How much do your babes eat? I offer DS a meal 2-3 times a day, but he really only eats a tablespoon or two for each meal. I usually offer at least 3 of the 4 food groups, in at least 2 different foods. Depends, some days he gets more, other days he's uninterested - thats the average. I feel like he should be eating more ... no?
The ILs (whom I adore) are fascinated with watching DD eat, especially her self-feeding. Charming. What's not charming? The running commentary/sideline coaching that's like over-involved parents at a kids soccer game.
Somehow I don't think the part about solid food (eta: at this age) being for exposure, exploration, and socialization at family mealtimes has really gotten through.
My FIL visited for the holidays and basically force fed my son. We put food on a spoon and offer it to him. He eats whats on his, then chews on the spoon or chats. We give him time between spoonfuls, teaches him that eating takes time and to lengthen out the time he sits there.
OH no not FIL, he puts the spoon in the mouth for him (which we don't do!) and then takes it quickly to keep offering him more. Sigh. Eventually I had to run to the table quicker than him to sit beside him to allow him time. He still ate the same he normally does. Just got done 10x quicker.

I don't measure but I make my own food so I can tell you cubes. Zoey eats a couple ounces of rice cereal with prunes mixed in at breakfast. Then 2 cubes of 2 veggies for lunch and 3 cubes for dinner. About 1 ounce per cube? Probably less. I try to use a different type of food per cube so 3 different foods for dinner. We haven't introduced solid food just purees. Zoey loves food and could eat way more but she's significantly cut back on her bottles so I'm trying to keep her solids intake down so she'll eat more formula. She's only taking in about 20-24oz. Is that normal??

I'm no help. My son is EBF so I have zero idea of his BM intake. I am beginning to wonder if I'm offering it too much and need to wait his cues. I tend to fall back on how long has passed versus him telling me when he's hungry.
1 oz equals 2 tablespoons. So she gets way more than DS. Hmmm.

Lol this is how we feed DS. He would be screaming if we waited too long in between bites. He wants it and wants it know!
@ usernewname - same here, sometimes he only wants a couple of bites, other times a whole container. I try not to worry, hoping he will let me know when he needs more. He still takes about 24-28 oz of formula also. He's growing like crazy so I hope that means he is getting enough. I have also started giving him the puffs and yogurt melts lately. He's not a big fan of the meat that I've tried so far.

Ugh. At least my ILs left it to us to feed DD. They just incessantly told DD to be a good girl, open your mouth, eat your food, no don't play with your food, you're supposed to eat....
DS gags. He's thrown up once. I find with him is that he can handle little chunks. If I give him a big piece to chew he gets to much then he gags. He got too much banana today and gagged.
His pincer is coming along so I can offer little pieces that way. He can be an eager eater sometimes.
Is it normal for a baby to gag like on a food 4 or 5 times and go red in the face? It looks like ds is gagging hard. If it's even a thing ... soft vs hard gag? Lol
DS likes to chew on food but doesn't get that he's supposed to swallow. I tried the mum mums and pizza crust because he kept trying to grab mine. He loved chewing on them but when it came time to swallow, he just let it fall out of his mouth. Is this typical and he'll just figure it out with practice?

When dd gags on food, she usually gets it right back up. Maybe a little red in the face, but not like constipated poop red face.

@usernewname Okay. I got confused after reading a lot of these at once. Are you doing purées or baby led weaning? My dr told me at his 6 mth appt that he should now be up to 16 ounces a day of purées. He is still working towards it. He agreed that it's A LOT!!! He is at about 13 ounces now, but he's also over 20 lbs so that may make a difference in amounts. My son does gag once in a while, but he moves the puff or whatever it is right back up with his tongue. Never a red face. I've cared for many children before my own and some kids really are slow to start with baby food. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but with that said, I would probably want to talk to the dr about it if your child isn't progressing with good at all.

He goes pretty red. And it can be a hard gag. Like it looks painful.
When do you just give up on BLW? The gagging is not getting better after almost 2 months. And I feel like he still isn't "eating". Or do I just press on? His little pincer is getting better. Should I cut up stuff? I think at this age my 4 year old was eating diced up foods. I don't know. I'm torn.
DD1 didn't really "eat" anything until she was 8months old. She was very content sucking on her food though. DD2 got very very frustrated with BLW, so we switched to a combination of finger foods and purees.

We're moved back to purees/mash. I cut up stuff for him small too as his pincer is coming along.
Maybe this has been talked about. I remember yogurt being discussed but I was wondering about eggs. Sorry if this is a repeat! The doctor said it used to be yolks first but now it doesn't really matter but a lot of websites talk about yolks first. Has anyone else done eggs yet and did you just use both parts of the egg? Again sorry if this was discussed!
Ok, I tried to puree a combo of carrots and peas. It turned out OK bit definitely had way more texture than store bought Peas (which is practically like yogurt). I tried it myself and made sure I could swallow without chewing... but when I gave it to dd she started gagging really bad. I finally stuck my finger down her throat because I thought she was choking. My mom says it's from the different texture. To be honest, it would be nearly impossible for her to choke on it. So is it possible that it was just from the texture change? Is my cooking that bad? I gave her puffs too to try to see if she would enjoy the flavor more and the same thing happened. She figured it out the second time around but I still freaked out.
Eta: I notice this is a common question. I apologize for a repeat! But some insight would still be great

If your DD has only had purees, it could be a texture thing or that she doesn't care for the taste of it.
Not to scare you, but you shouldn't finger swipe or stick a finger in her throat. If there was something there, you could accidentally push it further back. Babies are actually very good at pushing/coughing/gagging chunks back up. If you think she is choking, pick her up and give her a few blow backs.

I'd probably gag too if you fed me a mushed pea/carrot combo :-S
I tasted it. It didn't taste bad. Have you never had peas and carrots? I'm kind of side eyeing that comment because there are plenty of carrot/pea combos....
Eta: in fact, the peas and carrots came in a frozen combo pack of, guess!? Peas and carrots! And have you never heard the saying "goes together like peas and carrots". Also, I have bought store bought pea/carrot purees that didn't make her gag. >:D<

no didn't scare me. Educated me more like it. Thank you! The more you know
I have given DS a mum mum twice now to try. He's typically a puree kid. Both times he did a little gagging and then just puked (like a good amount of vomit) and was happy as a clam. He also looks at me like I've just given him a stick of dynamite he has to hold on to each time he has a mum mum in his hand. This kid is funny.
DS seems to love chewing on pizza crust. I'm not sure he actually eats any but it's the one food he tries to grab. Tonight he tried to swallow a huge piece and choked. After a few whacks on his back, he puked it up and was then unhappy I wouldn't give him more!

What are mum mums? I have heard about them on here before but can't find them any where

They look like oval shaped smushed rice cakes. They dissolve easily and are big enough for LO to hold onto easily. I found one flavor at Kroger and I think Buy Buy Baby has them.

I found ours in the organic baby food section. It wasn't with the gerber baby food.
Today she took both spoons away from me and started feeding herself. She got mad when I took one to put more food. Apparently she wants to feed herself.
And apparently my little guy has some intense gag reflex or something. On top of gagging and puking up mum mums, DH took the kids to daycare this morning and said DS had his hand/finger in his mouth and then ended up puking.

Where was this, Target? Or BRU? I don't have a Buy Buy baby near me
@ns1 thanks! H has some serious reflex issues too that have just started getting better. Maybe he just needs a little longer. @JKBMA2014 that was at our grocery store (Hyvee) they were in the organic section. Edit to say I think I might of also seen them in the baby food isle at Target
