I am just about 18 weeks and was thinking about having a glass of wine tomorrow. I have read so many condescending articles about drinking wine while pregnant. Some say that a glass of wine or 2 is fine, others say to avoid it all together. I'm a big wino so this has been one of the most difficult things for me to give up. I used to have a glass or 2 of wine while watching The Bachelor or my evening shows. That part hasn't bothered me, but having dinner with my girlfriends or while socializing with family on Thanksgiving and during the holidays has been tough. What are your thoughts or for those that have already had a baby before? Did it make a difference if you abstained from drinking or not?
Re: Wine and pregnant
I have read the previous threads and it seems people feel more comfortable after first tri. I haven't seen much for articles on this that talk about the timing of it in depth just makes me curious.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck. Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

Apparently I've read that before because a comment has my like.Dr. Susan D. Rich, MD, MPH

One of these opinions is not like the other. Unbiased I believe is the word.
So, after hearing that, and after having a great a/s a couple weeks ago, I absolutely will be having a small small glass at christmas. I'm a wino like yourself and have been dying the past few months.
I am not worried in the least bit
BFP 4/8/14, MMC 5/5/14, D&C 5/9/14
BFP 8/26/14 Due date 5/8/15
I may change my tune come 3rd trimester, but I figure I only have 5 months longer to wait, and as much as I miss, it I can hold off until then. And as long as you're not binge drinking vodka, I'm not going to argue with the moms that are choosing to have a glass now and then.
the vast majority of opinions i have seen think that a small amount is fine. i would be ok with having a little bit here or there, but i am doing so many other questionable things this pregnancy (cold medicine, diet soda, coffee, tuna) that i feel i need to just abstain completely.

Our families will buy non alcoholic wine for myself ! It doesn't give the wine taste but it has the texture ! It's only a few months anyways
Good luck with whatever decision you make '!
That said, it's better to be safe than sorry! I'm having a glass of wine on special occasions, averaging 1 every 2 weeks or so, just since the start of my second trimester, and only infront of non-judgmental people (like my friends who are already moms and get it, they all drank a bit in their pregnancies and have healthy kids)!
Hope the view from your high horse is lovely! 8-|
