Someone who knows I'm half black and white said "you thought of any names yet?" Me-"yes we have a few picked" (not keen on telling everyone just yet) Person- "omg! Don't give your daughter a black name! That would be horrible."
Um excuse me? There are a million things wrong with what that whole statement. I couldn't even reply my jaw dropped to the floor.
What the fuck is a "black" name, anyways?
Batman? Dark Night? Lord of the darkness? Ozzy?
I have no idea wtf a "black" name is... but I'm going to stick with Batman, simply because if I worked for Crayola, all black crayons would be renamed Batman
Someone suggested I name my son Gotham so that every time he cries in the middle of the night I can just say to DH "Gotham needs you". There's a meme of that floating around somewhere.
OK. I'm sorry but we all know what a "black" name is..... My step mom actually enrolled a girl into school who's name was La-a..... Pronounced Ladasha. We all know that a "white" person would never name a child like that. Instead, they take normal names and fuck up the spelling so bad that no one knows how they are pronounced.
How about we name our children whatever the fuck we want to? Seriously, who cares if you want to give your child a black, white, Hispanic or muslim name?
My daughter has one of the most popular names of the year because I didn't do my research and then blabbed a few of my names to my mother in law who liked Isabella the most..... She was suppose to be Isabella James now she is Isabella Anne, the only reason for this is because my MIL passed away the day after we spoke about names, and Isabella was the name she liked and Anne was her middle name.
I know you are all going to be disappointed but her name will not be spelled Iza

I am in no way defending this post/poster but I think she meant white people do that [f up the spelling]. I think it was an attempt to not come off as racist, but it was very much a fail.
@MrsPope1770 Thank you for clarifying that for me. I guess my reading comprehension wasn't as good as I thought it was. Ha ha
Or she just wrote what she wrote and came off in a superbly idiotic way.
It was very clear to me what she meant. Like I said, miserable fail at communicating, but she wasn't bashing one race of people. She made multiple racist and stereotypical comments in an attempt to, I assume, be comical or snarky--not racist. It was an idiotic comment, just thought the clarification that she wasn't making that comment about black people was necessary. Once again, not defending the poster.
"You're SO fat." -My little brother. "You look so pregnant from behind, I can definitely tell." -A good friend just being rude. As in, my love handles and ass have grown...because according to everyone else I look exactly the same save my basketball up front.
Maui!!!! I was planning on using this as soon as I got to the end of this thread. If you weren't my lover, I would be hurt that you got to side eye Chloe before me...
Sorry my post was taken out of context. It was meant more to be sarcastic than anything. Not racist at all. I will agree a fail on my part. It's a little silly to act like certain races don't alter names in certain ways, just like it would be silly to say certain names aren't race or culture specific.
The post wasnt meant to be or sound racist at all. Just to say who cares if the name you pick sounds race specific. It is your child name either what you want to.
Very sorry if I offended anyone. It certainly wasn't intentional.

You don't agree that certain names are used mainly by certain races? I don't see how it is racist to say that. The point is still who cares if a name sounds like it is derived from a specific race. If you like it, use it.
I could understand if I said I don't like black sounding names like la-a. That is the opposite of what I'm saying though.... I'm saying that if you as a parent like it, it shouldn't matter what race it originated from.
If anything it was a poor Internet attempt at sarcasm, not racism.
My stepfather told my husband he should ask for a blood test for paternity.
Apparently I must be a trollop because DH and I have elected to cut communication with him since he cant stop making inappropriate comments/advances towards me.
Well let's see. I know a Maara, a Jessica, a Tory (male) a Thomas and a Kyle. Maybe where I'm from black people have different naming standards than the rest of the world? My bad. I should probably watch more TV so I understand these things better.

