Has anyone else given up caffeine completely???

I know they say you can have between 150-250 mg of caffeine per day, but I figured I'll give it up completely just to be safe. I am craving coffee though!!! It's been so hard, especially since I've been so fatigued and don't have any pick me up! Anyone else in my boat???

Re: Has anyone else given up caffeine completely???

  • I cut back to one cup in the morning when I started TTC. Even all these months later I still miss my second and third cups. Occasionally I'll have a half caf in the afternoons. Once out of the first trimester I'll work my way back to my usually coffee intake. It's the only form of caffine I typically have.

I'm not a fan of chocolate, tea, or soda.

I gave up coffee for other reasons back in May, once it's out of your system you'll stop craving it as much. You're going to be fatigued with or without the coffee.

  • Honestly, I have cheated twice now with a cup of decaf. I'm trying so hard, but I'm addicted to caffeine/coffee. :(
  • I'm not really a heavy coffee drinker to begin with- i used to have just a cup a day. But nowadays, I just take a sip from my husband's morning coffee.
  • Yep. The only caffeine i get is in the occasional piece of chocolate

  • I'm on vacation so I haven't felt like I NEEDED my cup of coffee in the morning.  I'm cutting it all out too, but if I get desperate I won't feel bad having one.

  • I gave up coffee two months ago when I knew that we were ready to try. I'm glad I did that because I was able to get the headaches out of the way before being pregnant. I do miss it a lot and get tempted when my husband drinks it all day long, but I have never given in.
  • @aRBe I cut back to decaf at first and then no coffee/sodas. It's been a few weeks now. How long do you think it will take to get out of my system?
  • I have given up coffee as well. I figured cold turkey would be easier than monitoring how much I drink per day. I drink steamed milk and hot water with lemon. Nice not having that crash in the afternoon
  • I'm a huge coffee drinker but gave I up about a week after my bfp because I got a major aversion to it. Aside from the occasional chocolate I don't have caffeine.
  • Yes, I've given it up and I feel your pain (or fatigue). I drank coffee and soda every day, and since getting pregnant have completely given it up. It's been hard because I'm so tired - all I want to do is chug a pot of coffee to get a jolt. :)
  • I feel like I need a support group and all of your responses are helping. Thanks! :)
  • Completely gave up regular coffee and caffeine (soda). Don't really miss it that much either!
  • I gave up a lot of caffeine while TTC our first little one.  I realized I was drinking a ton of coffee.  I still have little caffeine but I honestly don't think about it now.  I drink decaf coffee daily, eat chocolate occasionally (especially now during the holidays), and have a soda maybe once every two weeks.

  • Yes, I was drinking 2-4 cups a day before my bfp. I child's turkey the morning I found out. I'm going to sleep so much quicker now. I haven't wanted it honestly. I haven't even wanted chocolate.

  • I didn't give it up on purpose. I planned to have at least one cup of coffee a day throughout. I love coffee. I even bought special Swiss process decaf. I'm 8 weeks now and sick as hell most days. The idea of caffiene but especially coffee makes me want to yack. It seems like nature nixed my addiction for me.

  • I used to have a cup most mornings, but not all. Since the BFP, I've stopped drinking it in the mornings at home, but have had three or four small lattes over the last few weeks if I really want one. Isn't it weird that 1shot of espresso has so much less caffeine?

  • Not on purpose, I survived on Mountain Dew the last time around.

This time I just have such a sweets aversion that I'll have a sip here or there, but I'm not guzzling it like last time.

  • I have given up coffee completely but still loving chocolate (a bit too much maybe)
  • I have given up caffeine completely, trying to be as healthy as possible...craving salty stuff unfortunately though and I have high blood pressure so I am trying not to eat too much salt
  • Last pregnancy I cut it out for the entire 1st trimester. This time around, NO. I need coffee, especially since my 19 mo still gets up in the middle of the night. But I have limited myself to just 1 cup instead of my normal 3.
  • I cut it out when trying for our first and never really started again (we also started trying for a second 6 weeks after the first lo). I still eat chocolate and will occasionally have a half cafe. But I don't miss the caffeine. I will have a cup of decaf tea in the morning. I think just the routine of making a cup of something helped.

  • I'm still drinking about 1 1/2 cups each morning. I'd like to get it down to just one, but don't plan on cutting it out.
  • I gave up caffeinated coffee in the spring, cold turkey, and don't regret it.  I do still have a cup of decaf in the morning, and very occasionally will get a fancy starbucks beverage decaf as well.

  • I haven't been drinking coffee, but it wasn't really hard to give up the half cup I drank. Only real reason I stopped was to replace it with a glass of calcium fortified orange juice because I hate drinking milk. I gave up soda a few years ago ams only have one occasionally before being pregnant. If I find myself craving one I'll have it. But I'll never give up on chocolate!
  • I quit completely when I was pregnant with DS. And while I was BFing (15mo). I then went off the deep end and was drinking about 3 cups a day for the last few weeks... I'm currently drinking one cup of half caf a day. I can't just quit cold turkey this time… I have a 16-month-old to run after.

quietdownfiish said: More power to you all, seriously! I have no idea how you all give up caffeine (or want to!). I was told 2 normal cups made at home is still totally fine to have, so I'm going with it. I'd be sad without my coffee. Not only for the taste, but the comfort of that warm beverage in the morning. As it is, I'm having a slight coffee aversion right now and it's bumming me. Me too!!! My aversion is killing me. Last time it lasted my entire pregnancy.

    @quietdownfiish - noooooo don't tell me that. I'll be
really bummed! I was hoping it would be a first trimester thing for me. The smell is bothering me so much. And I love the smell of coffee- but it's making me gag.

  • I am not a coffee drinker so it does not impact me. Def getting some caffeine in chocolate.
  • I've given up coffee, caffeinated sodas and my engery drinks. I trick myself occasionally by drinking a sprite just to give me the carbonation. Any caffeine I do get is from the smores hot chocolate at dunkin donuts.
  • Still eat chocolate but no coffee. I switched to green tea while ttc and then to decaf tea after my bfp. After first tri, I'll probably start drinking decaf coffee.

  • I began cutting back on coffee about a year ago when I decided to start TTC.  I used to have 2-4 cups per day, and now I generally have about 1/2 cup and never more than 1 cup.

I also have an aversion to hot coffee now, but I am keeping some iced coffee in the fridge, and that is not a problem.
  • Lol no. I drank a cup of coffee and a diet coke a day with my first, and she is perfectly fine. There's no way I would survive without it. In fact, I need it before I even get out of bed in the morning.
  • It wasn't optional for me, doing IVF. The RE made it very clear, no caffeine! So I gave up soda, coffee and energy drinks in July. Then in September I gave up all chocolate. Since being pregnant I've had a little bit of chocolate here and there but that's it.
  • I gave up caffiene back in June. I often still enjoy a decaf once a day, but it's so unappealing at the moment. I miss my warm cup in the morning! I usually love the smell of coffee, but I can't stand it now. Hoping it's only a first trimester aversion.
