Baby Names

lets try this..

I'm a little scared to post here because I know this board is known for being super honest. But I'm interested to hear thoughts on the names dh and I have tentatively picked.

We already have an Owen Paul who is 10.

Girl- Emma Christine or Madalyn Christine

Boy-Grayson Paul

Boy will be mn Paul no matter what. Dh and my dads names are both Paul and dhs dad passed away when he was 14. I want girls mn Christine after a family friend.

We wanted names that were a little different but not way out there. (I know Emma has become super popular. I just love it anyway)

  • I like Emma Christine. Emma is popular but still classic. Madeline is lovely, but I prefer this spelling.

Grayson is too trendy popular, meaning it will very soon sound dated. Paul is a nice MN and I like the family ties.

  • Thanks for all the feedback!

Madalyn was spelled that way because I want the Lynn sound at the end not the line sound.

We also liked Ashton Paul for a boy. Dh loved Grayson but I don't like that it can't really be shortened...

  • I would for sure spell Madeline this way! Madeline Christine is cute as well as Emma but I feel you should know all the names you choose are very trendy and popular at the moment.

Same with Grayson it is trendy and I don't think it ages well. I also don't like Ashton but I do like Asa or Asher.

The "lynn" pronunciation is one of three legit pronunciations of Madeline, and for me it is the default pronunciation in my area, so I don't think you'd have too many corrections there.

If you have a boy it will be MN Paul even though your older boy has MN Paul?
Butting in - I think because it is such an important family name, this is not too much at all.  My SIL's share the same middle name which is also MIL's middle name.  I think it is nice to have the common thread.
  • I love Emma Christine and do not care that it is popular. Madeline Christine is nice and also popular.

Grayson is okay but not as lovely as your girl choices. Have you considered Graham?
  • Being a Jennifer from 1986, I don't really mind that there's a lot of us, lol. The trendy doesn't necessarily bother me.

What I meant by "different" was not your average Jennifer, Jessica, Samantha names. I know they're trendy, but honestly, boy names are stupid hard to come up with. I love Nathan but dh doesn't. We'll get there I'm sure.

And about the middle names. Our 10 year old is my step son. He was given Paul as a middle name after DH's father that passed away. Owen's middle name has nothing to do with my father. I am very very close with my dad, and since paul is such a great MN, we thought why not honor both of our fathers if this baby is a boy. TBH, I kind of like Paul as a first name, lol.

My paternal grandfathers name was George. He and I were very close, and he passed away when I was 15. I had always said if I had a boy, his middle name would be George after my grandpa. My brother had a baby boy last year, and they named him george. So I don't want to use George as a MN anymore because it will be associated with my nephew, not my grandpa. My dads name as the MN just makes sense to us, even though SS already has the same MN. Technically, it's different, lol

  • Maybe use your dad's mn as the mn, or maybe your maiden name?
lol my maiden name is Lithuanian and not even close to being a word, lol. And my dad's middle name is michael. I don't mind at all that if this baby is a boy they will share a middle name. I'm trying to make sure my step son sees this baby as his true sibling, (We have my step son 100% of the time, his mother has no involvement in his life at the moment,) and I think sharing a middle name is fine. My 2 nephews both have the middle name J and their nicknames are TJ and RJ. I have no problems using Paul for both boys. Especially since it's different Pauls, I think it's kind of cool. We can be all, "no no Owen is Paul after his dad's dad, and this baby is Paul after mine,"

  • Paul is an awesome first name. Why not Paul George?

I dunno, my sister in law is kind of competitive, and though George would be after my grandfather that she never met, I would get tired of hearing her compare the name to her baby.

Madelyn is also pronounced how you would like and I prefer the "e" spelling to the "a" because the "a" looks made up.

  • Madeleine is always pronounced the way you want and is beautiful and classy.

I like that spelling too! I guess madalyn looks weird. But Madelyn looks cute, I love the names with y in them. I'm not a huge fan of the Madeleine spelling. I prefer with the y. Easier transition to Maddy which is what dh loves about the name.

I think we're set with either Emma or Madelyn. (Though this could change as I do like other names and am only in my 4th month.)

But thank you all again for the feedback!!

I think that it is more than "fine." It is what your gut is telling you and I agree that it will be very special for your step son and your dad. And I agree that Paul is a great name.
  • Well I like Emma better then Madalyn. Madalyn makes me think of The Family Guy episode where Bill Clinton was talking about Madalyn Albright and called her Straddlin' Madalyn. Ever since then the name has repulsed me.
  • Love Emma Christine, especially since it's spelled correctly!

Madeline is not a favorite of mine especially when spelled incorrectly.

Grayson is just not a nice name imo, trendy or not.

I do not mind 2 of the same middle name. I would love Paul as a first name.

I hasn't really thought of Paul as a first name.

The reason we would reuse Paul is that my stepson was names 10 years ago, a full 6 years before I ever met them. His middle name, though it is Paul, has NOTHING to do with my dad, who I am very close with.

I'll bring up Paul as a fn to dh.

And the Madeline spelling is growing on me :)

  • Emma Christine and Paul mn
  • I think all of your choices are nice, solid options. I do prefer Graham, as pp suggested.

I would suggest that if you use Paul for this baby that you not make a huge deal out of it being for your dad and your stepson not being named for your dad. Maybe instead play up the cool connection that stepson will have the same middle name as his new baby brother. Just something to consider- it seems like it might be an important time to assure your stepson of his place in your life and his dad's life (but I don't know your family so you'd know best).
  • I'm so over Emma, Madeleine, and Grayson.

What about Emilia Christine or Matilda Christine?