And I know a Natasha, and Alicia..... As well as a Dequita and Shealiqua . I never said all black people use names that originated in black communities. Any race can and should name their child what they want.
I'm saying that it is silly to think that certain names were not originated in certain communities. And what is more silly, in my opinion, is for people to ignore this fact, instead of embracing the culture.
Like I said I'm sorry if I worked it poorly in the first comment, and extremely sorry if I offended anyone. That's pretty much all I can say. Take it of leave it.
My H's friend saw me standing up and SCREAMS "WOW YOU REALLY GOT FAT!" My response was "I'm pregnant, what's your excuse?"
We come from a big Italian family and I don't remember who said it bot I got "you don't look pregnant from behind, and that's because you aren't eating enough."
Before Christmas, I was shopping at Kohl's. I got a pain in my side, so I rubbed it a natural reaction. This old lady who was standing next to me said "You are spoiling that baby already and it should be taken away from you the moment it is born." I turned around and said "Excuse me?" Thinking maybe there was some mistake, and she stated I was coddling the baby and will be a horrible mother, and that's what's wrong with America today.
Then there was the 2¢ everyone put in because we don't have a name picked out yet. And finally "I think you have a name picked out but you aren't telling anyone because you don't want to know yet."
Seriously we haven't picked out a name.
OMG to the woman in kohls!!! That is so messed up & I get the same reaction when I tell people we haven't named our son yet!
Let me explain where you are getting the flack from: you are using too broad of a brush to describe people, which comes off as obscenely racist.
For example, you say "Black people use X names". That is an extremely silly statement because 'black' skin is found worldwide, and in thousands of various cultures. People in England are going to use different names than people in Africa, who use different names from people in America. Rinse and repeat to almost infinity. Hell, even people in small towns several miles apart have distinct naming traditions.
Pick any skin color, and the same is true. It's why trying to use skin color to clump people together is so ridiculously stupid, and the basis for cultural misunderstandings and racism.
My stepfather told my husband he should ask for a blood test for paternity.
Apparently I must be a trollop because DH and I have elected to cut communication with him since he cant stop making inappropriate comments/advances towards me.
She should embrace it because it is her name. If the origins of the name are tied to a certain culture I wouldn't say she "stole" it from that culture. When and if you looked up baby name, there are pages that give you the origin of the name, and a definition right? So I'm not seeing why it is so hard to believe that certain names originate from African American, or African cultures.
When looking for names the only thing I considered was the definition. Not the origin, but if I seen a name that I liked and it had Hungarian roots, that would have been a bonus, because it would be part of my culture.
The big picture is I was trying to say people should name their kids whatever the hell they want, and people just need to get over your choices because they are your choices.

I still don't get it. I know a completely white girl who's name is DiAndrea. Has she stolen from black culture or embraced it because her mom gave her a non traditional likely made up name? You aren't making a ton of sense here.
----quote fail----
I'm certainly not arguing that people should be able to name their kids what they want (although I WILL argue it on a case-by-case basis, because some names are stupid). Or that some cultures follow certain naming structures. But you can't just break things down by race like that. Take your example of Muslim names. A Muslim from where? Pakistani Muslims will use different names than African Muslims who will use different names than Iranian Muslims. Same goes for Black people. A black person from where? Different countries and ethnicities in Africa have different naming styles. And to just lump everyone into the Lawfanduh category seems ridiculous. Latina/o names? From where? Mexico? Spain? Puerto Rico?
I stand by my original comment. WTF is a "black" name? Clearly the person making the comment in the OP I was referencing was making it out of ignorance and possibly a bit of racism (don't know them, can't say). But blanket statements that don't take into account the true diversity of humanity irritate the shit out of me. To make the assumption that "everyone knows what a black name is. It's Shaniqua" or whatever, poorly worded attempt at Internet sarcasm or not, seems fairly juvenile to me.
We all have things that bug us. Blanket statements about any group of people bother me. But it's clear you didn't mean to offend, and I stand by the fact that my Gotham comment is still funny as hell. Shall we get back to the douchebags who are saying stupid-shit to pregnant ladies?

This. As 1/2 of an interracial couple, with a biracial DD and another biracial child on the way- I've heard my absolute fill of racist nonsense when it comes to baby naming.
So just stop and check yourself.

I will never, in all my years, understand why people insist on using skin color to group others. There are SO many cultural differences within such a massive grouping, that it makes said grouping useless and pointless.
For example, I am white, but I don't think Helga is an awesome sauce name, because I don't live in Norway, where it is a legit pretty name.
At Christmas, my FIL's girlfriend's daughter kept telling me how her coworker was so tiny and about to pop and showed me a pic of how tiny she was to prove why it was so crazy...A) I'm not tiny, never have been, not sure why it matters, C) Everyone is super uncomfortable when they are 39 weeks pregnant, not just "super tiny people".

I love the word mansplain. Just had to put that out there.
I was laughing and telling my parents about how my husband had to jump up and down to get his jeans on and my husband replies with, "at least I can wear jeans"
@etherhay my sister gave us a Halloween costume that is 18months as well as a Christmas gift, and went on and on about how she only paid 97¢ for it. I don't think he is going to fit into the costume this year, and may be too big for it next year. I have no problem getting a good deal on things, but don't it is polite to rave publicly as someone is opening the present you gave them about how much you spent. Your MIL must be a trip.
Last night at a New Years Eve party, my H aunt who is a borderline alcoholic mentioned several times of how sorry she was for me, and how much it must suck to be me and not have any fun. I felt like saying, um your sorry I am 10 weeks away from having the baby I always wanted?! Your sorry I am choosing not to drink heavily while pregnant?! Ugh!
When I was applying for my current job, I ended up disclosing my pregnancy to the owner of the school. They had decided to offer me a different (better) position than I had applied for, but since it was a position as a therapist I felt the need to let them know that I'd be taking 12 weeks off because I thought it was important to take that into account with working with special needs kids.
The very French owner just smiled and said, regarding getting pregnant, in her super thick accent, "Well, these things happen unfortunately!" SHE RUNS A SCHOOL. I about died.
