It's Monday, but I have a dumb question:  before breastfeeding, do you wipe down the boob? Clean it?  Anything?  It feels kind of counterintuitive shoving my possibly dirty skinbag into another human's mouth.  I wash my hands before I eat finger foods, so that's kind of my logic here.  Not that my boobs make nearly as much contact with things as my hands do, but there's still sweat, bacteria, etc.

I did ask the question at my prenatal class and was told nope, since it may be a contaminant / irritate cracks. Was told just to wash down with water post feed, and stick with lanolin or BM and water while BFing.

No. Between the constant newborn feeds, growth spurts, and cluster feeds that would have been way too annoying. Your breasts aren't germ magnets ;)

  • Because I don't want to start my own thread, this question is going here.

Woke up this morning with nerve tingles that go down my right arm when I extend my elbow. In my mind, I probably slept on it weird- I've been waking up with numb hands and arms for the last month. It's uncomfortable, but doesn't hurt. Seems like one of those "pregnancy causes swelling, which is pinching a nerve" a la carpel tunnel. My insurance in a weird place right now or I'd make an apt with a chiropractor.

I mentioned it to my mom, who thinks I should call the midwife. I think it's not an emergency, I should wait a few days and see how it does before placing the call.

So two questions: anyone with weird nerve issues yet? Any suggestions on how to help it? I was thinking ice, but I don't know where to ice (elbow, shoulder, spine) to be beneficial.

And is it worth a call today?

I don't think it would hurt to call, just so they're aware of it.

I've had that kind of nerve pain before (not while pregnant) and the chiropractor had me ice my shoulder. Obviously, there are lots of different origins for it, so your pain could be coming from a different place. Maybe try icing each location today for 15 minute increments and see which gives you some relief? I hope you can get into the chiro soon!

I also had some numbness that showed up randomly in my left hand andlasted for a couple days. I could tell I still had good circulation (pink nail beds) so I attributed it to pregnancy-related swelling like you said. It went away on its own after two days. I personally never called my doctor because it wasnt bothering me much. You could call if it bothers you but I wouldnt really consider it an emergency as long as you still have circulation-aka your fingers arent pale or cold. As far as how to relieve it I'm afraid I dont have any ideas there :-/

Is this sarcasm, or unknowingly wrong info? The lol confuses me.

Nope the "what to expect when you're expecting" book states you're in your 7th month at 28 weeks..the lol was because it was kind of a funny question ;)
  • I believe this is what sharkfarts had posted.
  • Also with the whole pregnancy chart thing 2 of the weeks you really aren't pregnant because it's from the first day of your last period. So I normally subtract 2 weeks off of my date and see if that equals the month. Like I'm 27 weeks pregnant but technically have only been pregnant for 25 weeks if that makes sense.
  • Can we please? I have one, don't laugh. First time Mom and first pregnancy. How will I know I'm in labor? I have pains and feel pressure all the time. All anyone can say is "You'll just know!". I read that only about 30% of women have their water break on its own so I can't count on that as an indicator (plus what if I piss my pants and think it's my water?!) Stupidest question I've got!
From my experience, my contraction felt like gas pains...so much so I kept getting up and going to the bathroom (successfully) from 12:30am-3:45am until I finally called the L&D and the nurse said "honey, you're in early labor". I then asked "what should I do?" she said "i would take a warm shower and wait it out a bit, or come on in, but they may send you home for awhile". So I took a shower and labored until 6:00am then went in. My water never broke, the Dr. had to break it at about 11am.

Here is my stupid question. It's getting harder to see my areas for grooming. I'm beginning to get perplexed on how to keep myself neat. I googled this of course and they suggest Brazilian waxing. My question would then be how in the world would I get waxed if excess discharge is a side effect of pregnancy? I'm wearing panty liners daily. What have some of you resorted to? I'm only 26 weeks this week and I'm not ready to throw in the (trimmed) towel. Help.
I just do what I can.... it's a hack-job, but it's better than nothing and DH can deal. I refuse the wax. My lady-bits don't need that type of trauma..they have enough going on.

