Babywearing: anyone started yet? Anyone have advice?

my LO is a month old today and Id really like to start wearing her in the ergo or k'tan I have. Problem is, every time I've tried (other than one lucky, sleepy hour she had in the k'tan when I made a much needed Target trip), she absolutely hates it.

So, anyone have advice? Recommendations of when to practice with her? Ways to make her like it more?
Any tips for those specific carriers?
Thanks!

Re: Babywearing: anyone started yet? Anyone have advice?

  • I've been wearing LO for a couple of weeks :). She is 4 wks today and I put her in my Beco Gemini or moby. I like the beco better bc it's quicker for me to buckle up and start moving.

I usually put her in after a change and a feeding so she's relaxed. Sometimes she will resist a little but usually once I start dancing or moving around she will snuggle in.

Also, we both get super hot if her face is on my chest skin to skin, so I usually wear a shirt that covers my skin more or I put a flannel burp cloth under her cheek.

    I love wearing her!

  • Following this... No advice. So far, we've tried the k'tan multiple times and he hates it. We also have the Ergo with infant insert but haven't tried it yet. I'm getting antsy about making something work because we have our first flight in a few weeks.

  • I borrowed my cousins ergo carrier and have a moby wrap also. I have really started to wear ds this week since he has a cold and won't let me put him down. I've worn him at home for a few minutes at a time whole doing chores. He hasn't minded either carrier at all and seems to fall asleep when I put him in them.

  • We tried the Ergo with infant insert again this week. He is more stable in it now. He was unsure if it until I began to walk around.

Wearing him felt warm so I am going to keep him in cotton PJs versus fleece.

  • DD is four weeks old and we both love the Mei Tei.
  • LO is four weeks also and I just started wearing him in the k'tan. I think it really just takes practice and finding a hold your baby likes. DS hated at first so it definitely took a few tries to get the hang of it.

  • I have a Moby and an Ergo wrap... Babe is 3 weeks today and today was our first successful Walmart run with Dad in the Moby. He doesn't always tolerate it... But I've been trying to practice just in short spurts at home. I make sure he is fed and changed beforehand. I will sometimes wait for him to get sleepy (while wearing the wrap), then ease him from being held, then into the wrap. Then I'll do a little walking around, etc. Today may have been a fluke... But it sure was nice to have my hands free for shopping. I'm still terrified for my first solo trip. Our car seat is too big to fit in a shopping cart (all safety concerns aside), so I really want to be able to wear him.
  • Thanks everybody! I'm wondering if she's still too small an uncomfortable. She just hit 8 lbs. I really am hoping something starts working, I don't want to bring a car seat grocery shopping or on other shopping trips.

  • Yes. I used a ring sling for the first couple weeks, and then switched to my Ergo with a receiving blanket rolled under his bottom and his legs positioned froggy style. I don't have the infant insert, but this trick works very well! And he's 12 pounds at barely a month old, so that probably helps with fit. ;-)

Sometimes he fusses intially when I put him in the Ergo, but if I gently bounce and talk to him for a few minutes he settles in and will usually go to sleep.

  • I wore dd for the first time today . She's going through a growth spurt and wants to be nursing constantly or is crying. I'm lucky she likes the carrier. Falls asleep with a soother a few minutes after I start walking .

I don't really know what advice to give ... Just make sure baby is fed, try a soother and bounce ? Or walk ? He may just have to get used it. Good luck !

  • We have a Moby and a ring sling. The ring sling is great because I can nurse in it really easily and the Moby is better for when she'll be in there for a while. It's been so cold here that I've just kept her bundled in the pumpkin seat when we run errands and I use the carriers in the house when I want my hands free and don't want to put her down.

  • I started using ring sling at 1 week, and my tula at 2 weeks. Lo has no problem being worn, and I often wear him at night because he wakes up after nursing at night. I just pop him in the tula and within a lap or two of my house he's passed out.
  • I used my moby for the first time around the house today! DS loved it and I liked it a lot! He is a little over a month and 9 pounds. Good luck!
  • I bought a boba wrap because DH thought my giant boobs would make positioning LO in the moby wrap awkward-- turned out when I tried it today that it's the exact same wrap for newborns. Argh. Anyway, got LO in with some help from my mom-- she was fussy but calmed down as I started bouncing. We danced around the living room for the length of Hungarian Dances and Clair de Lune then she became hysterical.

