concerns found on ultrasound

I'm 19 weeks, had two ultrasounds the last two weeks, they found echogenic bowel, a little excess fluid around one of baby's kidneys, and my subchorionic hematoma is "pretty big," according to my high risk doctor. Anyone else have some seemingly scary issues going on?

Re: concerns found on ultrasound

  • Hello,

I'm sorry you're going through this. :( I know anything unusual on an ultrasound is upsetting.

My baby has something called plexus cysts found on his brain. The doctor said these almsot always go away, but it's hard not to be nervous. I sure hope you get some reassuring news soon

  • Are you going for a higher level u/s? Doing genetic screening? Echogenc Bowel can be scary but it can also be nothing or very mild things. Fx for your baby !

It almost seems that finding markers is as common as an all clear AS....most really do turn out to be nothing...fx that is the case for you.
  • Prayers are with you OP. I still do not have any information about our little one yet. Anxiously waiting till the 29th. our baby was diagnosed with a "shiney bowel" at 16 weeks. The dr. told us it was "probably nothing, since it is not a concern until after 19 weeks." Still very anxious though
  • Sending good vibes your way. They found an echogenic intracardiac foci (which is a soft marker for Downs) at my anatomy scan and I've done a bit of researching. My sequential screen was negative but I still completely freaked out. Although it's scary you have to try and enjoy the pregnancy and hope for the best. Remember that with so much new technology, they find more and more "questionable" findings. I go for a repeat ultrasound the 23rd, which I'm not happy about right before the holidays, but I'm glad to get some more info on my little girl. I hope it gives you comfort to know many women that I've seen have gotten back something similar. It's definitely hard when it's your baby and I went through days of worry until I realized that deep down I feel like my little girl is healthy and fine in there. I decided that I'm going to believe that until someone straight out tells me differently.

My DS had two choroid plexus cysts on his brain and an exogenic focus on his heart at the anatomy scan. We had a level 2 ultrasound and the quad screen done and they determined he was very healthy.

He will be two next month and is about as perfect as they come. ;)

Fingers crossed you get good news!

  • :( I'm sure that's really hard to go through. FX for you!
  • I had 2 soft markers found on my ultrasound- a choroid plexus cyst on the brain and echogenic focus on the heart. My dr said she isn't worried since my panorama test and all my blood tests have been good, but of course I'm still worried. Have you done any genetic testing like the panorama or maternit21? It might give you some peace of mind. Fingers crossed for us both!

  • I know you must be very scared. I'm sorry you're going through this!
My SIL had a SCH that lasted all pregnancy. Her doctor was sure she'd go into preterm labor at some point but she made it to the due date. I've also heard a lot of positive stories of markers showing up on the A/S and then being gone at later ultrasounds. I hope the very best for you, hang in there!! T&P for you and baby
  • I'm sorry you're going through this, FX you get some good news soon!
  • Positive thoughts for you and hope that the issues resolve over time.

I was told echogenic bowels at 18 weeks. It was very bright and I ended up doing EVERY SINGLE TEST. Fast forward 2 weeks and we did the level 2 ultrasound. We still have the echogenic bowels but they are not as bright and they are no longer concerned. We have a follow up ultrasound in February. The doctor told me that, 90% of the time it is the machine and not the baby. But he has seen most babies born perfectly healthy with it than not. I would not fret to much ( lord knows I did). But just keep your head up and think positive.

    ETA:

We have only gotten 2 tests back. Which were CMV and Toxo. I came back as having a previous infection but not a current one. We have completely ruled out infection for him that could have caused his echogenic bowels.
  • Good luck! My baby has a hole between the ventricles of his heart (totally different problem, I know) and I was told it may very well close before birth. They will continue to monitor until then. It's so hard to wait but most of these things turn out just fine. Still, if there is genetic testing or other testing that can be done, that can at least help give you an answer and help you to consider your options and plan if anything should turn out to be abnormal. Fingers crossed!!!
  • Sending hugs, t&p's and all good vibes your way OP
