Re: DH wants me to give up CDing bc stink is out of control

  • The Grovia Stay-Dry inserts are cotton/hemp blend (all natural fibers) for all the absorbent layers.  Natural fibers tend to need more water to get clean and are less likely to have detergent build up problems than synthetics (using more detergent / main stream detergents isn't likely to cause problems with natural fibers).  So if they stink (and stink the worst) it sounds like they are not getting clean in your normal routine.  In addition to the usual suggestions (more water, more/different detergent, more agitation/longer cycle, water softener if hard water), I'd suggest flipping the Grovia inserts inside out to expose the absorbent layers to more water flow & agitation.

  • So my whites cycle is a hot cycle but it's even shorter than the normal cycle, which I think is weird. I hate my washer LOL. So heavy duty cycle on hot it is.

Grovia inserts have pul tho don't they?

I'm been using those insert for three years with out a problem of leaking after been boiled. And I don't boil them often, only when they get barn yarn smell, but doesn't happen anymore. But to be honest I love my muslin gauze flats.

  • Yes mine are TPU backed and also have plastic snaps, so boiling would make me really nervous.

  • It could be the washer that smells like bleach.  Take a dipe to the other room, and sniff again.

  • Ok so the 5th rinse finally got rid of it! I just started my heavy duty hot wash with extra rinse and the tide powder up to the 3rd line...which was a bit shocking to me bc that was easily 4 times the amount of Tiny Bubbles I was using!

I'm starting to think it's the size of my diaper load and that's it's too tiny. My washer seems like a pretty large capacity to me...it's not even a third of the way full with all my diapers in there. I'm thinking that's one of the reasons why the diapers were never getting clean enough and why it took so many darn cycles to get the bleach smell completely out.

Make sure you check for suds in your final rinse and keep rinsing until you don't see any suds/cloudy water. You may not need that much detergent. If you have a lot of suds in your final rinse, you can probably reduce the amount next time until you figure out the right amount.

Hope you've finally fixed your problem!

Wait, what made you decide on tide to the 3?

  • You should be fine with a smaller load in a FL. The way the machine is designed, they get proper friction by falling when the tub spins.

Tide has a lot more ingredients than Timy Bubbles and maybe even some fillers, so it's not surprising that you would use a larger amount ... But line 3? Seems like a lot.
  • Was I not supposed to do line 3? Ahhhhh! I thought the majority of people said a "full scoop" of tide! Ugh oh! There were a few bubbles, but not what I would consider "suds" in the final spin. Crap, so how much tide powder am I supposed to use? LOL

(I think) I said a full scoop of Tiny Bubbles. I made no recommendations on Tide, but I think most people go between line 1 and 2.

ETA I just looked at my post and just said detergent. But I assumed you were still using Tiny Bubbles. Sorry I was unclear.
  • I knew I should have calls out that secret fluffed for her jacked advice. Start with tide to the 1. Especially if it's a smaller load.

  • Oh gotcha! Yeah looking back some others said a full scoop of detergent but didn't specify which kind so I guess that's where I got confused. Well I think I'm going to let it go this time since there wasn't a whole lot of suds in that final spin and cut it back for next time.

  • Ugh. Well glad I'm not entirely to blame for the line 3 misunderstanding. I don't use Tide so I leave Tide advice to Tide-users. I do use Tiny Bubbles, though, so that's what I feel qualified to make recommendations on. A reminder to myself to be more clear in these situations.
  • I forgot about that post.......and I don't have a HE machine so I'm not sure how much, if anything, is correct.

  • @freezorburn‌ it's no biggie. I don't think it did much harm. I'll just do some more extra rinses next time if I see suds but I think they're good. Thanks for all your help.

This on the other hand is pretty solid. That's a good trick for telling build up apart from just not getting clean and makes sense.

  • No more stink after pees today! However, they do smell a little perfumey and I think I could see a faint rash forming on her bum. So now what? A few hot water rinses before I wash with detergent again? And obviously less detergent the next go-around as well.

  • Yay for no stink!

I would just wash like normal with less detergent. I wouldn't rinse more, unless you want to. Just make sure there are no suds in your final rinse next time.

  • I agree with Doeie. I don't think extra prerinses of the dirty diapers will be as effective for removing the extra detergent as much as rinsing extra after they're clean. But keep an eye on the rash. Some babies (mine) can't so scented detergents. :(

  • If you think they have enough leftover detergent it's irritating your kids bottom j would do some hot washes on the clean ones to get that out then use less next time.