  • Here is my stupid question: so sperm/sex can help soften your cervix... And at the end of my pregnancy I was told to have as much as possible, but thinking of this now,..
And not being told no sex currently, how does the sex that your currently having (now at 28 weeks) not do the same thing it would do at 38/39/40 weeks? Meaning wouldn't it soften your cervix now?
  • To be honest my water broke and I though I had peed myself but it was multiple times I was "peeing" I called my mom and then my doctor after the contractions started for me it kind of feels like constipation cramps...I had the feeling of pooping when it was time to push out my first child
  • I would have the mother around for at least the 1st week, maybe the 2nd, especially if you're going to be alone. It's not because you're going to be "helpless"; it's just that you might really appreciate the extra support. Sleepless nights and days, breastfeeding, etc. may be a lot easier with someone else helping.
  • When you go into labor do you just go to L&D and have them call your doctor, or do you call your doctor and have them tell you to go to L&D? Or just show up and have the hospital call your doctors office?

Call your Dr or midwife first; follow his or her directions.

This is the story of my life! With my last pregnancy, too, I would have "pins and needles" all night long, constantly having to change positions. It's so uncomfortable and annoying, but I'm guessing pretty normal. Good luck!

According to my MW and everything I've read, if you don't have any preterm labor or other issues, no amount of sex, nipple stimulation, or other natural induction method is going to put you into labor if your body weren't already headed in that direction anyway.

I was told that my cervix was short, then I was told that it wasn't and it was fine... So after 8 weeks of no sex, my husband and I cautiously tried. Of course I'm still not allowed to orgasm, so I got nothing out of it. But at least we tried for some intimacy.
We weren't, however, told that we should use a CONDOM. So Saturday night we have sex, Monday I get my first positive ffn, Monday I get a repeat ffn which was positive too, and now I'm receiving my two doses of antenatal steroids and am in bedrest at home, on alert for any signs of preterm labor. I'm only 28w5d.
Now all I can do is pray an hope that she stays in there longer. Yes, there's no way for me know if it was his semen that caused this...But I can't help feeling stupid and horrible, and blame myself and hubby.
I don't know what to tell you; in my experience, it was better to use a condom. Or to just to suck it up and wait another 12 weeks to term. If you're not "at risk for preterm labor", then a lot of books and practitioners would say that sex at 28 weeks in a normal pregnancy is more than ok.
If this still gives you caution, ask your dr or midwife.
  • Background for my stupid question: my previous L&D experience involved an induction at 33 weeks. I was not dilated at all and they gave me a few doses of pitocin and cervidil. Contractions ended up starting very suddenly, were very intense, and moved to about 1 minute apart very quickly. This went on for a couple of hours, and my cervix was still only 2 cm dilated, so I ended up getting an epidural because I could not have handled those contractions for another hour, let alone the 8 more hours or so that nurses predicted the my cervix would need to hit the 10 cm mark.

So my dumb questions: is it "normal" to have contractions that are ridiculously intense and close together, without much cervical effacement? Am I just a total wimp for not being able to stand labor? Or is this probably a function of the fact that this was an induction, and a very early one at that? I'm going to ask my doc, but I'm curious about BTDT moms' experiences with contraction spacing and dilation.

Really intense and close together contractions are the result of pitocin. This could also happen if your waters were to be ruptured by your practitioner.
During the natural process of labor, when the woman is not induced, contractions come on steady and gradually. This gradual process may take longer or be a bit faster; every woman is different.
I wonder why they gave you pitocin so early... Yes, it helps with effacement...but still, they must have known you would be out of your mind with pain for hours. They should have started with cervidil and then introduced pitocin.
There are a lot of different ways to think about it, especially depending on who is in charge I your care, a dr or widwife.
That was not my personal experience, but of a patient whom I was assigned to during my L&D clinical rotation. It's too early for any of my own labor stories-I'm only 28w5d and hope my little girl stays a while longer in there.
Definitely ask your dr or midwife, though. Hope this helps!