She lasted a bit longer last week in the Ergo with infant insert (or as I call it, baby taco) but fell asleep and woke up screaming so I haven't tried it since then as it's a bit unwieldy to get on and off quicky.

Anyone with F+ boobs find a wrap carrier style that works for them?

  • LO loves our moby. We have an ergo 360 with an insert and just looking at it, the insert seems to totally fill the carrier without even adding baby to it! So we haven't even tried it with him. He does great in the moby though so that's fine for now.

Yes! I have a G cup...And those girls pose a problem. I'd like to learn how to breastfeed in a carrier but not sure that's even feasible with my chest unfortunately.

I'm a 34J and have had some luck with the Moby. It is a little tricky to get DD settled in properly because my boob gets in the way but once she's in there she's pretty content. We also have the ergo with infant insert but it is too damn hard to figure out how to maneuver that thing.

  • I use a Ktan- and if my measuring tape is to be believed I am an I cup. DS loves it. As far as keeping it high on my body goes, I adjust it so that the back x is really low before I put him in. That means once he goes in his head is always right under my chin. It seems to stay really snugly in place. Might be a sizing issue as PP have suggested.

  • Also- putting her in/on in front of a mirror helps me tremendously, especially with my moby wrap.

I have a small waist in comparison to my hips, so starting with the moby at my belly button like many videos suggest did not work for me- it would end up riding up and becoming super loose. I start at the smallest part of my waist and get a much better fit.

  • I've been using my Boba wrap since she was about a week and a half old. Love it. I used Moby, Ergo and Mei Tai with my other kids. Moby, eh. I prefer using the Ergo after at the 3 month mark and a wrap before that. Same with Mei Tai. Thinking of getting a Sakura Bloom.

  • I have the same as @byrne15‌ and love it!
  • Just wore my LO out in public for the first time (2.5 weeks). We used the Moby, and it went swimmingly! I just made sure he was completely fed and changed immediately before leaving the house and he was fast asleep the whole time. I was worried about the car seat to wrap transition, but it all worked out (I had the wrap all tied before we left). I'm psyched!

I felt this way too- I tried a k'tan and it was a disaster. The moby was practically useless the first few times I tried it too. I went to a local natural parenting store and tried on everything they had with the help of the shop owner. Ring slings to baby backpacks. I bought the Beco Gemini bc it snaps narrower for a newbie and loooove it. Three buckles and we are good to go!

If you want to keep at it, maybe see if there is a store you can try different things? And either bring your baby, or my store had weighted dolls to simulate an actual baby. M

  • yes We have been wearubg since our first day home from hospital. I have a stretchy wrap (like a moby), linen ring sling and a few woven wraps. my husband has a ergo xtra. Amazingly we disvovered ourbabyis already big enough to not need the infant insert any more at 5 weeks old. He started out with it though.
I think his favorite is the steatchy and I like it as I can wear it as kind of a top all day to pop him in and out of. I tgink it helped we started wearing early on. As others have said though they often grizzle when thay first go in. I sometimes need to bounce around a bit and pat him on the bottom to get him to settle down. then he will sleep for hours in it.
There are many baby wearing clubs around which have 'Sling meets'. it could be how you are wearing your baby or maybe there is another kind of carrier you would both preferand these meetups are a chance to try ddifferent things and get advise. If u don't have a group near u tgen there are lotsof facebook babywearing groups and u can get expert advise there and post pics of u carrying to get technique pointers. Unfortunately though not every baby likes to be worn though.

I have G cups and I can wear any type of wrap or carrier. When it comes to arms free feeding in one I can only do this with a ringsling though but that might just be practice. Any streatchy style wrap should fit u and depending on your body size in wovens your base size might be a 6 or 7. im a size 12 and a size 6 in woven wraps. Ringsling sizes are more about your height.

When you wear a moby type wrap do you curl LO around your boob with head resting on décolletage or somehow fit LO between boobs? I'm unsure about placement and would appreciate any guidance.

DH wore LO in the infant insert for the Ergo 360 today on a walk which she was cool with while we were outside in 60 degree weather but she overheated and was upset within minutes of returning in the house-- the infant insert is basically a sleeping bag.

  • @2JEL‌ , huge boobs here, too. When I use the Moby, I place him center with his head right in the high middle of my chest. "Close enough to kiss." He's kind of between the girls, but not completely. It's really about comfort and making sure he's in a positive here he is secure and can breathe freely. Just kind of play around with it. Also, watch YouTube videos for visuals!
