Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How many ounces for 8 mth old?

We feed DS solid foods 2 times a day (we have tried for 3 but that doesn't always happen).  He is still on the pureed stuff and haven't gotten the feeling he is interested in finger foods yet (also has no teeth) but after reading all these food posts I feel like we are behind.  He is getting about 24-30 oz of formula a day and I'm wondering if this is too much and we should try to move towards more solids.  We have tried water in the sippy cup also but he hasn't quite grasped that concept and is only interested in playing with the bottle, not feeding himself with it.

How much formula does your 8 month old get per day?

Re: How many ounces for 8 mth old?

  • DS is 7.5 oz but he gets 25ish ounces a day. Sometimes as little as 22 though. Our pedi said as long as he's getting at least 18 he's fine. We do 3 solid meals a day, and he eats some finger food like puffs, mum mums, and a few other things. I don't think you're really behind! Every baby is different, and if he isn't really into a third meal yet, then he just isn't ready. Formula/BM is the most important thing at this stage anyway, so I would keep up what you're doing. DS is also a chunker, 21 lbs at 6 months, and he would eat anything we put in front of him lol.

  • DS gets around 28-32 ounces a day still. We just added a 3rd meal yesterday. But so far, solids haven't affected his milk intake. But our pediatrician said that should be the case until we add the 3rd meal and started more finger foods. We started Cheerios a few weeks ago.
  • DS is eating 3 meals a day, and has been since 7 months.  However, we have purposely been upping his solids intake without dropping his formula intake to help promote weight gain.

During his last growth spurt, DS got up to 32 oz a day, but he generally averages 28 oz daily.

  • DS is a big boy. he drinks 33 ounces per day of formula and 3 solid meals. I would try having yours learn the pincher grasp and grabbing at food and putting it in the mouth. Puffs are a good way to start. Chopped bananas too. Even though there aren't teeth, those gums can do some amazing things!
