I want to write an email to our daycare corp office about their rate hikes. I'm not upset about our rates going up a little, this is the first time since they opened over 2 years ago that they have gone up. I am upset about the letter they sent explaining the hikes. It says that due to the ACA, they are now required to offer health insurance to all employees. I want to tell them that I think it is ridiculous that the most expensive daycare in the area was not already offering health care to the teachers and it is sad that it took an act of Congress for our awesome staff to get the benefits they deserve and I was a bit thrown by the blaming of the government for my rates going up. DH said I have to send the email to him first to proof because he is scared, lol.
Our daycare posted her PAID days off. There are 32 NON-HOLIDAY days off. Any sick days or court days (she had 5 this year) will be in addition to those! WTF!
The three longer vacations will require us to find care for 5, 11, and 7 consecutive work days. I'm back to scheduling appointments to see more daycare centers. I'm sorry, I just think this is absolutely fucking insane.
Vacation: Jan 21-27 May 29-June 12 July 24-Aug3 Sept 18 Dec 24-Jan 3
Holidays: May 25 July 3 (LOL, didn't know July 3 was a holiday) Sept 7 Nov 26-27 Dec 24-25 Dec 31 (LOL that NYE is a holiday)
I can't imagine any non-teacher families being able to work this out.
That's absolutely ridiculous. I hope you find some centers you love. There's no way DH and I could make that schedule work. I only get 17 days of PTO.
This birthday party talk and a few invites we've received lately is making me wonder when I'm going to need to actually have a separate kid party for my kids. So far we've just been having parties at home with family and a few close friends who have kids.
I was just thinking about the opposite. I was thinking next year might be the last year we do an "invite the class" party because the K class will be a lot bigger. I guess I will just wait and see how the transition goes and if he is making fast friends with the class.
I do have way to many party ideas to stop at next year though!
@hmp1, I feel like it will be easier when DS has a few friends to invite but we don't have to invite the entire class. So after K maybe when he's no longer in a daycare setting?
DH picked up books and books of paint colors from the store yesterday. I have to decide what color to paint at least 10 rooms in our new house in the next 4 weeks or so. I am completely overwhelmed.
Anyone want to do it for me?
I would do the entire house the same color (a light grey) and pick a few rooms for a pop or slightly different shade- formal dining, master bedroom, playroom. And let Brody pick his room color (within reason).

I agree. I think it will be much easier once they can clearly identify a few real friends so it doesn't have to be the whole class. I'm just so excited to be able to have a real party at home rather than trying to plan something in NY where I am not familiar with things. I just hope that people show up.
I get 20 days off - vacation and sick combined. We have to carefully
budget that time to accommodate illness, appointments, but most of all -
her fucking time off. The only reason we took a vacation when we did
this year is because we couldn't find anyone to watch W during her
second consecutive week of vacation. Because of that, we didn't get to
go on my family's houseboat trip which was the vacation we love to do every year
I wouldn't mind paying 2 weeks (10 days) vacation. Anything over that is fucking insane, because childcare is something where people have to pay another provider if the kid isn't going to you! And yes, she takes sick days and court days in addition.
She really needs to watch only teachers kids. When we started with her, our contract said 10 paid vacation days. She ended up taking more than that, and it's gotten exponentially worse every year.
Wait, @tinyhumantoe, if there's a contract, can't you call her out on this?

That's what I'm leaning towards right now. The open great room/kitchen/eat-in kitchen will probably all be a light gray. (Of course there are a million grays to choose from, but I'm trying not to over-complicate it)
But it's all the other rooms that start adding up. The dining room might just end up being grey, but then I have 3 bathrooms I wanted to do something with, playroom, boys bedrooms and our bedroom. So, I guess that's only 7 other rooms/colors if I do the entire main living area the same color. I'll probably paint the laundry room later, but that's another one I'll have to decide on later.

That is when I feel like I will be doing home parties. I don't want to do parties that include the parents and siblings at our house in the winter. But once he has his group of friends and is at drop off age, I will probably do small house parties for him that will be more like Nerf Wars and Tech Deck parties.
I'm lol'ing at the people that are in the office for the first time in a couple weeks sending "ZOMG, we need to have a conference call on this asap!" on something that went down 2 weeks ago. Keep reading your emails, everything has been handled.
SAME HERE. I guess I'm the only one that reads all emails before firing off replies?
Yeah, people need to read from the top down. It would save everyone a lot of aggravation.

Can I say when picking a color like gray, so many tones come into play with them. Gray is probably the hardest. It can be gray but take on a blue shade or a green shade. It's so confusing. All of my years in the paint department taught me to take a crisp white swatch and compare the colors you love to that. It will then show you what color the swatch actually is. Like more green, blue etc.
yikes @tinyhumantoe that's a ridiculous number of days off. If the majority (or half) of your clients get about 20 paid days off a year, IMO you shouldn't ask for more than that, esp if your sick days/husband's sick days/ court dates don't fall into that category.
I don't know how I did it with DH sleeping each weekend either- it really just felt like I didn't get any weekends. I'm not sure I handled it super well- hopefully I can feel more sane and be more patient and calm with the kids with a little more help!
I'm back at work. So lame. I cried super hard when I left Lennon this morning. Sawyer was still asleep so I know she'll be upset that I'm gone. And Lennon and Sawyer are sick so I got less than 3 hours of sleep last night. I envisioned going back to work on my first day and everyone would be like, "Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang, I can't believe she had another baby, she looks SO good." Instead it's like, "SWEET MOTHER OF CHRIST WHAT IS THAT HIDEOUS THING?!?!?! Oh God, it's Jennie, I'm never having kids if that's what it does to you."
Anyway, I'm happy to be back on a computer so I can see all of the cute siggys.

