Mopey Monday

Re: Mopey Monday

  • I'm here and nothing has blown up yet, so I'm calling this morning a win.

I realized today though that we really need a better plan for getting out of the house on time and without incident. I try to plan ahead as much as possible -- lunches are made the night before, clothes are picked out. But I have a hard time getting DS to get ready quickly in the morning, and not to get distracted. And then while he's either whining about the choice of breakfast or playing instead of getting ready, DD is removing her shoes and chucking her breakfast plate across the kitchen.

  • I'm so not ready for a 5 day week.  On the positive side though, I got so much stuff done around the house this weekend, I'm really feeling organized and prepared.  That feels good!

The one thing I was super behind on is Brody's birthday party, which is now happening in less than 4 weeks.  We didn't get the date we wanted because I didn't plan enough ahead of time, and didn't realize how quickly bowling alleys fill up.  I'm also behind on the invites, so now I may have to send one that I don't love because it will be done faster.  The invite is fine, but I'm super picky about these things.  #firstworldproblems

@Holly_1007 - How did Keagan's party go?  We decided on a bowling party as well, any tips?

  • Oh this is definitely a mopey Monday!  i so don't want to be at work!  After over two weeks off it was so hard to come back.  Must find a new career that will pay me to stay at home!

and my random thought of the day.  the guy sitting at the security desk here looks like he is 12 and wearing daddy's suit.  I don't think he is going to "take down any intruders"! haha

We started at 4.  But that's because Brody had a close group of friends from school and now most of our friends have kids.  Plus I felt like the kids were getting bored just being at our house.  So last year we did a small family get together at home (cupcakes) and a kid party at a play place.  This year, I think I'm skipping the family get together (apartment-life problems, I'm sick of hosting) and just doing a bowling party.  I'm inviting the grandparents to join at the bowling alley if they want.

  • Yes, it is "rough" coming back to work after being off for two weeks and being able to sleep in nearly every day.  I feel groggy.  I also think I'm going to be pretty hungry today, but that's a good thing as I indulged too much over break.  It will be good for me to not be able to snack on whatever I want all day.

I really enjoyed my time at home with Lily and I think she did too, but she was not sad about leaving me today.  I know she was excited to see her daycare friends.

  • I'm not ready to come back to work for a 5 day week. Teacher's here lucked out. School is closed due to wind chills. We're currently at -30*. Nothing makes you more ampt to stay in bed than a cold, wintery day.

I ended up with the flu bug this weekend. So Saturday I felt like death and did nothing. So thankful for DH who took care of B. Sunday I was on my own but I was feeling much better.

A quick way to lose a few lbs though. My pants fit better at least.

I hate mornings.  Mondays are the worst too.  We pack as much ahead of time as possible, but still run into the same problems.

I will tell you the one thing that made our mornings easier is that I stopped making Brody get dressed on his own.  Now, I just don't care.  He's perfectly capable of getting dressed, but if I let him do it, it would take 20 minutes.  Plus, he's lazy, so he would prefer I do it.  So, now it takes 2 minutes and avoids a fight in the morning.

We also let them pick whatever they want for breakfast (within reason) and keep on hand many options.  Brody is in love with Special K cereal right now, so as long as he has that for breakfast, he eats nicely and doesn't wander away from the table.

Now...if I could get Aedan to stop running away from me while I am trying to get him dressed in the morning and stop leaving the breakfast table to play, that would be great.

ETA: Also?  Aedan's favorite thing to do is to UN pack the items I have packed up for him for school.  It drives me insane.
I was wondering this morning if I gave too many options -- cold cereal, oatmeal, waffles, yogurt and fruit. DS listened as I rattled off all the choices then said he wanted French toast, which was not an option, lol. I'm thinking of making him choose the night before or else just saying, "today you get oatmeal."

The three longer vacations will require us to find care for 5, 11, and 7 consecutive work days.  I'm back to scheduling appointments to see more daycare centers.  I'm sorry, I just think this is absolutely fucking insane.

I got an egg mcmuffin and sausage mcmuffin on my way to work today.... one for bfast and one for lunch.  I ate them both :\"> and now I'm burping like a motherfreaker and might die of indigestion.

I can't wait until next winter when I buy a new snow-appropriate vehicle.  I didn't like deciding today which "kid" I wanted in the safe car on these roads.  :(  We chose the 4wd truck for me and the wombie since I have so far to drive.

  • @tinyhumantoe Yes, that seems excessive, especially the two weeks at the end of May/beginning of June. Maybe that's when schools get out in your area? And to require payment for that many days off if is unrealistic.  I don't know anyone who gets 6 weeks of paid vacation.

@tinyhumantoe wait she expects you to pay her for her time off? Ummm...no.

I can see having off the 3rd (not paid) because the 4th is on a Saturday. Many people will probaby have the 3rd off anyway. At least I know I do but getting paid for it is insane.

ETA: had wrong day for the 4th.

