research on meals and snacks today and tomorrow AM. Unfortunately, I'm just using common sense at this point. The nutritionist is out of the office until Thursday and who knows how long it will take me to get in for an appointment. Hopefully, some research and a couple of cook books will cover me until then!

  • I have GD for the third time. I have been bad with being consistent on the boards lately, but I am open to a weekly check in. Thanks for offering to do it. :)

  • How long does it take to get the results?

I took mine on 12/24 (offices were closed 12/25-12/28) and I had my results 12/29 which I thought was pretty damn fast! I was convinced I had failed since I had eaten a cinnamon roll before my appt., but I passed (although I don't recommend doing that).

  • I am interested. I had it with my first pregnancy and am waiting for the results of my test that I took Wednesday. I will not be surprised if I have it.

  • Go Tuesday for my 3 hour... my 1 hour was 141 which according to my results online it says normal but apparently not since I have to take the 3 hour :(
  • Good luck @kier23‌ Have a bottle of water and a snack in your purse waiting for when when you are done.

  • I would be interested in a weekly check in. I had GD with DS#1 and have had GD with this pregnancy since October. Lately my 1 hour breakfast numbers have been high so I'm looking forward to seeing what other people are having success with :-)

The goal is under 120 typically. I hope you pass your next test!

I was supposed to do mine on Friday but had to reschedule since we were still out of state. Still dreading it!
  • I am 26 weeks with my 3rd child, I had GD with my first who is now 10, I didn't have it with my 2nd now 7, I took the 1 hour test back in September and failed, So I had to take the 3 hour in October. In late October I was diagnosed with GD with this pregnancy. I went to the GD dietician, a they have me a book, change the number of times a day i am suppose too check my sugar levels and told me to eat 3 meals a day and 3 snacks a day, my 3 meals should have 30 to 45 grams of carbs, and my snacks should be 15 to 30 grams. And to eat less fruits, no juice, and more veggies, and protein. A single piece of bread is 15 grams of carbs. I Will eat a hamburger with everything but the bun so
i can have fries.... Its a give and take. GL everyone, also I had gained 10lb the first 3months once i switched my diet i lost those 10 lb, now at 26 weeks i have gained a total of 8lb....

Thank you for that general information. I know it does not replace my doctor advice but it gives me a place to start while waiting for my appointment. It's pretty much what I discovered from researching online. My weight--for once in my entire life--has not been an issue during pregnancy. I had some extra padding ore-pregnancy so I am guessing that im is why my gain has been minimal. I fruitlessly hoped that since I had minimal gain I would not be diagnosed. All well. I started using My Fitness Pal to track my food so I can keep on top of carb intake. I'm hoping that will help--especially to have the doc take a peek at my dietician appointment to see where adjustments can be made.

I loveee zucchini ribbons! Such a delicious alternative to pasta! I don't have the vegetti but my julienne slicer does the same thing.
  • @specialsn0wflake‌ -- I used to just use my julienne peeler but I found that I couldn't quite julienne that middle wet seas layer so I was wasting A LOT! What a difference on this thing! $14.99 at BB&B and used a 20% off coupon. Best investment ever!

  • I've been on two kinds of insulin since 9 weeks. 5 injections a day now and checking 4 times a day or more. I was considered prediabetic for the last 12 years so I was tested very early. If anyone fails their GTT I hope you are able to control it with diet.

I passed my 1 hour test. I completely expected to have GD and be in the weekly check in because of my family history, weight gain, etc. I am still going to lurk to get tips on a healthy diet. Good luck ladies
  • I just miserably failed my 1 hour test (over 180). I declined the 3 hour test because last time I did a 3 hour fasting glucose test I ended up barfing and passing out on the bathroom floor at the Doctors office. I'd rather not go through that again. The nurse agreed it would be best to go ahead and take GD precautions and start monitoring my blood sugar 4 times a day. Oh boy. Also, I'm measuring 3 weeks ahead. I don't know if it's related, but I just got a little more stressed out about this pregnancy.
  • I did pass!!!!! and just now seen this notification but I will be joining the new forces soon lol I need all my ladies
  • I failed my 1hr test today. I go in for another one next week. I would like to join this group also.
  • I just had my blood drawn for my 1 hour test, I would like a check in if I do get diagnosed. Definitely hoping I passed though :)