That's very helpful! Thanks! All our trim will be white, so I think it's a good idea to compare it to white anyway. I like the bluer-grey look, so I may do a blue in the dining room. But then I was thinking about a shade of blue for the boys rooms. So I don't want to over-do the same colors in the house.

I like white bathrooms. Clean and fresh but a light grey that matches the rest of the house would work for the same feeling. I do not like houses that have a different color in every room, I prefer just a couple of key rooms and the rest to be the same.

Ha, no. DH got me a super awesome towel warmer for Christmas. I've put my underwear in it for 2 weeks straight and it's been amazing every single time.
My Mom's boss gave her the trip for 25 years of service. We're staying in a gorgeous home that's part of the resort. 3 bedrooms, private pool, 4,000 sq ft, maid & butler service, the whole 9 yards. He's paid for the stay & the airfare.

Also, I still haven't taken the hanging racks off the walls. The desk & tupperwares are at least rehomed...

1 naptime taping, 1 naptime + 2 extra hours painting & removing tape & putting the big shelf back up. Seriously, around 6 hours total. I used a snow day to paint everything white, remove the doors, patch all the holes, and do the shelves, so if you count that, it sucked. But painting/taping was easy & quick!
@tinyhumantoe Yes, that seems excessive, especially the two weeks at the end of May/beginning of June. Maybe that's when schools get out in your area? And to require payment for that many days off if is unrealistic. I don't know anyone who gets 6 weeks of paid vacation.
How many non-teacher's kids does she have?
_______
I get 6 weeks of paid vacation, but that is written into my contract. My DCP has 10 days + federal holidays + 3 last minute sick days written into hers. Period. If she calls out other days she does not get paid. This year she only took 3 vacation days because she was so sick all winter.

DD doesn't fit into any of her normal length shirts anymore. They're all way too short. I've been getting around it by having her in tunics and dresses, but does anyone know of a brand that tends to run a little longer in tops?
L is just in tunics & dresses most of the time. I put her in 3Ts long ago because of torso length and just dealt with the bagginess. I don't know what I am going to do for the spring though...sorry I am no help.

Not sure if the girl clothes are the same, but I really like the way Crewcuts fit. They are cut slimmer so he is in a 3T for length but they are not baggy on the shoulders or chest. The Factory store often has 20-40% sales.
Ugh, I'm so pissed. We booked the bowling alley for Brody's party this weekend, so I ordered the invites this morning and printed them at Walgreens right away.
Then, I get a phone call that says the idiot kid who booked our party double booked it with a tournament that has been on the calendar for months. Now I have to re-order invites and am probably out the $. She did offer to reimburse the invites, but it is really annoying.

I can't speak on the kids clothes but, as an adult with a long torso, undershirts are key. If it's just a small one, I'd try to buy some boys tank undershirts and tuck them in under her shirts to cover the gap.
Are we going to do the Valentine thing again this year?
I'd be down for doing something but I don't see how I could get Ethan to cooperate for a pic. Do you think they'd be excited to get a hand-made valentine in the mail?
@flamingemu We only had a contract for year 1 we took W there. From there, she pretty much posts the days off on her door and that's what they are. If we don't like it, I guess we can go somewhere else. The only thing she has people sign is an agreement for her hours and monetary penalties if the kids aren't picked up by then.
@tinyhumantoe, have you looked into in-home daycare like on care.com or something? I just think it might be less psychotic than the schedule you're dealing with now.

Super weird, but there were hardly any options on care.com. I did find a couple on craigslist that I contacted. None of them had openings for a 2.5yo and newborn. We are going to keep looking. I figure we have to have something lined up for starting in May, before her first vacation.
How much notice is nice to give a daycare provider once we decide to switch? A month? Two?
Now that I'm back on a computer I realized that my siggy was huge. LOOK AT ME! So I made it smaller, sorry for the massive face attack I've forced on you all for the past few months.

This is what we have now. It's moving into Nancy's room next month when we get our king size bed.
I love the upholstered headboard look, but DH thinks our cats will scratch it? Because they spend so much time climbing around the headboard? IDK. I think he just doesn't like it.
This is really similar to our new bedding:
I think I have the fabric headboard in my head because I like how this looks so much.
Anyone seen any out there that are under $200 or so and look good?
@jenndub You're adorable and you know it But I totally understand thinking things will be back to normal and it just takes longer. Whaaa whaa. That said, just think back to how huge you felt before you had L. That's where I'm at right now, and a quarter of the weight gain is in my face!
Speaking of which: Lady at work: Have you been in those cookies down there? Me: Yah I had one Lady: Ohhh you better be careful! Me: Why, did someone who picks their nose bake them? ::total straight face:: Lady: Uh, no, that's not what I was saying. ::conversation tapers off::