I wouldn't reuse Paul as a mn. Maybe as a fn. I think George would be a better mn.

Absolutely. That's the cool thing is that if its a boy we can play up the tie in to my step sons middle name. He's very involved with this baby and very excited, so naming it Paul for the middle name would be a tribute to dhs dad, my dad, AND a tie in to my stepson

  • Dh didn't like Paul as a first name. He doesn't like traditional first names. He doesn't mind trendy. But we are Jennifer and eric. We want something besides your typical names. That's why even though Emma and Grayson might be trendy now... They're not as common overall as Paul.

Christine will be the girls middle name after a close family friend and I just think Christine is a beautiful middle name. I suggested it to dh as a first name, but we like the way Emma Christine sounds. Or Madeline Christine. Love them both lol.

Boys names are hard.. Maybe because we secretly would love a girl. My mother in law has SEVEN grandsons. Seven. (3 of them are steps, but this poor woman just can't catch a break and get a granddaughter!) I'd love to be able to give her a granddaughter. Maybe If we find out this baby is a boy, we might be able to more seriously discuss boy names.

  • Before we knew the sex, we considered Jasper Paul. Had a few people say it reminded them of Twilight but I am not a Twilight fan. Also could call him JP
  • Grayson is MUCH more common these days than Paul.

Yeah I know but Paul has been around forever. I think there are more Pauls of every age than Graysons total. Idk I told dh I didn't like that we couldn't shorten Grayson so I think I'm talking myself out of it anyway lol.

  • Emma and Madeline are lovely, Greyson is NMS.mSo many people in the past few years have picked it trying to be original. Way too many Greysons. It reminds me of how Madison was for girls a few years back. Just annoying and overdone. I don't quite understand reusing Paul either, but weirder things have been done. I think Benjamin sounds nice with Paul.
  • I think you already got good advice but I'll add my two cents anyway. Emma Christine is lovely but Emma is SUPER popular. As long as you don't care about that, you're good. Madeline is also very popular but spelled this way, very pretty.

Grayson is trendy and I feel like I'm tripping over Graysons around here. I don't care for it and I feel like every third birth announcement lately is Grayson. I love Paul and think you can do better.

  • I think Emma and Madeline/Madeleine (these spellings) are fine names, and Grayson is all right, although very trendy-sounding and NMS.

BUT to repeat the point that a lot of PPs have tried to make: this is 2015, not 1985, and your child is growing up in a different generation where different names, no matter how "common" they sound to you, are not going to sound common to him/her, and vice versa.  My daughter doesn't think Jennifer and Jessica are common because she doesn't know anyone her age with those names.  She thinks the Maddy names are common because there are a billion of them at her school.  And by the time she grows up, there won't be as many Pauls and Jessicas around as there are now because a lot of them will have passed on. IMO naming a child Emma now (the #2 name in 2013!) is analogous to naming a child Jennifer, Ashley, or Jessica (the #1, 2, 3 names in 1985) in our generation.  It just seems bizarre to me to care what was popular 30-40 years ago but utterly indifferent to what's popular in the year your child will be born in.  Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's wrong to use a popular name and most of them are popular because they're good names, but if you're truly looking for something different, the names you like will not sound different to anyone born in 2015.  Go to the SSA baby name website, take a good hard look at what's popular now and how a lot of names that used to be popular have declined in popularity, and do what you will with that information - but just please be honest with yourself if using a less common name is important to you.

This is true. Madison was super popular. I used to work in an elementary school so I'd have a pretty good grasp of popular names. I didn't realize Grayson had become SO overused.

And we're using Paul because it don't be REused. My stepson is 10 and I only met him 4 years ago. I can't just claim he was named for my dad too. So to honor my dad, and tie in with his brother, it was just a no brainer to me. I'm not going to not use Paul just because my husband got to use it ten years ago with a kid I didn't even give birth to.

I've loved Emma since I saw it on friends a d since dh suggested it before I got a chance to, the popularity factor doesn't outweigh the love factor for us on that one. Especially with Christine as a mn. I just love the combo.

Thank you for your detailed reply! I think our preference is "different" names as in not your traditional john Chris Jennifer. Not necessarily unique. Unfortunately, there's not very many boy names that are different AND unique. I don't want a way off the wall name that people question if its a real name, but I don't want the standard Joe or Chris names either. I think that's why Grayson was fine with us, because even if its popular, its different.

But like I said before, I think I'm talking myself out of Grayson anyway.

  • Love the lovin on Emma Christine as an Emily Christine myself
  • I love Emma Christine. It's classic and timeless, despite it's current surge in popularity. As for Madeleine, I love the spelling and think it's gorgeous, but I am one of the minority who would assume the "line" ending. One correction would be all that was needed to clear it up though.

Not to get myself in trouble, but I actually do like Grayson. I think it's too bad that it has become so popular/trendy, because that has really turned me off of the name.

And FWIW, I think your reason for re-using Paul is great. It sounds like a great way to honor your family members, as well as include your step-son in the process. So, that gets a big "Thumbs Up" from me.

  • Love the lovin on Emma Christine as an Emily Christine myself
What's so funny is the Christine is because my mom babysat a girl named Christine, who later grew up to babysit me. We are still close to this day, she's only 10 years older than me. She has a daughter named Emily!

So basically you and I are best friends now, lol. I do like the name Grayson, dh heard it when he saw that kid Grayson Chance play the piano and sing lady Gaga Paparazzi. That's when he decided he liked the name. He picked Emma and I picked Christine for the middle name. Paul was always going to be our boys middle name, so I feel like I should get a little pull for the boys first name. I still have time, and we find out next week if we need to decide on a boy or girl name, so we'll see I guess!