  • @melody921  Add us to the mornings suck club.  DH and I discussed getting up earlier to avoid the stress, but I don't think there is a time that we could get up that would resolve the issue.  No matter how much time you give Maya, she is always the last one ready.  We have to budget at least 10 minutes just to argue  about why she has to wear pants and not a dress.  Then Ethan is tearing the house down, running away with my makeup, pulling the knobs off of my dresser (happened this morning) and generally wreaking havoc.  Of course, eating is always an issue too.  Luckily we don't argue too much at breakfast (that's what dinnertime is for) but it still takes them 30 minutes to get a bowl of cereal down.

@tinyhumantoe  No.  Just no.  She's nuts.

I agree - I mean I have good amount of vacation time as i have been with my company for a long time but its not nearly that much time!!

And the nearly four weeks of time during what I would consider "summer" is just ridiculous.  She is running a business. If she wants to take the summer off and not run her business at that time then that should have been stated at head of time and there should not be any "holiday time" taken during the rest of the year.

I hope you can find something else

  • DH has the day off, and is still on night shift so he was up all night and will sleep all day.  I woke up to a made-from-scratch coca cola cake that he spent all night baking, complete with a trip or two to the grocery store to get supplies.  FFMC we ate cake for breakfast before DH got to bed, so it was like christmas all over again for the kids.

This is the last week he's on nights before being on days for a quarter, and I'm so excited.  3 months of having DH sleeping for 8 hours during the day every.single.weekend. was no fun, since it felt like I didn't have a single day off staying at home with the girls all day.
Yeah for days! I couldn't imagine DH being on mids all the time. We'd have no life. Especially since I work we'd be like 2 ships passing in the night. DH's schedule is 12 hours though too. 1 weekend a month with him on mids is enough for me!

She has 3 teachers, and 4 non-teachers.  I have a feeling that in a couple months she will have 3 teachers, and 0 non-teachers.

@pokedot I don't mind about July 3, or Christmas Eve, or Black Friday.... but those are not "Holidays" - they are vacation days.
Right! Which is what I meant about not being paid for them. She's working her way out of a job. Teachers kids only is the way it seems she wants it. Maybe she's doing this to get only teacher's kids? I know our DC is mostly teacher's children with the exception of B and about 3 others but she would never ask for a day off paid. That's crazy!

I was just thinking about the opposite. I was thinking next year might be the last year we do an "invite the class" party because the K class will be a lot bigger. I guess I will just wait and see how the transition goes and if he is making fast friends with the class.

I do have way to many party ideas to stop at next year though!

  • I get 20 days off - vacation and sick combined.  We have to carefully budget that time to accommodate illness, appointments, but most of all - her fucking time off.  The only reason we took a vacation when we did this year is because we couldn't find anyone to watch W during her second consecutive week of vacation.  Because of that, we didn't get to go on my family's houseboat trip which was the vacation we love to do every year :(

I wouldn't mind paying 2 weeks (10 days) vacation.  Anything over that is fucking insane, because childcare is something where people have to pay another provider if the kid isn't going to you!  And yes, she takes sick days and court days in addition.

She really needs to watch only teachers kids.  When we started with her, our contract said 10 paid vacation days.  She ended up taking more than that, and it's gotten exponentially worse every year.

How do you think it would go if you talked to her about it? Tell her that you are going to have to look into other options due to the amount of paid time off that you will have to double cover since you do have to work. See what she says. Either she will work with you on the paid time off, and you will still need to find extra care but at least it frees up money do pay someone from care.com or she won't and you can continue on your search for a center that is open daily except a few normal holidays.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect some paid holidays and vacation.  We pay our in-home provider for the Thanksgiving holiday (2-3 days), Christmas/winter break (1.5-2 weeks), and spring break (1 week).  We also pay her for Memorial Day and Labor Day.  Because I'm off in the summer, I don't pay her, but I think she also takes a week off (not sure if people pay her for that?).  What THT's provider is requiring is excessive to me, plus it sounds like she's often sick as well.  I don't think you should have to pay for the 1 week in January or the 2 week vacation in May/June.
I agree. We pay for 52 weeks a year and the center is closed for maybe 2 of those weeks (day here and there throughout the year) but most align with my work holidays too so the only thing I have to scramble for is when my kids are sick. Normal holidays paid is totally acceptable, and even a week vacation wouldn't phase me if I liked the provider. But she is crazy.

Best part of Christmas?  We're going to Mexico.  Cabo to be exact.  I can't even wait.  We're going at the end of April.  The place we're staying is just bananas.  Also, I'm totally going to swim with dolphins.
Awesome! Was this a surprise from DH?

Neutrals are good. I lean more toward grays right now. Even a crisp very light blue is a nice neutral. I remember doing this years ago. It's exhausting and overwhelming but once it's on the wall and one so worth it. That just means you're getting closer to it being completed! Yeah!

We have the opposite going on around here.  There are a lot of things that the people in the office worked on, but couldn't complete 100% because they're waiting on things from the many many people that we out for 2 full weeks.

All of a sudden we're back and everyone is, "do you have this?"  "is it done?"  Well, no.  You weren't the only one gone for the last 2 weeks.
